DISORDERS GLOSSARY Aphasia
(as defined by the NAA

Aphasia Fact Sheet The use of speech to communicate is unique to humans. When speech is impaired or absent, the impact on the person and his family is profound. One of the most heartbreaking and devastating disabilities is aphasia. Most people have not heard about aphasia, nor do they know the term until someone in their family or a friend acquires aphasia. What is aphasia? Aphasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write. Aphasia is always due to injury to the brain-most commonly from a stroke, particularly in older individuals.

Queensland University Aphasia Groups What is aphasia-friendly? Everyday we read lots of information: in newspapers magazines signs on television and the INTERNET. People with aphasia find it difficult to read words, and therefore understanding information is difficult. We need to change the way we write and present information, so that people with aphasia can understand it. This website is "aphasia friendly" because it used the points below. Follow these points to make your materials "aphasia friendly". (Madeline Cruice, 2000) 4 points of aphasia friendly: Write in simple words and big print Use lots of white space (don't crowd the page with text) My name is Jane. I am 57 years old. aphasia Aphasia is an advanced scripting language for the web. It features a type-safe core, C++ modules with signatures, an optimizing "compiler", higher-order functions, built-in database support, garbage collection, and more. Aphasia uses FastCGI to talk to an apache web server, and only cooperates with mySQL. Because of these dependencies, installation is pretty complicated. I don't recommend installing it unless you're really interested in development. I've only ever compiled it on linux, but it would probably work on other systems with apache/fastcgi/mysql with a little tweaking. A working prototype exists right now ("Aphasia 1 Prototype"), but a new version is being actively hacked on (as of 7 Feb 2004). Aphasia 2 incorporates many ideas based on lessons learned from the first prototype, but is "sideways-compatible" with Aphasia 1 code. Please see CVS for code. For examples of sites built with aphasia, see spacebar and snoot.org . If you'd like to get involved with the project, please contact me Tom 7

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~jpd3n/aphasia.html
Aphasia
Aphasia is a complex acquired neurogenic disorder in which there are problems with speaking or speech is lost. It is due to an injury to certain areas of the brain. There are many forms and degrees of aphasia. For example, a patient with aphasia may be able to speak but not to form words that can be understood. The patient may be able to understand speech and writing and form thoughts, but not be able to speak. Aphasia may be the result of a severe head injury, lack of oxygen, or stroke. It is sometimes short term, as when a swelling in the brain goes down and language returns. Constant hard work and practice by the patient and the patient's family have helped to restore normal speaking ability. There are a variety of differing types of aphasia classified by the patient's deficit in language ability. Broca's aphasia is characterized by an almost telegraphic speech pattern in which the words that are uttered are short and often agrammatic, while comprehension remains comparatively intact. Wernicke's aphasia is characterized by fluent speech, but poor comprehension.
