104. Smoking May Lead To Anxiety Disorders In Adolescents And Young Adults
Recent research shows that tobacco products may cause anxiety, panic attacks and fear of leaving home.
http://www.nida.nih.gov/NIDA_Notes/NNVol16N1/Smoking.html
Research Findings Volume 16, Number 1 (March, 2001)
Smoking May Lead to Anxiety Disorders in Adolescents and Young Adults
Using a wealth of data obtained through a 25-year longitudinal study, NIDA-funded researcher Dr. Judith Brook of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, Dr. Patricia Cohen of Columbia University in New York, and their colleagues have documented adverse effects of smoking in several critical areas of functioning during young adulthood. Most recently, the team has reported a connection between tobacco use by adolescents and young adults and the likelihood that they will develop agoraphobia (fear of leaving home or of the outdoors), generalized anxiety disorder, or panic disorder. Analyzing data from their Children in the Community study, funded by NIDA and the National Institute of Mental Health, the researchers were able to separate the effects of smoking from the effects of age, gender, childhood temperament, alcohol and other drug abuse, and depression among the adolescents, as well as parents' smoking, education, and behavioral and/or mental health problems. The researchers interviewed 688 youths and their mothers in 1983, between 1985 and 1986, and again between 1991 and 1993. A total of 69 of the youths smoked heavily - at least 20 cigarettes every day - and experienced an anxiety disorder during adolescence, early adulthood, or both. Of these 69 youths, 29 (42 percent) began smoking before they were diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The remaining 40 youths were split between those who were diagnosed with anxiety disorders before they reported heavy smoking (13, or 19 percent) and those who reported smoking and were diagnosed with anxiety disorders at the same interview session (27, or 39 percent).

Parents
Everyone, from the youngest child to the oldest adult, experiences anxieties and fears at one time or another. Feeling anxious in a particularly uncomfortable situation never feels very good. However, with children, such feelings are not only normal, they are also necessary. Experiencing and dealing with anxieties can prepare young people to handle the unsettling experiences and challenging situations of life. Read on to understand the differences between anxieties, fears, and phobias, and how you can help your child deal with them. Anxieties and Fears Are Normal
Anxiety
is defined as "apprehension without apparent cause." It usually occurs when there is no immediate threat to a person's safety or well being, but the threat feels real. Anxiety makes a person want to escape the situation - fast. His heart beats quickly, he may begin to perspire, and "butterflies" in the stomach soon follow. "However," says Katharina Manassis, MD, author of Keys to Parentin g Your Anxious Child , "as uncomfortable as it feels, a little bit of anxiety can actually make people perform better because it keeps them alert and focused on what they have to do." Having fears or anxieties about certain things can be helpful too because it makes kids behave in a safe way. For example, a kid with a fear of fire would avoid playing with matches.

Performance anxiety - why do we perform?
I am a baritone soloist and have performed serious music, in public, for some thirty years. The first time was for my entire high school class at graduation where I did the Coronation scene from Boris Goudonov. For the first fifteen years, it was not always a pleasant experience. I got nauseous and shook like a leaf before, during and after nearly every performance. At one point, during a Messiah performance in the middle of `But Who May Abide', I asked myself why I was doing this. Even though scared half to death, my heart in my throat, blood pounding in my ears, I continued, almost compulsively, to seize every opportunity to perform that I could. I was determined to overcome the problem. It was always worst when I tried to achieve perfection. This was usually in front of other students at weekly recitals in graduate school, when I just knew that they were taking exquisite note of my every mistake.

Home Forums Chat Gear ... Links Social Anxiety Disorder What is Social Anxiety Disorder?
Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is an intense fear of social situations. This fear arises when the individual believes that they may be judged, scrutinized or humiliated by others. The anxiety can be specific to one social situation or can be more general in nature.
Common anxiety provoking social situations include:
  • public speaking
  • talking with people in authority
  • dating and developing close relationships
  • making a phone call or answering the phone
  • interviewing
  • attending and participating in class
  • speaking with strangers
  • meeting new people
  • eating, drinking, or writing in public
  • using public bathrooms
  • driving
  • shopping

Physical symptoms that may occur during, or in anticipation of, the situation include:
  • rapid heartbeat
  • sweating
  • muscle tension
  • upset stomach
  • trembling
  • shaky voice
  • dry mouth
  • blushing
  • queasiness
  • ticks
  • hyperventilation
  • difficulty making eye contact
In extreme cases this intense uneasiness can progress into a full blown panic attack. The victim may experience shortness of breath, heart palpitations, numbness in hands and feet, or even a sense of being outside of ones own body.

university of texas at dallas/student counseling center/su 1.608/972 883-2575 Test Anxiety
What is Test Anxiety?

The term "test anxiety" refers to the emotional reactions that some students have to exams. The fear of exams is not an irrational fear - after all, how you perform on college exams can shape the course of an academic career; however, the excessive fear of exams interferes with your ability to be successful in college.
What are the Components of Test Anxiety There are three components of test anxiety. The physical component involves the typical bodily reactions to acute anxiety: a knot in the stomach, wet and trembling hands, nausea or "butterflies in the stomach," ache in the shoulders and back of the neck, dry mouth, pounding heart, etc. The emotional component involves fear or panic - as one student put it, "I become completely unglued!" The mental or cognitive components of test anxiety involve problems with attention and memory -"My mind jumps from one thing to another" and worry "I'm certain to fail".
One approach to reducing test anxiety is to learn how to relax. It is possible for students to learn how to relax on cue, so that anxiety can be controlled during the exam. Learning how to relax is fairly simple, but if you want to be able to do it on your next exam, you will have to practice it beforehand. Follow these steps:

Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Ativan
These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician. Ativan [posted 12//08/98]
Question: Answer: Ativan is addicting both to you and your fetus. It should be avoided if possible, while pregnant. Drugs like prozac, paxil etc can be used-but, the effect on the fetus is less well known. I'd probably recommend as low a dose of ativan as possible. But, you're in a bit of a pickle. Anxiety does not cause asthma, but anxiety often makes one feel short of breath.(Then again so does pregnancy). Ativan General Information [posted 10/13/98]
Question: W ould you please help me by finding this medication fundamental and the need for it. I must do research on Ativan, for school, thanks. Answer: Happy to help;but, what do you need? Ativan belongs to a class called benzodiazepines which are used for sedation, anxiety disorders etc. I would refer you to a basic text like Goodman and Gilman's Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics by Hardman(available in all medical libraries and most large libraries) for a long discussion. Ativan Dependency Concerns [posted 10/13/98]
Question: I have a prescription to take ativan for anxiety and wonder what the proper way is to take it. Should it only be used sometimes during anxious periods or on a daily basis? I am concerned about dependency. Also, are there problems taking it with St Johns Wort?

university of texas at dallas/student counseling center/su1.608/972 883-2575 Overcoming Social Anxiety The college years can be a crucial time for practicing and improving social skills to be used in one’s personal and professional life. Shy students often find this task challenging. While there may be many causes of shyness, a few common themes predominate; low self esteem and an accompanying fear of rejection; excessive concern for others’ approval; and the memory of a past hurtful social experience. When students suffer from these or other causes of shyness, they may be likely to avoid others, be absent from campus extracurricular functions, not speak up in class, be unable to initiate casual conversations or ask someone for a date. They may also have trouble asking for help, standing up for themselves in difficult situations, or give the appearance of being uninterested in others. If I am a shy student what can I do to learn to feel more comfortable in social settings? These tips may help the shy student to feel more confident.
  • Adjust your attitude ; -This can be done on two fronts; changing your unrealistic expectations of your own behavior and changing your distorted perception that others will condemn you if you are not perfect. Practice replacing your self-critical thoughts with more supportive ideas. For example, "Most people can handle it when someone makes a mistake", "It would be nice if this had turned out differently, but it’s not the end of the world", " No one else is perfect. I don’t have to be either."
