21. Om Aspergers Syndrom/About Asperger S Syndrome
What is Asperger s Syndrome? Translation Bullying and aspergers syndrome I have aspergers syndrome, something I wasn t diagnosed with before I was 30.
http://home.online.no/~ojmalm/aspergers.htm
Jeg har dessverre fått noen kommentarer på dette fra "fjortiser" som har sett det jeg har skrevet her. Pussig nok er det bare de som bryr seg om det.
I have Asperger's syndrome or high functioning Autism. I also have Epilepsy and tics, involuntary muscle twitching.
To control the Epilepsy I take a medication, Lamictal.
I also know that I have a rare genetic disorder, a chromosome translocation between chromosome 11 and chromosome 19 wich is causing it all.
I have never had friends, or wanted to have any, nor a girlfriend.
When I finally got the diagnose at age 30, after wondering about what was wrong with me all my life, all the complexes I had suffered from because I didn't have friends or couldn't find a girlfriend disappeared.
The day I got my Asperger's diagnosis I stopped looking at myself as a virgin or a bachelor and started to see myself as an Autistic person.
What I mean by saying this, is that instead of struggling with sexual frustrations I try to get rid of them. I've got no problem about being open about this.
Sadly I've received comments on this from some kids. Oddly enough it's only they who care about it.

Last Modified 2/8/99 In 1944, a Viennese psychiatrist named Hans Asperger published a paper in which he described a group of children with a propensity towards social isolation and awkwardness. While these children displayed some 'typical autistic behaviours' they differed from children with autism in that they had normal intellectual development in some areas of their lives. In recent years, Asperger Syndrome has increasingly been recognised by professionals and parents. The need for a basic understanding and practical information about Asperger Syndrome is the foundation of this book. The information is presented in an easy-to-read style and avoids unnecessary technical jargon. A number of case studies are given, demonstrating the range of behaviours found in children and youth diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and describing how families have adjusted to life after diagnosis. It is a book that is accessible to both professionals and lay people.

by Barb Durso, MD Asperger Syndrome (AS) or disorder is a neurological disorder characterized by poor social interactions, obsessions, odd speech and mannerisms. The syndrome is considered part of the spectrum of pervasive developmental delay and is sometimes referred to as "high-functioning autism." Related Articles Attention Deficit Disorder School Problems Autism Guide Speech Delays Internet Links About Pediatrics ADHD Mental Health Information for Children Like children with autism and other pervasive development delay disorders, children with Asperger syndrome have difficulty with social interactions . They have the most difficulty with interpreting nonverbal cues from other people such as facial expressions and body language. Direct eye contact may be difficult. As a result, they have a hard time forming friendships with their peers. In addition, they do not seek to share interests or experiences with other people. For example, if they like toy trains, they do not bring the toy over to someone to show it off.

Broadcast Monday 22 April 2002
with Norman Swan Summary:
There's a growing trend, particularly in the United States, to diagnose children with disorders which are similar to autism but much milder. Transcript:
Norman Swan: Welcome to the program. Today on The Health Report, remarkable psychological research that suggests that whether you’re white or black yourself, you respond differently to black people according to how black they are. That’s later, after tackling what some experts are warning is going to be the next behavioural epidemic after Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD. There’s a growing trend, particularly in the United States, to diagnose children with disorders which are similar to autism but much milder. One label applied to people with a mild degree of autistic symptoms is Asperger’s Syndrome. But there’s a much wider spectrum of diagnoses being made. It’s shaping up to be a significant debate, and given how quickly we tend to follow American trends, these diagnoses are already washing against Australian shores. To try to sort out myth from reality, I went to Yale University in Connecticut to speak to one of the world’s leading authorities in autism, Professor Fred Volkmar, who, as you’ll hear, is doing some fascinating research using the movies.

Aspergers syndrome and discrimination in Swedish icehockey
Aspen LSS Bad treatment in the Swedish Labour Market Vinnys world ... Version in Swedish This article describes two approaches to handling the situation faced by a slightly handicapped young boy on a Swedish ice-hockey team. Aspergers syndrome (sometimes called high Functioning Autism) is a form of illness that occurs among people who are normally gifted, and sometimes even very gifted in a narrow area. About 0.5% of all boys have Aspergers syndrome. The symptoms may vary, but problems in social interaction, difficulty in accepting change, outbursts of rage, and peculiar talk and fantasies are some of the symptoms that can be mentioned. There is no specific treatment or cure for Aspergers disorder. Among interventions the following can be mentioned: individual psychotherapy to help the individual to process the feelings aroused by being socially handicapped parent education and training behavioral modification social skills training educational intervention My son (born in 1985), who lives at home with us, his parents, in a suburb (Täby) north-east of Stockholm, has this handicap. In his special case, the illness is characterised by somewhat odd behaviour and difficulties in concentration. The ability to speak came late to him. On the other hand, he feels a lot of empathy, which is often said to be lacking in people who are autistic. Earlier, he had outbursts of rage and difficulty in sleeping, but he has become a lot more calm nowadays. It has been determined that he has a shortage of the hormone thyroxin. (Thyroxin is produced by the thyroid gland, which influences growth and development.) However, apart from this, he is quite healthy.

Links Asperger's Syndrome ~ What is Asperger's? Aspergers Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder named after the Austrian psychiatrist Hans Asperger, who first documented the condition in 1944. It is often described as a pervasive developmental dysfunction said to lie within the "high functioning end" of the autistic spectrum of disorders. It's primary characteristics are similar to those of Autism, yet it can be differentiated from Autism by later onset, and relatively well preserved language and cognitive abilities, but the disorder in manifestation can range from mild to severe. While language development appears normal, individuals with AS tend to be extremely literal and exhibit problems using language in a social context.

What is Asperger Syndrome
Prevalence
Current estimates suggest that 1 in 150 of the population may have AS. That's an estimate 150,000 to 200,000 Canadians.
The latest studies (2001) from the National Autistic Society in the UK suggests individuals with ASD with an IQ over 70 (a hallmark of AS) make up 71 per 10,000 or .7% of the population. Time Magazine notes in its May 6, 2002 issue cover story, ASD is five times as common as Down syndrome and three times as common as juvenile diabetes Why Haven't I Heard of Asperger Syndrome
Although first identified by Dr. Hans Asperger in Austria in 1944, the work of Asperger was only translated into English in 1991 and did not make its way into the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic Statistical Manual until 1994. For decades, individuals with AS went un - or misdiagnosed with any number of related or entirely unrelated disorders. With the recent recognition there has been an astronomical increase in the number of identified individuals with AS in North America. This manifold increase does not seem to lie strictly in better diagnostics. Debate about the causes of autism and AS and their dramatic increase worldwide all point to the desperate need for more and wider research.

Asperger Syndrome
Asperger Syndrome (also known as Asperger Disorder) is a relatively new category of developmental disorder, first recognized officially in the DSM in 1994. Briefly, Asperger Syndrome is thought to be the mildest of a spectrum of developmental disorders known as autism. As with other conditions of autism, it is a neurological disorder of unknown cause. Children with Aspergers present with deviations in social skills, problems with communication, behavioral characteristics involving repetitive features, and a limited but intense range of interests. While children with AS have been spoken of as having “a dash of autism,” it is not entirely clear that Aspergers is truly a form of autism, or whether it is related only in the similarities of signs and symptoms. Since AS itself has a wide range of severity, less impaired children who might meet the criteria for that diagnosis are sometimes not diagnosed at all, or are misdiagnosed with ADHD or other emotional disturbances. There are five children with Aspergers for every child who presents with classic autism, although some may not have been correctly diagnosed with the syndrome, so it is not a rare disorder at all. For reasons that are yet unknown, Aspergers is more common in boys than in girls. It appears to be associated with other types of disorders, including Tourette disorder, attention deficit problems, depression, and anxiety.

Asperger's Syndrome
News
What is Asperger's Syndrome?
Asperger's Syndrome , also known as Asperger's Disorder or Autistic Psychopathy, is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) characterized by severe and sustained impairment in social interaction, development of restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. These characteristics result in clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. In contrast to Autistic disorder (Autism) , there are no clinically significant delays in language or cognition or self help skills or in adaptive behavior, other than social interaction. Prevalence is limited but it appears to be more common in males. Onset is later than what is seen in Autism, or at least recognized later. A large number of children are diagnosed between the ages of 5 and 9. Motor delays, clumsiness, social interaction problems, and idiosyncratic behaviors are reported. Adults with Asperger's have trouble with empathy and modulation of social interaction - the disorder follows a continuous course and is usually lifelong.

Author's Bio:

According to those who know me the best, I am someone who: sings in the kitchen, loves children and animals, is intense and focused (sometimes to a fault!) about subjects that are important to me, is slow to anger, likes a challenge, has a kooky sense of humor, and is determined to fix things that are wrong. So there you have it, right from the sources. For my part, I would add that I love to read, garden, hike, dance, and cross-country ski when I can.

"Asperger's: What Does it Mean to Me?" by Catherine Faherty is a book that dramatically expands the understanding of high functioning autism and Asperger's to the caregiver as well as the individuals with these challenges. One chapter instructs the caregiver, either parent or professional, while the next leads the individual with Asperger's/HFA through a necessary adventure of self discovery. The unique binding makes it easy to copy lessons to be used over and over again. Asperger's: What Does It Mean to Me?
Faherty, Catherine This workbook gives children and teens with high-functioning autism and Asperger's Syndrome an opportunity to understand themselves and their diagnosis. Explaining that autism is "another way of thinking and being", it offers activities that help children understand learning styles, sensory experiences, artistic talent, other people, communication, the school environment, friends, and feelings. In each of these areas, introductory material is addressed to the parent, teacher, or therapist explaining how they can help structure the child's experience in order to promote understanding and positive interaction. Special binding allows for easy photcopying for classroom use.
Dr. Gary Mesibov, director of the TEACCH program in North Carolina states, "The author's marvelous ability to understand the perspectives of people with autism and her wonderful talent of explaining difficult concepts at a level they can understand is very special. This book is a very unique opportunity to help people with autism . . ."

The Asperger’s diagnosis for my son Fred when he was 12 was a life-changing experience for me. When I read what it meant, the diagnosis explained all that had puzzled me about him. The information refocused me toward others—historical enigmas like Thomas Jefferson and people now trying to cope in a world managed poorly by neurotypicals. Trained in writing and political science, I’d found a cause—championing the self-worth and rights of individuals who are developmentally “different.”
