Report raises question of anthrax, hijacker link
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (CNN) A memorandum issued by a prestigious research center concluded that one of the September 11 hijackers might have been infected with cutaneous (skin) anthrax when he sought treatment at a Florida hospital before the attacks. The Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies' report raised questions about ties between Ahmed al-Haznawit who was treated at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale in June, 2001 and the spate of anthrax-laced letters sent through the U.S. mail that killed five in October and November. But a U.S. government source said that six months of painstaking investigation have yielded no evidence that the hijacker, who was treated for a skin lesion, was infected with cutaneous anthrax. "There's nothing new in this report," the source said. "We don't dismiss it, but we have been unable to make any connection between anthrax and the September 11 hijackers."

102. What Is Anthrax?
You may have heard about anthrax in the news. But what exactly is anthrax, and should you be concerned about it? Find kids.

KidsHealth Kids Kids' Health Problems Infections
You may have heard about anthrax and wondered what it is. Some people are worried that the germ that causes anthrax could be spread by people who want to use the disease as a weapon. Although this is a frightening thought, the government and police are working on ways to protect us. In the meantime, it's important not to panic over anthrax - the chance that you or someone in your family could ever get it is very small. One of the ways you can feel better is to learn about the disease. When you know what it is and how you can get it, it doesn't seem quite as scary. So here are answers to some questions you might have about anthrax:
  • What is anthrax?
Anthrax is an infection caused by bacteria (a type of germ) called Bacillus anthracis (say: buh- sil -us an- thray -sus). These bacteria make spores , a form of the germ covered by a protective shell. The spores can live for years in the soil, and they cause anthrax when they enter the body. Although the disease is most common in farm animals - like sheep, cows, and goats - there's a small chance that people can get it as well, usually from some type of contact with an animal or part of an animal that had anthrax.
  • How do people get anthrax?

Milzbrand-Erreger

Official: Unusual coating in anthrax mailings
From Kelli Arena CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) Scientists have found a new chemical in the coating on the anthrax spores mailed to journalists and politicians last fall, a high-ranking government official said Wednesday. The discovery of the unnamed chemical, something scientists are familiar with, was surprising, the official said. Previously, officials had reported that the coating on the anthrax included silica, which helped the spores not to clump. The purity, fineness and potency of the anthrax particularly that mailed to Sens. Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, and Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont makes it highly unlikely that the sender of the letters made and treated the spores in a makeshift setting, according to officials involved in the massive investigation.

Workers sent home after World Bank anthrax scare
WASHINGTON (CNN) Employees of the the World Bank were asked to work from home for the next few days after some mail tested positive for anthrax on Monday. World Bank spokeswoman Caroline Anstey told CNN that a bundle of mail tested positive after an initial test for anthrax, but then tested negative following a more extensive test. About 1,200 employees departed the World Bank, located in downtown Washington, at 4 p.m. EDT "as a precaution," she said. According to Anstey, no specific threats were received by the bank nor was there a specific piece of mail that seemed suspicious. The results of a culture analysis, which the bundle will now undergo, will be ready late Wednesday or Thursday, Anstey said. The World Bank is one of the world's largest sources of development assistance, working in more than 100 developing nations, according to a message on its Web site. It is headquartered in Washington and employs more than 8,000 people there.

An FBI investigator talks with a motorist at the entrance to Detrick Plaza Apartments next to Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. From Kevin Bohn CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The FBI searched an apartment Tuesday next to Fort Detrick, Maryland, in connection with the anthrax investigation, but so far the search has not turned up anything suspicious, a law enforcement official told CNN. The official said the apartment owner previously worked at the U.S. Army bioweapons laboratory at Fort Detrick but does not work there now. He consented to the search, which lasted several hours, the official said. The apartment is in a complex next to the fort. The law enforcement official said no arrest has been made and "no one is about to be arrested." The apartment resident has cooperated with authorities before, according to the source. On December 22, 2003, the US District Court ordered a halt on the mandatory requirement for military personnel to be vaccinated against anthrax. The military announced it will halt mandatory vaccinations, but continue voluntary anthrax vaccinations pending legal review. On December 29, 2003, the FDA ruled that the anthrax vaccine was effective against all forms of anthrax exposure. Subsequently, Federal District Judge Sullivan lifted the injunction against the military's anthrax vaccination program on 7 January 2004, except for the 6 military members filing the suit. On 8 January 2004, the military announced resumption of Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program.

Citing the criminal investigation and national security concerns, the Justice Department is trying to persuade a federal judge to delay the lawsuit filed by Dr. Stephen J. Hatfill, who contends the government invaded his privacy and ruined his reputation by leaking information to the media implicating him in the attacks. Army base package likely had no anthrax
Emergency response teams arrive at Fort McPherson after a suspicious package was found. Officials now say that is unlikely the package contained anthrax. ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A suspicious package containing powder found at the U.S. Army's Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia, almost certainly did not contain anthrax, a base spokesman said Saturday. The base received the news early Saturday in a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Lt. Col. Ken Konstanzer said. "It's 99 percent [certain that it is] not anthrax, but they want to wait a full 24 hours before giving it 100 percent," he said. A building on the U.S. Army installation was evacuated Friday after preliminary tests indicated the package contained anthrax. Six mailroom employees of the U.S. Army Reserve Command at Fort McPherson went through a decontamination process after being exposed to white powder inside the package, said Col. Guy Shields, the base's spokesman. None of the employees was hospitalized.
