East: Week commencing Monday October 6, 2003 Choose your region BEING DIFFERENT- LIFE WITH ASPERGER'S Nita Jackson has Asperger's Syndrome, a socially debilitating condition similar to autism. Nita tells her own story; of how she feels and how she is trying to help people understand her. Can you tell when something's wrong just by the tone of a person's voice? Do you know how they feel about you by the way they're sitting? Most of us can interpret the little signals people put out, and use them to decide how to react. But that's not the case for Nita Jackson. As a person with Asperger's she has an inate inability to read people's body language. She has trouble keeping eye contact with others and making friends. Reading Body Language "The trouble is that on the surface there doesn't seem to be anything different about me," she says. "I look normal, but I'm not like other people. I find it hard to read body language, facial expressions or tone of voice." As well as difficulties in decoding other people's speech, Asperger's sufferers also tend to speak in an unusual way themselves. Though their grammar is correct, their style of speech may be repetitive and jarring.

Some regard this as "high functioning" Autism, while others believe it to be a separate disorder under Pervasive Developmental Disorders. In general, these individuals may have some features of autism. What sets them apart is that all Aspergers's children are verbal, and may have average cognitive (intelligence) skills. They have the tendency to sound more adult-like in their communication, and may even be hyperlexic (early readers). However their comprehension of spoken or written materials differs significantly from oral or written output. There is also a tendency towards a preoccupation with certain subjects, and unusual memorizing skills. A misunderstanding of social behaviors and nuances is always present. Language is taken quite literally and double meanings and jokes can be quite difficult for individuals with this syndrome. Language intervention particularly geared toward comprehension of verbal and written materials, as well as social skills groups, are quite helpful. Active Media Architects

    108. Asperger's Disorder - AACAP Facts For Families # 69
ASPERGER S DISORDER. No. 69, (8/99). Asperger s disorders. While autism and Asperger s have certain similarities, there are also important differences.
    http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/69.htm
A SPERGER'S D ISORDER No. 69 Asperger's Disorder is the term for a specific type of pervasive developmental disorder which is characterized by problems in development of social skills and behavior. In the past, many children with Asperger's Disorder were diagnosed as having autism, another of the pervasive developmental disorders, or other disorders. While autism and Asperger's have certain similarities, there are also important differences. For this reason, children suspected of having these conditions require careful evaluation. In general, a child with Asperger's Disorder functions at a higher level than the typical child with autism. For example, many children with Asperger's Disorder have normal intelligence. While most children with autism fail to develop language or have language delays, children with Asperger's Disorder are usually using words by the age of two, although their speech patterns may be somewhat odd. Most children with Asperger's Disorder have difficulty interacting with their peers. They tend to be loners and may display eccentric behaviors. A child with Asperger's, for example, may spend hours each day preoccupied with counting cars passing on the street or watching only the weather channel on television. Coordination difficulties are also common with this disorder. These children often have special educational needs. Although the cause of Asperger's Disorder is not yet known, current research suggests that a tendency toward the condition may run in families. Children with Asperger's Disorder are also at risk for other psychiatric problems including depression, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
