Wednesday, 8 November, 2000, 01:55 GMT Smoking 'increases anxiety risk'
Teenage smokers may be storing up psychological problems
Smoking is supposed to calm the nerves, but researchers have found evidence that it might have the opposite effect. A team from the New York's Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute found that smoking may increase the risk of some anxiety disorders for teens and young adults. They found that teenagers who smoke at least one pack of cigarettes a day are at greater risk of developing agoraphobia, generalised anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in young adulthood.
When a product exerts such profound influences on the brain, we should not be surprised if there are serious long term and negative consequences
Clive Bates, Action on Smoking and Health The researchers studied data on 688 teenagers from upstate New York. The teenagers were interviewed between 1985 and 1986, when their average age was 16, and between 1991 and 1993 when their average age was 22. When interviewed as teenagers, 39 (6%) smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day, and 44 (6%) had anxiety disorders.

This site is a self-help guide for people who have significant trouble with anxiety and phobias.
Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it becomes a disruptive force in their life. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to learn how to tame this anxiety and enjoy your life. You may already know that these kinds of problems are called "anxiety disorders." Most of the people I work with dislike this name, and I don't care much for it either. But it's so widely used that we're stuck with it, and so I'll use it here. The name's not important. What's important is learning how to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't disrupt your life. For those of you who may have suffered a long time, and are feeling pretty hopeless and pessimistic about it, let me just mention that these problems are:

This site began in 1996 with an idea and a dream.
The dream was that no one would have to face the fear and loneliness that the "panic monster" can cause. The dream became a reality and we now offer to you the most comprehensive information available on the Internet.
Y ou are out living your day to the fullest... walking in the sunshine, reading a great novel, cooking a special dinner and you are stricken by an irrational and intense terror.... Nothing in the outside world has changed, but your heart is racing, you're having trouble breathing, and you feel a sense of impending doom. A panic attack is a sudden surge of overwhelming fear that that comes without warning and without any obvious reason. It is far more intense than the feeling of being ' stressed out ' that most people experience. One out of every 75 people will experience a panic attack at one time in their lives

Test Anxiety
Generally, we all experience some level of nervousness or tension before tests or other important events in our lives. A little nervousness can actually help motivate us; however, too much of it can become a problem — especially if it interferes with our ability to prepare for and perform on tests.
Dealing with Anxiety
The first step is to distinguish between two types of anxiety. If your anxiety is a direct result of lack of preparation, consider it a normal, rational reaction. However, if you are adequately prepared but still panic, "blank out", and/or overreact, your reaction is not rational. While both of these anxieties may be considered normal (anyone can have them) it is certainly helpful to know how to overcome their effects.
Preparation Can Help
  • Preparation is the best way to minimize rationale anxiety. Consider the following: Avoid "cramming" for a test. Trying to master a semester’s worth of material the day before the test is a poor way to learn and can easily produce anxiety. This is not the time to try to learn a great deal of material.

A time where a carefree attitude and a worry-less life provide the environment in which a child grows and develops. For many children, however, this isn't always the case. Research shows that 12 million American children suffer from some type of mental illness. It also shows that fewer than one in five receive the treatment they need to recover from their illness. When we think about topics such as depression or anxiety, we don't normally think of them as including young people. Most adults don't consider that emotional problems may effect a child, too. The reality is that children today deal with emotional issues and stress, the same as adults. Understandably, they often have a more difficult time handling and overcoming painful emotions and situations.

My representation of darkness is what I am. So many people are only skin deep, living their life as it comes, never really contemplating the choices and actions of their life. It's like surface tension, you can sit there on top of the water all your life, but one little drop of dishsoap and it's all over, and you're struggling to just get up to the surface, watching all the other people on top of their water with one eye, and watching the drain with the other, trying to decide which is better, the life of ignorance and bliss you just left, or the truth as it pulls you down. I choose the truth.
