Recognizing Stress
Most people are exposed to much higher levels of stress than they realize.
Your Stress Scale
A self-test you can use to determine how much stress your are really facing.
Brain Chemical Messengers
Brain cells "talk to each other" by means of chemical messengers. When a person is exposed to too much stress, chemical communication in the brain begins to fail. When these messengers fail, a person suffers from sleep disturbance, aches and pains, depression and anxiety. This condition is called OVERSTRESS.
Three Happy Messengers
Three brain messengers control your sleeping, your energy levels, and your feelings of pain and pleasure.
Pick-Me-Up's
Chemicals from the grocery store shelf, as well as drugs, can temporarily restore your brain messenger function but not completely, and not for long. These substances are called "Pick-Me-Up's." Pick-Me-Up's are the WRONG way to handle overstress.

Generalized anxiety disorder Alternative names Return to top Anxiety; Feeling uptight; Stress; Tension; Jitters; Apprehension Definition Return to top Stress can come from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or anxious. What is stressful to one person is not necessarily stressful to another. Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension or fear. The source of this uneasiness is not always known or recognized, which can add to the distress you feel. Considerations Return to top Stress is a normal part of life. In small quantities, stress is good it can motivate you and help you be more productive. However, too much stress, or a strong response to stress, is harmful. It can set you up for general poor health as well as specific physical or psychological illnesses like infection, heart disease, or depression. Persistent and unrelenting stress often leads to anxiety and unhealthy behaviors like overeating and abuse of alcohol or drugs. Emotional states like grief or depression and health conditions like an overactive thyroid, low blood sugar, or heart attack can also cause stress.

Have you ever been afraid? Everyone has been scared at some time. Does a thunder and lightning storm make your heart beat fast? Maybe your mouth goes dry when your teacher announces a pop quiz, or your palms sweat when it's your turn to give your book report in front of the class. Perhaps you get butterflies in your stomach when you see the bully that picks on you. Everyday Worries
We all have fears from time to time. That's true no matter how big we are or brave we can be. Fear can even be good for you sometimes and even help you stay healthy. Fear of walking near the edge of a high wall can keep you from falling; fear of getting too close to a campfire may save you from suffering a bad burn; and fear of getting a bad grade on a test may make you study more. Being a bit on edge can also sharpen your senses and help you perform better in a recital or during a track meet. Some people even enjoy being a little scared. That's why they like to watch scary movies - or go on roller coaster rides.

S TRESS, T RAUMA, A NXIETY, F EARS AND P SYCHOSOMATIC D ISORDERS
All our lives long, every day and every hour we are engaged in the process of accommodating our changed and unchanged selves to changed and unchanged surroundings; living, in fact, is nothing less than this process of accommodation; when we fail in it a little we are stupid, when we fail flagrantly we are mad, when we suspend it temporarily we sleep, when we give up the attempt altogether we die.
-Samuel Butler, The Way of All Flesh Empty your mind of all thoughts.
Let your heart be at peace...
Each separate being in the universe
returns to the common source.
Returning to the source is serenity...
When you realize where you come from,
you naturally become tolerant, disinterested,
amused, kindhearted as a grandmother,
dignified as a king...
you can deal with whatever life brings you, and when death comes, you are ready. -Lao-tzu, The Book of The Way , 500 B.C., translated by Stephen Mitchell We have studied in chapters 3 and 4 about values to guide our lives and about how to control our behavior. In chapters 5 to 8, we turn our attention to four generally unwanted, unpleasant emotionsstress, depression, anger, and dependency. First, we will study stress, anxiety, and fears, because these are the most common emotional problems.
