Although today we are well aware of the danger of asbestos, it is easy to forget that until comparatively recently the substance was exploited commercially to improve health and safety. Asbestos can withstand heat and damp extremely well, and it was therefore used widely for roofing and insulation purposes, particularly in the construction and shipping industries.
From the 1930s to the 1960s, the level of public awareness of the hazards of asbestos gradually increased. One of the obstacles towards a more rapid acknowledgement of the danger and the implementation of suitable health and safety legislation is that asbestosis and other related diseases have a long latency period. Typically, an individual working with asbestos and inhaling dust might not start to suffer related symptoms until perhaps 30 years later. UK asbestosis claims, together with claims in respect of other conditions such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural plaques are now increasing and most observers agree that the trend will continue to rise for the next 10 years.

The Asbestosis Surveillance Section About Asbestosis Asbestosis is a chronic fibrotic lung disease which results from the long-term inhalation of respirable asbestos fibers. The Asbestosis Surveillance section maintains a database of information on cases of asbestosis in the state of Texas. Texas law requires that designated professionals, primarily physicians and laboratorians, report specific information regarding certain disease and other adverse health conditions to the state health department. This is how asbestosis is reported in Texas and is known as passive surveillance. The Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology Program (EOEP) receives the report and acts on the information received based on a standard protocol. With passive surveillance, the EOEP does not employ staff to actively seek out cases. Since 1986 the EOEP has augmented the passive reporting of asbestosis required by law by conducting quarterly reviews of death certificates to identify certificates with asbestosis listed as a cause of death. In addition, the EOEP also visits doctors offices and abstracts information from records of reported asbestosis cases.

... Internet Resources: Asbestos Asbestosis Asbestosis is a non-cancerous condition caused by exposure to asbestos. It is caused by asbestos fibers that become lodged in the lungs. As the lungs try to protect the body from these foreign bodies, scar tissue develops and diminishes the lung's capacity for oxygen. Asbestosis is a progressive disease: as the scarring of the lungs gets worse, the lungs' vital capacity continues to decrease. Asbestosis can cause severe shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, and lead to heart problems. Asbestosis may also be present in people suffering from asbestos-caused cancers such as mesothelioma and lung cancer, although asbestosis does not develop into these or any other form of cancer. Asbestosis, as with all other asbestos-related diseases, is a latent disease. This means that asbestosis typically develops many years after a person's initial exposure to asbestos. The latency period for asbestosis is typically 15 or more years after initial exposure, but can be sooner or later than that time period. Asbestos is a "dose-response" disease. That means that the more asbestos a person is exposed to, the higher his risk for developing asbestosis.

ASBESTOSIS
ASBESTOSIS
Asbestosis is defined as diffuse interstitial fibrosis of the lung as a consequence of exposure to asbestos dust. Neither the clinical features nor the architectural tissue abnormalities sufficiently differ from those of other causes of interstitial fibrosis to allow confident diagnosis without:
  • a history of significant exposure to asbestos dust in the past; or
  • the detection of asbestos fibres or bodies in the lung tissue greatly in excess of that commonly seen in the general population.
Asbestos body Reproduced with the kind permission of Edward Klatt, MD,
Professor of Pathology, University of Utah This long thin object is an asbestos fibre - the causative agent for asbestosis. Symptoms of asbestosis include dyspnoea and cough. Common findings are inspiratory basilar crackles and less commonly, clubbing of the fingers. Functional disturbances can include gas exchange abnormalities, a restrictive pattern, and obstructive features due to small airway disease. Key Point: Asbestosis is generally associated with relatively high exposure levels.

The symptoms for asbestosis include shortness of breath, dry cough, rales or crackles heard through a stethoscope and/or fatigue.
Asbestosis, like mesothelioma, may have a long latency period of thirty years or more. However, the first signs or symptoms of asbestosis can occur much sooner, depending upon the amount and length of exposure that is involved.

Asbestosis is mechanical damage to the lung caused by inhaling asbestos . The asbestos fibers tend to irritate the lung tissue causing inflammation. The condition may not surface for years after the inhalation of asbestos, and many times asbestosis takes more than twenty years to manifest itself. The inflammation and scarring caused by the lodged asbestos fibers eventually cause breathing difficulties (from shortness of breath to respiratory failure) and may lead to mesothelioma and lung cancer (especially in smokers). Other complications include

    Feb, 1999 by William Weiss
This review examines the hypothesis that excess lung cancer risk in worker cohorts exposed to asbestos occurs only among those with asbestosis. The adequately designed studies in the literature support this hypothesis. The summary relative risk for lung cancer was 1.00 in seven cohorts with no deaths from asbestosis. In addition, there is a high correlation between asbestosis rates and lung cancer rates in 38 cohorts in contrast to a poor correlation between cumulative exposure data and lung cancer relative risks in eight cohorts with adequate data. The evidence indicates that asbestosis is a much better predictor of excess lung cancer risk than measures of exposure and serves as a marker for attributable cases. Summary
    • Disablement benefit cases for asbestosis have risen erratically, but rather strongly since the early 1980s, reaching a peak of 563 in 2002. Based on Death certificates The industry groups with the highest incidence rates of DWP assessments for asbestosis, based on 2000-2002 figures, were construction (including insulation work and stripping), extraction, energy and water supply, and manufacturing.
Overall scale of disease including trends
Asbestosis is defined as lung fibrosis caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical features, X-ray appearances and a history of heavy asbestos exposure. Cases may sometimes not be recorded as asbestosis because they may be mistaken for other types of lung fibrosis or may go undiagnosed. It is generally recognised that heavy asbestos exposures are required in order to produce clinically significant asbestosis within the lifetime of an individual. Current trends therefore still largely reflect the results of heavy exposures in the past. Table IIS06 shows the number of new cases of asbestosis (and other forms of pneumoconiosis) assessed under the Industrial Injuries Scheme, while Table ASIS01

London-based lawyers say compensation payments to South African asbestos miners are nearing completion. London solicitors Leigh Day are representing the claimants in their legal bid for compensation by Cape PLC.
A few days ago, a ninth round of compensation payments was made to miners and less than 7% of the claimants are still to receive payments worth R121 million in total.
The long-running battle for compensation ended a year ago when the British High Court approved a settlement.
