Florida man suffering from anthrax dies
WASHINGTON (CNN) A 63-year-old man hospitalized after contracting anthrax has died, hospital officials said Friday. Robert Stevens had been hospitalized since Tuesday when he checked himself into JFK Medical Center. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is heading the investigation into how Stevens caught anthrax. Palm Beach County, Florida, health officials noted the case is not a criminal investigation, and they believe he contracted the disease naturally. The FBI is available to assist as needed, officials said. ANTHRAX What is it? An acute infectious disease caused by a spore-forming bacterium. The spore produces a potentially fatal toxin. How does it spread? By inhalation or ingestion Symptoms: Appear within seven days. Inhalation cold-like symptoms to severe breathing problems and shock. Ingestion intestinal inflammation, vomiting blood, severe diarrhea. Death can occur within 24 hours of onset.

What is anthrax?
Anthrax is an infection caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracics . The bacteria form spores that can live in the soil for many years. The spores are extremely tiny and are invisible to the naked eye. In large quantities, the spores are usually brown and powdery and may look like cinnamon or cocoa. However, the colour may be different if the spores are mixed with another substance. They do not have an odour and you cannot smell them. The infection is spread by the spores. Anthrax usually occurs in farm animals such as cows and sheep. It is uncommon in humans.

Anthrax traces detected at FDA mailrooms
By Cleve Mesidor and Kevin Bohn CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) Preliminary tests on four mailrooms used by the Food and Drug Administration have come back positive for anthrax, an agency spokeswoman said Thursday, adding more tests are under way to confirm the contamination. The FDA spokeswoman said traces of anthrax were found in mailrooms at FDA headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, and three other FDA sites in that city. All four mailrooms are closed, she said. The four FDA sites did not get mail directly from the contaminated Brentwood processing center in Washington. It primarily received mail from a Postal Service "hub" in Shady Grove, Maryland, the spokeswoman said. The facility in Shady Grove received mail from several locations, including Brentwood. Antibiotics are being given to all FDA mailroom employees where there is possible exposure, she said.

Although anthrax is so rare that most doctors have not seen it, about 10 cases have been found in Washington, DC and New York. Bacillus anthracis Courtesy National Institutes of Health As the bacterial disease continues to claim victims, researchers today identified the door that anthrax toxin uses to enter and kill mammalian cells. Eventually, the discovery could lead to a treatment for inhaled anthrax. Today, by the time of diagnosis, the patient usually has a deadly dose of anthrax toxin, so antibiotics do not help at that point (skin anthrax, however, is much easier to treat). By showing how anthrax toxin enters cells, the discovery points toward a new, precise way to monkey-wrench the disease mechanism. Adding the new receptor protein to the blood of an anthrax patient might bind up anthrax toxin so it could not enter cells. The protein could also be used to screen for anti-anthrax drugs. Both accomplishments, unfortunately, remain in the future, stressed John Young, a cancer researcher at University of Wisconsin-Madison who helped make the discovery. The experiment, he emphasized, used cultures of rodent cells. The protein is in short supply, and animal and human experiments are yet to be done.

Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis . Anthrax most commonly occurs in farm animals, but it can also infect humans. Symptoms of disease vary, but usually occur within 7 days after exposure. The serious forms of human anthrax are inhalation (a respiratory infection), cutaneous (a skin infection), and intestinal anthrax. Anthrax contamination was detected in U. S. Senate office buildings and at several other locations across the United States. The EPA has been working closely with the Capitol Hill Police, the U.S. Postal Service, the Centers for Disease Control, the FBI, and other agencies to ensure that existing anthrax contamination is quickly identified and thoroughly cleaned up, and also to prevent future exposures. While anthrax cleanup is a new challenge, EPA and its partners have assembled an effective toolbox for tackling it. In a very short time, we've significantly advanced the science and technology of detecting and cleaning up anthrax.

FBI launches 'intensive' anthrax investigation
Special Agent Hector Pesquera says the FBI has not found additional evidence of anthrax. BOCA RATON, Florida (CNN) Federal agents investigating what they call a "limited" amount of anthrax at a Florida-based tabloid office began interviewing hundreds of people Friday in hopes of discovering the source of the bacteria. FBI officials said they planned to interview more than 800 people including 300 people who worked in the building, as well as frequent visitors and employees' relatives about the nature and origin of the anthrax spores found at the American Media Inc. building in Boca Raton. About 100 FBI agents will conduct the interviews, which are set to run through the weekend. "We've been conducting an intensive investigation to determine the source of the (anthrax)," said FBI Special Agent Hector Pesquera said Friday.

What is anthrax?
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacteria Bacillus anthracis . Anthrax most commonly occurs in warm-blooded animals, but can also infect humans. Who gets anthrax? Although anthrax among humans is extremely rare in the United States, anyone can get anthrax if they are exposed to contaminated wool, hides, leather or hair products (especially goat hair) of infected animals, or if they eat undercooked meat from infected animals. Workers who are exposed to dead animals and animal products from countries where anthrax is more common are at the highest risk. Although anthrax can be found globally, it is more common in South and Central America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. Anthrax in animals rarely occurs in the United States with most reports of animal infection coming from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

President: Anthrax investigation progressing
SUMMARY: President Bush went to the radio Saturday to assure the public that officials are making progress in the anthrax investigation. "As we learn more about these anthrax attacks, the government will share the confirmed and credible information we have with you," Bush said, noting that health officials were acting quickly to distribute antibiotics for those who may have been exposed to the bacteria. "I'm proud of our citizens' calm and reasoned response to this ongoing terrorist attack," he said. A mailroom at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington tested positive for anthrax, officials said Saturday. Swabs were taken in the mailroom October 30, and one tested positive. Administrators closed the mailroom and said they have no evidence that anthrax has spread at the facility in the nation's capital. State health officials in New Jersey said a mail-processing facility in Camden County tested positive for the presence of anthrax. Tests at the Bellmawr Mail Distribution Center, conducted by the FBI, turned up one sample that tested positive. Analysts took samples Wednesday after an employee was diagnosed with a suspected case of cutaneous anthrax.

ANTHRAX
Background
Anthrax is a disease normally associated with plant-eating animals (sheep, goats, cattle, and to a lesser extent swine). It is caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis and has been recognised as an illness for centuries. Once common where livestock were raised, it is now controlled through animal vaccination programs. Anthrax occurs mainly in countries where animals are not vaccinated. In many countries (such as Australia) it occurs infrequently, due to effective compulsory control measures.
Anthrax in Australia
The Communicable Diseases Network Australia (CDNA) is a Commonwealth body with representatives from the Commonwealth, State/Territory health agencies and other Government and research bodies. CDNA meets on a regular basis and keeps track of disease outbreaks within Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region. It is within this forum that a case of anthrax would be reported. An anthrax outbreak would most likely be first recognised in animals, and immediate control measures would involve quarantine and notifying relevant health authorities to look for symptoms in humans. The last reported human cases of anthrax (both cutaneous anthrax) in Australia occurred in July 1998 and February 1997. In July 1998, a 20-year-old forklift driver who worked as a labourer in a warehouse in Brisbane contracted anthrax.

Sources: Anthrax same in Leahy, Daschle letters
WASHINGTON (CNN) Tests on a letter sent to Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, confirm the presence of anthrax, and its potent grade matches that contained in a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, sources told CNN Monday. The results confirm what investigators had been expecting. The letter and envelope have now been transferred to labs at FBI headquarters for further analysis, following their decontamination at a U.S. military lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland, the sources said. Investigators will look for fingerprints, hair, DNA, fibers anything that might help them determine who sent it. Results from those tests could take weeks. The DNA tests are not expected to yield much information because the letter sent to Leahy, just like the one sent to Daschle, were sealed shut with tape and no saliva was detected.

Anthrax traces found at Connecticut mail facility
HARTFORD, Connecticut (CNN) Trace amounts of anthrax were found on four pieces of mail-sorting equipment in a postal facility that handled the mail of a woman who died of inhalation anthrax, the United States Postal Service announced Sunday. The same facility processed mail for the town of Seymour, where one residence received a letter that was found to have a trace of anthrax on it. A statement from Postal Service said the traces of bacteria were found at the Southern Connecticut Processing and Distribution Center in Wallingford, which handles mail for the small towns of Oxford and Seymour. Oxford resident Ottilie Lundgren, 94, died November 21, becoming the nation's fifth anthrax fatality. Seymour resident John Farkas received a letter at his home that investigators found to have a trace amount of anthrax on the envelope. No one in Farkas' household is ill, health officials said. Bill Gerrish, a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Health, called the discovery of traces of the bacteria at the postal facility an important finding in the investigation of Lundgren's death.

With exposures, theats and fumigations, Capitol Hill has been a focal point of the anthrax crisis. WASHINGTON (CNN) A U.S. Capitol Police officer was indicted, arrested and arraigned Friday for perpetrating an anthrax hoax in a Capitol Hill security office in November. Officer James Joseph Pickett, 35, was indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of a making false statement and one count of obstructing Capitol Police. He was arrested and pleaded not guilty at his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Deborah Robinson, according to prosecutors for the U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia. According to the indictment, Pickett wrote an anonymous note November 7 and placed it in a Capitol Police security station with arrows directed to a nearby quantity of white powder. The note, written in capital letters, said:

Anthrax is a colorless, odorless, tasteless bacterium that protects itself from sunlight, heat and disinfectant by forming a protective coat. With this coat, the bacterium is called a "spore." The spores are so small that even 8,000-10,000 spores appear smaller than a speck of dust. This is the amount that animal studies suggest could be required for a lethal dose, although scientists are considering a much smaller dose could cause anthrax in people.
