Alternate meanings in Anthrax (disambiguation)
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis and is highly lethal in its most virulent form. Anthrax most commonly occurs in wild and domestic herbivores, but it can also occur in humans when they are exposed to infected animals, tissue from infected animals, or high concentrations of anthrax spores. Still there are no case of people who got sick through contact with a diseased person. Anthrax means " coal " in Greek , and is used because victims develop black skin lesions Anthrax infection is rare but not remarkable in herbivores such as cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and antelopes. Anthrax can be found globally. It is more common in developing countries or countries without veterinary public health programs. Certain regions of the world ( South and Central America , Southern and Eastern Europe Asia Africa , the Caribbean, and the Middle East ) report more anthrax in animals than others. Exposure
When anthrax affects humans, it is usually due to an occupational exposure to infected animals or their products (such as skin and meat). Workers who are exposed to dead animals and animal products from countries where anthrax is more common may become infected with

by Roxane Bates My husband, Major Sonnie Bates, reported for duty at Dover AFB, DE in August 1999. Within a few weeks of his arrival he learned of people in his squadron becoming seriously ill after taking the anthrax vaccine. The list is as follows: Michelle P. suffered from thyroid damage, an autoimmune disorder, chronic fatigue, and dizziness. She was grounded for several months and recently separated from the Air Force. Bill L. was grounded for several months. After the vaccine, he developed cysts on numerous places on the inside and outside of his body, to include his heart. He has undergone surgery to remove some of the cysts and was hooked up to an IV for six weeks. Jean T. suffered from a widespread rash over most of her body after receiving the vaccine. Jim G. suffered from severe chronic joint pain, thyroid damage, and has an autoimmune disorder. At times he had both of his arms in braces due to the severe joint pain. John S. has an autoimmune disorder, diagnosed after taking the anthrax vaccine.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Pentagon must stop forcing servicemen and women to take the anthrax vaccination against their will, unless President Bush signs a special order, a judge ruled Monday. Millions of shots have been given and hundreds of service members have been punished for refusing them since the mandatory vaccinations started in 1998. The judge ruled that the anthrax vaccinations fell under a 1998 law prohibiting the use of certain experimental drugs unless people being given the drug consent or the president waives the consent requirement.

Be cereus about anthrax toxin
Plasmid-encoding toxin found in B. cereus By John Dudley Miller
A plasmid coding for the anthrax toxin has been found in a sample of Bacillus cereus taken from a person who survived a life-threatening pneumonia symptomatic of inhaled anthrax. The finding, reported in the advanced online edition of PNAS , is the first time the complete plasmid has been found in any naturally occurring microbe other than Bacillus anthracis. The study grew out of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) review of reported cases of unusually severe illnesses caused by these or other Bacillus species. The researchers did not study cases of anthrax of the skin. They note that 2 years ago, other scientists found one of the genes for the anthrax toxin in two fatal cases of pneumonia caused by B. cereus. But those samples were not further characterized, so if the plasmid was present, it was not found. B. cereus is known to cause food poisoning, but rarely causes pneumonia. However, when scientists at the CDC and at the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) quickly sequenced the DNA of their pneumonia-causing sample, they found a plasmid outside the bacterium's single chromosome that is 99.6% genetically similar to the plasmid in anthracis , pX01. In anthrax, that codes for the three-part toxin.

Inhalation Anthrax Bacteria Respiratory system Alternative names Return to top Anthrax - inhalation Definition Return to top Inhalation or respiratory anthrax is an infectious disease caused by inhaling the spores of the bacterium Bacillus anthracis Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Anthrax is caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis . While anthrax commonly affects hoofed animals such as sheep and goats, humans may acquire this disease as well. Historically, the main risk factor for acquiring inhalation anthrax is breathing in "aerosolized" anthrax spores from industrial processes such as tanning hides and processing wool. Anthrax is a potential agent for use as a biological weapon or bio-terrorism. While at least 17 nations are believed to have a biological weapons program, it is unknown how many nations or groups are working with anthrax. Most bio-terrorism experts have concluded that it is technologically difficult to use anthrax effectively as a weapon on a large scale. Inhalation anthrax develops when anthrax spores enter the lungs. A person may have spores in the nasal passages (which indicates exposure), but that doesn't mean they will get the disease. In fact, antibiotic therapy following known or suspected exposure can help prevent the disease.

Gupta: Isolated anthrax case extremely rare
(CNN) A Florida man diagnosed with anthrax is an "isolated case," U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said, and his illness is not linked to any threats of bioterrorism against the United States. JFK Medical Center spokeswoman told CNN on Friday morning that the 63-year-old man from Lantana, Florida, remains in critical condition. CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta spoke to CNN anchor Aaron Brown about anthrax. BROWN: I've been in this line of work since I was 18 years old 30 years. I have never reported a case of anthrax in my career that I can remember. How rare is it, not just in this country, but anywhere? GUPTA: Aaron, there's only been 18 cases of inhaled anthrax between 1900 and 1976, and not a single case before today of inhaled anthrax over the last 25 years. I went to medical school here, I never saw a case. I think we glossed over it in textbooks. It's a very rare thing, and it took Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be able to make the diagnosis.

N.Y. postal machines test positive for anthrax
NEW YORK (CNN) Six bar code sorting machines and a freestanding dust extractor have tested positive for anthrax at Manhattan's largest postal facility, the Postal Service said Thursday. MORE STORIES EXTRA INFORMATION Anthrax through the ages Preliminary tests found only four infected machines on the third floor of the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center, but more complete results Thursday showed more contamination. The facility will remain open while the machines are being decontaminated, said Postal Service area Vice President David Solomon. The Postal Service said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an additional 50-day supply of antibiotics to Morgan employees who work on the second or third floors. Distribution is set to begin on Friday. More than 7,000 New York City postal employees received a 10-day supply of Cipro last week.

CNN: NBC Employee Tests Positive for Skin Anthrax
Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 Friday morning, an already anxious public was jolted by news of a fourth case of anthrax, this one found in an unidentified female employee of NBC News in New York City. The disease in this case has been identified as cutaneous anthrax, a far less deadly type than the inhaled anthrax traced to the three tabloid employees in Florida. NBC officials say the woman, who is expected to fully recover, received and opened a suspicious letter on or around September 25th (the letter contained a powder substance, which tested negative for the disease). She reported the letter to the authorities, began getting tested for anthrax and started taking the antibiotic Cipro. She tested negative until this week, when she began exhibiting symptoms, including a lesion on her skin. FBI and CDC officials are on the scene in New York City; Mayor Giuliani says parts of Rockefeller Center will be closed off for a few days, and other NBC employees will be tested.

Microsoft letter probably didn't contain anthrax, Nevada officials say
RENO, Nevada (CNN) A suspicious letter sent to a subsidiary of Microsoft "probably" did not contain anthrax, health officials said, adding that conclusive results may be available Saturday. Earlier, state health officials said the first test on the letter's contents "had tested presumptively positive for anthrax." But a second round of test results, released late Friday, did not show signs of the bacteria. Microsoft Licensing Inc., which handles licensing of Microsoft software and is based in Reno, received the letter, according to the Nevada Division of Emergency Management. If you receive a suspicious package:
  • Handle with care; don't shake or bump
  • Isolate and look for indicators

Anthrax Mailings Claim: Fear of exposure to anthrax delivered by mail is running high. Status: True. Origins: During the fall of 2001 the news was filled with stories of suspect envelopes housing mysterious powders delivered through the mail. Sometimes those stories proved to have something to them (e.g.,. the 12 October 2001 report about an NBC worker in New York who was exposed to a cutaneous form of anthrax on September 25) , and sometimes they didn't (e.g., the 12 October 2001 closure of a Colorado post office after the discovery of an unknown substance that turned out to be pudding powder). Further influencing the growth of that climate of fear was the memory of an older baseless scare widely touted on the Internet, the Klingerman At a time like that, it was helpful to gain a better understanding of what anthrax was and (more importantly, in terms of helping to quell concerns about mysterious powders arriving in envelopes) why it was unlikely foreign terrorists were the ones mailing anthrax-laden powders to various people. Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis . It most commonly occurs in wild and domestic lower vertebrates (cattle, sheep, goats, camels, antelopes, and other herbivores), but it can also occur in humans when they are exposed to infected animals or tissue from them. Spores would be released, for instance, from the decomposing body of an animal that contained the bacteria. Anthrax can also be acquired through eating the meat of such an animal or through handling its flesh or any part of it.

New York City Hall received tape containing anthrax
var clickExpire = "-1"; //> SUMMARY: New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani confirmed Sunday that a tape sent by NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw's office to City Hall contained anthrax. Giuliani said the tape was sent in the first week of October, before Brokaw's assistant tested positive for the cutaneous form of the disease. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has vaccinated about 140 members of epidemiologic teams that can be summoned at a moment's notice to examine a suspected case anywhere in the country, the New York Times reported Sunday. President Bush went to the radio Saturday to assure the public that officials are making progress in the anthrax investigation. "As we learn more about these anthrax attacks, the government will share the confirmed and credible information we have with you," Bush said, noting that health officials were acting quickly to distribute antibiotics for those who may have been exposed to the bacteria.
