IMMEDIATE COUNSELING FOR FEAR OF FLYING If you saw my comments in USA Today on Friday, September 14th, you would read that flying as it applies to accident risk is the same (we have had NO accidents/fatalities in the US with any of the third generation airliners: 757, 767, 777, or Airbus A-319 and higher model numbers). But terrorism is a new concern. Security prior to 9/11 had not been taken seriously in this country. Hopefully, public pressure will continue to demand improvements until security is what it should be. Once real security is in place, flying will be safer than ever!

Anxiety Disorders
Everybody knows what it's like to feel anxiousthe butterflies in your stomach before a first date, the tension you feel when your boss is angry, the way your heart pounds if you're in danger. Anxiety rouses you to action. It gears you up to face a threatening situation. It makes you study harder for that exam, and keeps you on your toes when you're making a speech. In general, it helps you cope. But if you have an anxiety disorder, this normally helpful emotion can do just the oppositeit can keep you from coping and can disrupt your daily life. Anxiety disorders aren't just a case of "nerves." They are illnesses, often related to the biological makeup and life experiences of the individual, and they frequently run in families. There are several types of anxiety disorders, each with its own distinct features. An anxiety disorder may make you feel anxious most of the time, without any apparent reason. Or the anxious feelings may be so uncomfortable that to avoid them you may stop some everyday activities. Or you may have occasional bouts of anxiety so intense they terrify and immobilize you.

A patient information handout on generalized anxiety disorder, written by Courtenay Brooks, medical editing clerkship student at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., is provided on page 1602. See editorial
on page 1492.
A nxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder and social phobia, are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the United States, and patients with these disorders are more likely to seek treatment from a primary care physician than from a psychiatrist. Patients with anxiety disorders are more likely than other patients to make frequent medical appointments, to undergo extensive diagnostic testing, to report their health as poor and to smoke cigarettes and abuse other substances. Anxiety disorders, particularly panic disorder, occur more frequently in patients with chronic medical illnesses (e.g., hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes) than in the general population. Conversely, patients with anxiety disorders are more likely than others to develop a medical illness

anxiety in children
Main Diseases and Conditions
Childhood and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders
by William T. Goldman, MD Anxiety symptoms and disorders are the number one health problem in America, ranging from a simple Adjustment Disorder to more difficult and debilitating disorders such as Panic Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. According to the most recent data, the lifetime prevalence for anxiety disorders as a whole in adults is about 25%; the frequency in children is unknown, but felt to be significantly underreported and under-diagnosed. More specifically Social Anxiety Disorder has a lifetime risk of 17%, while Panic Disorder occurs in approximately 1-3% of the adult population. Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is a subjective sense of worry, apprehension, fear and distress. Often it is normal to have these sensations on occasion, and so it is important to distinguish between normal levels of anxiety and unhealthy or pathologic levels of anxiety. The subjective experience of anxiety typically has two components: physical sensations (e.g., headache, nausea, sweating) and the emotions of nervousness and fear. Anxiety disorders, when severe, can affect a child's thinking, decision-making ability, perceptions of the environment, learning and concentration. It raises blood pressure and heart rate, and can cause a multitude of bodily complaints, such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, ulcers, diarrhea, tingling, weakness, and shortness of breath, among other things.

http://www.ljlseminars.com Do your knees feel like Gumby's when you have to get up and speak in front of a group? Do you feel like the next words out of your mouth are going to be the dumbest words ever uttered by a human? If you said yes to either of the questions above, be advised, you have a full-blown case of stage fright, says Lenny Laskowski, a professional speaker and President of LJL Seminars. According to the book of lists, the fear of speaking in public is the #1 fear of all fears. The fear of dying is #7! Over 41% of people have some fear or anxiety dealing with speaking in front of groups. People who have this fear can experience all kinds of symptoms: Sweaty palms, accelerated heart rate, memory loss and even difficulty in breathing. Some of the world's most famous presenters have freely admitted to nervousness and stage fright. Mark Twain said it best, "There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars". Everyone, even experienced speakers, has some anxiety when speaking in front of a group of people. This is perfectly normal. The best way to deal with this anxiety is to first acknowledge that this fear is perfectly normal and you are not alone. To reduce your fear, you need to make sure you properly and thoroughly prepare yourself before you speak. Proper preparation and rehearsal can help to reduce this fear by about 75%. Proper breathing techniques can further reduce this fear by another 15%. Your mental state accounts for the remaining 10%.

ABOUT HELP CONTACT Wednesday, June 02, 2004 Home Sleep Disorders > Ativan etc. (Lorazepam) Ativan etc. (Lorazepam)
Ativan etc. (Lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine medication used to treat convulsive disorders such as epilepsy, and to relieve panic disorder and anxiety. As Lorazepam has sedating properties it is also used as a sleep aid. Benzodiazepines like Lorazepam act by enhancing the actions of a natural brain chemical, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is a neurotransmitter, a chemical that carries messages between brain nerve cells. GABA inhibits the transmission of nerve signals, thereby reducing nervous excitation.
