What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis is an irritation, inflammation, and infection of the appendix (a narrow, hollow tube that branches off the large intestine). The appendix functions as a part of the immune system during the first few years of life. After this time period, the appendix stops functioning and other organs continue helping fight infection. Although the appendix does not seem to serve any purpose, it can become diseased and, if untreated, can burst, causing infection and even death.
What causes appendicitis?
Appendicitis occurs when the interior of the appendix becomes filled with something that causes it to swell, such as mucus, stool, or parasites. The appendix then becomes irritated and inflamed. The blood supply to the appendix is cut off as the swelling and irritation increase. Adequate blood flow is necessary for a body part to remain healthy. When blood flow is reduced, the appendix starts to die. Rupture (or perforation) occurs as holes develop in the walls of the appendix, allowing stool, mucus, and other substances to leak through and get inside the abdomen. An infection inside the abdomen known as peritonitis occurs when the appendix perforates. Appendicitis may occur after a viral infection in the digestive tract or when the tube connecting the large intestine and appendix is blocked or trapped by stool. Because of the risk of rupture, which may occur as soon as 48 to 72 hours after symptoms begin, appendicitis is considered an emergency and anyone with symptoms needs to see a physician immediately.

August 03, 2000 Appendicitis: The Warning Signs
By Michael Woo-Ming, MD, MPH

PersonalMd.com Medical Contributor
Appendicitis is perhaps the greatest worry for parents when their child has significant abdominal pain. Working in an urgent care clinic, "Is it an appendicitis?" was probably the most asked question by a concerned parent about a child who was groaning from stomach problems. There are many misconceptions about this disease and it's a constant dilemma to decide if the abdominal pain your child is feeling right now is something that can wait or if they should rush into the emergency room right away.
What Is The Appendix?
The appendix is a cylindrical structure that is found at the end of the small intestine. As far as we know, it has no apparent function in the human body.
What Is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis occurs when this structure becomes inflamed and swollen from pus. It's most often seen in the age group of 10 to 30 and is the number one abdominal surgical emergency, with up to 80,000 surgeries performed in the U.S. each year. Preventing the appendix from "bursting" and causing the spread of infection is the reason why proper diagnosis and appropriately timed surgical intervention is paramount. Peritonitis, an inflammation of the abdominal lining, is a life threatening illness that may result without surgical intervention.

What are the risk factors for appendicitis?
Appendicitis affects seven percent of the US population and is the most common reason for a child to need emergency abdominal surgery. Most affected by appendicitis are young people between the ages of 11 and 20. And, most cases of appendicitis occur in the winter months between October and May. Having a family history of appendicitis may increase a child's risk for the illness, especially in males, and having cystic fibrosis also seems to put a child at higher risk.

Appendicitis
What is the appendix?
The appendix is a coiled, eight to twelve centimetre tube attached to the caecum (the first part of the large intestine), usually located in the lower right side of the abdomen.
What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. This can be caused by an infection or blockage of the appendix. With a blockage, the appendix can become swollen and easily infected by bacteria. If the diagnosis is delayed, the appendix can rupture. This results in peritonitis or the formation of an abscess around the appendix.
What are the most common signs and symptoms of appendicitis?
  • abdominal pain that starts near the belly button, then moves to the right side
  • fever
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea or constipation
  • change in a child's behaviour
How can the doctor be sure its appendicitis?
The diagnosis of appendicitis can usually be made by examining your child and discussing their symptoms. Blood tests, an ultrasound or other investigations may be done if the diagnosis is less certain. The diagnosis can be more difficult in younger children. Sometimes, the diagnosis isn't suspected until the appendix has ruptured.
Treatment of appendicitis
The best treatment of appendicitis is removal of the appendix. Once diagnosis is confirmed, the earlier surgery is done the better (within the first 48 hours). Delay makes rupture of the appendix more likely, and if this happens, infection spreads within the abdominal cavity (peritonitis). The operation may be done through a single incision over the appendix or by laparoscopy or 'key hole' surgery. Some antibiotics are given at the time of the operation to reduce the chance of infection.

Definition
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, which is the worm-shaped pouch attached to the cecum, the beginning of the large intestine. The appendix has no known function in the body, but it can become diseased. Appendicitis is a medical emergency, and if it is left untreated the appendix may rupture and cause a potentially fatal infection.
Description
Appendicitis is the most common abdominal emergency found in children and young adults. One person in 15 develops appendicitis in his or her lifetime. The incidence is highest among males aged 10-14, and among females aged 15-19. More males than females develop appendicitis between puberty and age 25. It is rare in the elderly and in children under the age of two. The hallmark symptom of appendicitis is increasingly severe abdominal pain . Since many different conditions can cause abdominal pain, an accurate diagnosis of appendicitis can be difficult. A timely diagnosis is important, however, because a delay can result in perforation, or rupture, of the appendix. When this happens, the infected contents of the appendix spill into the abdomen, potentially causing a serious infection of the abdomen called peritonitis Other conditions can have similar symptoms, especially in women. These include

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the cecum, the beginning of the colon, on the lower right side of the abdomen. The appendix is not necessary for life, but it can become diseased. If untreated, an inflamed appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis can affect people at any age. It is most common in people ages 10 to 30. The cause of appendicitis is usually unknown. It may occur after a viral infection in the digestive tract or when the opening connecting the large intestine and appendix is blocked. The inflammation can cause infection, a blood clot, or rupture of the appendix. Because of the risk of rupture, appendicitis is considered an emergency. Anyone with symptoms needs to see a doctor immediately. Symptoms include
  • pain in the right side of the abdomen nausea vomiting constipation diarrhea inability to pass gas low fever that begins after other symptoms abdominal swelling anorexia
The pain usually begins near the navel and moves down and to the right. The pain becomes worse when moving, taking deep breaths, coughing, sneezing, and being touched in the area.

The appendix is peritonitis. To prevent this complication, an infected appendix should be removed surgically. Appendicitis affects approximately one in 500 children under the age of 14 each year in the United States. It is rare in children under two, but at that age the consequences can be more serious. WHEN SHOULD I SUSPECT THAT MY CHILD HAS APPENDICITIS?
Appendicitis in a child may be difficult to diagnose because there are so many reasons for abdominal pain, and young children often cannot communicate just how bad the pain is. Appendicitis should be suspected if the pain begins as a dull or vague discomfort near the navel and then sharpens and localizes as it moves toward the lower right section of the abdomen, the site of the inflamed appendix. Within a few hours, the intensifying pain becomes constant and the lower abdomen becomes extremely sensitive to the touch. Symptoms of appendicitis do not follow any set pattern, however. The precise location of the appendix varies from person to person and so will the focus on the pain. Frequently, the pain will be felt in the side, back or anywhere in the lower abdomen.
