Appendicitis Appendicitis can occur at any age but it most often affects people between the ages of 10 and 30 and is one of the most common reasons for emergency abdominal surgery in children. Males are slightly more affected than females. Signs and Symptoms The main symptom of appendicitis is pain that begins centered around the belly button, which later shifts to the right side of the abdomen. The pain usually increases over a period of about 6 - 10 hours, BUT this can vary and eventually the pain may be very severe. The location of your pain may also vary, depending on your age. Young children may have appendicitis pain in different places. In addition to pain, you may have one or more of the following symptoms: Pain that begins centered around the belly button, then localizes to the right side
Loss of appetite
Nausea and sometimes vomiting
A fever that starts after other symptoms appear Diagnosis The diagnosis of appendicitis is best made on the basis of a history of the symptoms and a physical exam. When pressure on the painful area is suddenly released, appendicitis pain will often feel worse! Blood tests may show an elevation in the white blood cell count.

APPENDICITIS What is the appendix? The appendix is a small hollow organ attached to the large intestine located in the right lower part of the abdomen. Like the tonsils and adenoids, it contains a large number of lymph glands. If the appendix becomes inflamed, a condition called appendicitis results and the organ will have to be removed. The appendix is not necessary for health and can be taken out at an early age without adverse effects. Diagram of intestines, including appendix Close-up of the appendix, coming off of the cecum (the portion of the colon located in the right lower side of the abdomen) What are the signs and symptoms of appendicitis? The most common signs and symptoms of appendicitis are abdominal pain, tenderness, vomiting and fever. The pain may be around the navel (belly button) but soon moves to the lower right portion of the abdomen. The most painful area is located halfway between the hip bone and the navel, but may vary. The child may be bent over with the pain and may prefer lying down on the left side with the knees drawn up to the chest. Vomiting, and refusal to eat may be other signs of appendicitis. Diarrhea may be present. How is appendicitis diagnosed?

Anyone can develop appendicitis, but it most often strikes people between the ages of 10 and 30 and is one of the most common reasons for emergency abdominal surgery in children. The standard treatment for appendicitis is surgical removal of the appendix. In many cases the surgery is straightforward, and you recover quickly. But if your appendix has ruptured, the surgery may be more complicated and you'll take longer to heal. A ruptured appendix that's not promptly treated can lead to serious complications such as infection. In rare instances a ruptured appendix can be fatal.

  • What Is It? Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small, fingerlike tube that hangs from the lower right side of the large intestine. The purpose of the appendix is not known. It usually becomes inflamed because of an infection or an obstruction in the digestive tract. If untreated, an infected appendix can rupture (burst) and spread the infection throughout the abdominal cavity and into the bloodstream.

What is an appendix and what causes appendicitis?
Your appendix is a small, closed tube that is about the size of your finger. It attaches to the beginning of your large intestine, where the small and large intestines meet. It is open at the end that connects to the large intestine and closed at the other end, so material can move into and out of the appendix but it has nowhere to go. The appendix can contract like the small intestine, and it also has a secreting lining like the small intestine. If the open end of the appendix gets plugged for some reason either because of swelling or because something from the large intestine gets stuck in the opening then the appendix starts to swell because of the secretions from the lining. The swelling shuts off the

    What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix , a 3- to 6-inch hollow sac attached to the large intestine (colon) at the point where the large and small intestines join. The appendix is located in the lower right area of the abdomen. The appendix has no known function. Normally, the appendix is open to the intestine, but it can become blocked by hardened stool, swollen tissue, or parasites. Appendicitis occurs when bacteria grow in the blocked appendix and cause it to become swollen and infected. If the infection progresses, the swelling can cut off the blood supply to the appendix, killing the tissue. The wall of the appendix then ruptures and the infection spills into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis

At first, appendicitis may seem a lot like stomach flu. The classic symptoms are abdominal pain, fever , and vomiting . (In rare cases, it can also cause diarrhea.) But if children's acetaminophen doesn't reduce his fever and if he can't keep anything down, including water, he may have appendicitis, especially if the stomach pain worsens over a few hours and seems to be located in the lower right quadrant of his abdomen. What is appendicitis?

    What is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the cecum, the beginning of the colon, on the lower right side of the abdomen. The appendix is not necessary for life, but it can become diseased. If untreated, an inflamed appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis can affect people at any age. It is most common in people ages 10 to 30. The cause of appendicitis is usually unknown. It may occur after a viral infection in the digestive tract or when the opening connecting the large intestine and appendix is blocked. The inflammation can cause infection, a blood clot, or rupture of the appendix. Because of the risk of rupture, appendicitis is considered an emergency. Anyone with symptoms needs to see a doctor immediately. Symptoms include
    • pain in the right side of the abdomen nausea vomiting constipation diarrhea inability to pass gas low fever that begins after other symptoms abdominal swelling anorexia
The pain usually begins near the navel and moves down and to the right. The pain becomes worse when moving, taking deep breaths, coughing, sneezing, and being touched in the area.

Appendicitis by Dr Trisha Macnair What is it? Symptoms Further help What is it? Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, which is a small extension off the side of the large bowel that has a short worm-like shape. In other animals the appendix plays a vital role in the breakdown and digestion of vegetable matter but it appears to be redundant in humans - and we can live quite happily without it. What causes it? Appendicitis is caused by infection. It's not clear why the infection occurs but one theory suggests that bacteria normally found within the gut invade through the wall of the appendix to cause inflammation and infection, possibly as a result of weakness in the body's normally defences. Who is affected? Appendicitis can occur at any age but is common among children. What are the symptoms The child typically describes pain which is in the centre of the abdomen and which is colicky (comes and goes). The pain then shifts to the iliac fossa (lower outside edge of the abdomen) on the right side. There is loss of appetite and sometimes vomiting although this is rarely severe. There may be constipation or sometimes diarrhoea. The child will be feverish and may show a dry, furred tongue, flushed face - and may be lying still, taking shallow breaths due to the pain. However, sometimes the symptoms are not typical and appendicitis should be considered whenever there is severe or persistent abdominal pain. But the diagnosis is easily mistaken and nearly half those operated on are found not to have appendicitis. It may be confused with food poisoning, mesenteric adenitis (inflammation of lymph nodes in the abdomen) and urinary infections.
