Like stage fright, math anxiety can be a disabling condition, causing humiliation, resentment, and even panic. Consider these testimonials from a questionnaire we have given to students in the past several years:
I've never been successful in any math class I've ever taken. I never understand what the teacher is saying, so my mind just wanders.
What all of these students are expressing is math anxiety, In this essay we will take a constructive look at math anxiety, its causes, its effects, and at how you as a student can learn to manage this anxiety so that it no longer hinders your study of mathematics. Lastly, we will examine special strategies for studying mathematics, doing homework, and taking exams. Let us begin by examining some social attitudes towards mathematics that are especially relevent.

We subscribe to the HONcode principles of the Health On the Net Foundation Celebrating our Sixth Year on the Internet ! Have you ever thought that you can take the power back from your anxiety disorder? It can seem so difficult as our panic, anxiety and fears seem to have the power of us. But we can change this. We can take back our power. We just need to be shown how. How do we know? We have been there. We know. We know the frustration, we know the feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, we know the daily struggle in trying to get our lives back. And we also know that we can. We did. And we have been teaching other people with an anxiety disorder how to do this with our Australia and New Zealand Mental Health Award winning Mindfulness Cognitive Panic Anxiety Management Workshops. Our main focus is to teach people how to Take Back the Power from their anxiety disorder and this is reflected throughout our site. We do not provide medical advice and our website is not a replacement for professional treatment, but complimentary to it. Much of the information provided on our site is based not just on our own experience, but also the experience of thousands of other people who have attended a workshop, participated in one of our own research projects or who have given us feedback via email. Like us.....
You too can TAKE BACK THE POWER !

Self-Help Support Groups
Self-help and support groups for anxiety disorders are a way of empowering people to help themselves, and others, on the path to recovery. Participation in a self-help group can end the painful isolation of suffering alone with a disorder that is disruptive and debilitating for the individual and those people around him/her. An effective group will help members achieve recovery through mutual support as well as provide them with updated information about causes and treatment, eliminating some of the myths about anxiety disorders. The ADAA Self-Help Support Group Network is available in nearly all states and various countries around the world. The list of support groups is provided as a service of the ADAA, but it does not represent an evaluation or recommendation by the association. Furthermore, the ADAA does not endorse the use of a self-help group as a substitute for proper diagnosis and treatment. Please check with your treatment provider about the benefits of joining a support group as part of one's overall treatment regimen.

Everybody knows what it's like to feel anxious the butterflies in your stomach before a first date, the tension you feel when your boss is angry, and the way your heart pounds if you're in danger. Anxiety rouses you to action. It gears you up to face a threatening situation. It makes you study harder for that exam, and keeps you on your toes when you're making a speech. In general, it helps you cope. But if you have an anxiety disorder, this normally helpful emotion can do just the opposite it can keep you from coping and can disrupt your daily life. There are several types of anxiety disorders, each with their own distinct features. An anxiety disorder may make you feel anxious most of the time, without any apparent reason. Or the anxious feelings may be so uncomfortable that to avoid them you may stop some everyday activities. Or you may have occasional bouts of anxiety so intense they terrify and immobilize you.
