Introduction:
Asperger Syndrome (also called Asperger Disorder) is a relatively new category of developmental disorder, the term having only come into more general use over the past fifteen years. Although a group of children with this clinical picture was originally and very accurately described in the 1940's by a Viennese pediatrician, Hans Asperger, Asperger Syndrome (AS) was "officially" recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for the first time in the fourth edition published in l994. Because there have been few comprehensive review articles in the medical literature to date and because AS is probably considerably more common than previously realized, this discussion will endeavor to describe the syndrome in some detail and to offer suggestions regarding management. Students with AS are not uncommonly seen in mainstream educational settings, although often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, so this is a topic of some importance for educational personnel, as well as for parents. Since AS itself shows a range or spectrum of symptom severity, many less impaired children who might meet criteria for that diagnosis receive no diagnosis at all and are viewed as "unusual" or "just different,"or are misdiagnosed with conditions such as Attention Deficit Disorder, emotional disturbance, etc. Many in the field believe that there is no clear boundary separating AS from children who are "normal but different." The inclusion of AS as a separate category in the new DMS-4, with fairly clear criteria for diagnosis, should promote greater consistency of labeling in the future.

The Geek Syndrome
Autism - and its milder cousin Asperger's syndrome - is surging among the children of Silicon Valley. Are math-and-tech genes to blame?
By Steve Silberman Nick is building a universe on his computer. He's already mapped out his first planet: an anvil-shaped world called Denthaim that is home to gnomes and gods, along with a three-gendered race known as kiman. As he tells me about his universe, Nick looks up at the ceiling, humming fragments of a melody over and over. "I'm thinking of making magic a form of quantum physics, but I haven't decided yet, actually," he explains. The music of his speech is pitched high, alternately poetic and pedantic - as if the soul of an Oxford don has been awkwardly reincarnated in the body of a chubby, rosy-cheeked boy from Silicon Valley. Nick is 11 years old. Nick's father is a software engineer, and his mother is a computer programmer. They've known that Nick was an unusual child for a long time. He's infatuated with fantasy novels, but he has a hard time reading people. Clearly bright and imaginative, he has no friends his own age. His inability to pick up on hidden agendas makes him easy prey to certain cruelties, as when some kids paid him a few dollars to wear a ridiculous outfit to school.

s="na";c="na";j="na";f=""+escape(document.referrer) Asperger's Syndrome is a newly recognized neurological disorder. It shares many of the same characteristics of autism, although people with Asperger's Syndrome do not have the accompanying disabilities. Those afflicted with this syndrome have difficulty understanding what those around them think and feel. As a result of this, they often behave inappropriately in social situations, or do things that may appear to be unkind or callous. Many Asperger sufferers have a difficult time in planning and coping with change despite average or above-average intelligence. This manifests itself as a notable lack of "common sense". There are many nuances to how this disorder affects the lives of those afflicted as well as the lives of their families. It is the spouses and the siblings and the children of those afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome whom we are trying to reach. Especially those whose relative has not been correctly diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome until well into their adulthood.

3 years to adult. We hold regular coffee mornings and evenings, information

getting together for a chat, a laugh and sometimes a cry about their family
member who has AS, in an understanding and supportive environment.

British Journal of Disorders of Communication 24, 107-121 (1989)
Autism, Asperger's syndrome and semantic-pragmatic disorder: Where are the boundaries?
    D. V. M. Bishop Department of Psychology, University of Manchester ABSTRACT The diagnostic criteria for autism have been refined and made more objective since Kanner first described the syndrome, so there is now reasonable consistency in how this diagnosis is applied. However, many children do not meet these criteria, yet show some of the features of autism. Where language development is impaired, such children tend to be classed as cases of developmental dysphasia (or specific language impairment) whereas those who learn to talk at the normal age may be diagnosed as having Asperger's syndrome. It is argued that rather than thinking in terms of rigid diagnostic categories, we should recognise that the core syndrome of autism shades into other milder forms of disorder in which language or non-verbal behaviour may be disproportionately impaired. Key words: autism, Asperger's syndrome, semantic-pragmatic disorder.

My name is Kevin Phillips and I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome on Wednesday 31st May 2000 at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield after suspecting I had the condition for some time. I didn't celebrate or burst into tears when I was diagnosed, but I felt relief that I had finally found an answer to why I was different. This is the best thing I have ever done in my life and I haven't looked back since. I would like to have a T-shirt printed with "I have Asperger's Syndrome" on the front and "But it is other people that I suffer from" on the back. This isn't meant literally but there is certainly a great deal of truth in it. Before any of you ask, no I am not the Kevin Phillips who plays for Southampton FC, neither have I ever played for Sunderland. If I had a pound for every time someone asked me this then I would be as rich as him. When soccer fans shout 'There's only one Kevin Phillips' they ought to be reminded that it isn't true because I am alive at the time of writing. I don't always have the time or the chance to explain what the condition is in detail so I thought that the best way to do so would be by designing a website.

Asperger's Syndrome? You had just landed on another planet and you did not know the inhabitants, their language, their customs, how they interacted or how you should behave in their presence
Trying to find your way in a crowd, in a foreign country with only jumbled signposts to follow, and directions which you can only partially understand.
Not being able to talk, use your hands, use facial expressions or gestures, and you had not been taught sign language.
As soon as we meet a person we make all sorts of judgements. Just by looking we can often guess their age or status, and by the expression on their face or the tone of their voice we can tell immediately whether they are happy, angry or sad and so respond accordingly. If we are to examine the community in which we live, we often find people who are 'odd' in their thinking and 'different' in their behaviour. KEY CHARACTERISTICS Difficulty with Social Relationships People with Asperger's Syndrome try hard to be sociable and do not dislike human contact. However, they still find it difficult to understand social etiquette and non-verbal signals, including facial expressions.

Factsheet 12, for parents and teachers Autism and Asperger’s syndrome are disorders of psychological development which are due to abnormalities in the way the brain develops and functions. About three quarters of children with autism are severely affected and also suffer from general learning disabilities. Children with fewer or less severe problems may be described as having ‘autistic spectrum disorders’. Children with Asperger’s syndrome are mildly affected and usually have normal or above-average intelligence. Autism affects about 5 in 10 000 children. Many more have mild symptoms. Boys are much more commonly affected than girls. Autism normally shows itself in the first three years of life. Asperger’s syndrome is a less well-defined condition and may not be recognised until after a child starts school. What are the signs?
