Timeline: Anthrax through the ages
(CNN) Although it's surfacing anew as a terrorist weapon, the deadly anthrax disease has plagued the world for centuries, with reports of it dating back to biblical times. Anthrax is blamed for several devastating plagues that killed both humans and livestock. Soon after scientists learned more about it in the late 1800s, it emerged in World War I as a biological weapon. Several countries, including Germany, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Iraq and the former Soviet Union, are believed to have experimented with anthrax, but its use in warfare has been limited. 1500 B.C. Suspected anthrax hoaxer nabbed
WASHINGTON (CNN) Clayton Lee Waagner, the suspected author of hoax letters sent to abortion clinics that claimed to be contaminated with anthrax, was arrested Wednesday after eluding authorities for months, according to federal authorities. Law enforcement sources said the arrest was made shortly after 1 p.m. in the Cincinnati suburb of Springdale, Ohio, after an employee at a Kinko's photocopy store called the U.S. Marshals Service saying she believed Waagner was in the store. Marshals quickly called local police who responded within minutes. An officer entered the Kinko's, while Waagner hastily logged off a computer and ran outside, where more officers were waiting, said Geoff Shank, a senior inspector with the Marshals Service. "They got him within seconds," said Shank. "It was an incredible ending."

Vaccination against anthrax is critical for your protection. The vaccine is effective and safe. It is FDA-approved and has proven effective since 1970. This is a mandatory vaccination program to preserve the fighting force. The purpose of vaccination is to not only protect the individual servicemembers , but to ensure they can support their shipmates by being able to perform their function during combat operation during any enemy's anthrax attack.
    What is the Threat
Biological weapons are maintained by several countries around the world. Use of these weapons could cause widespread illness among unprotected military forces.

The current vaccine against anthrax is unsatisfactory for several reasons. The vaccine is composed of an undefined crude culture supernatant adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide. There has been no quantification of the protective antigen content of the vaccine or of any of the other constituents, so the degree of purity is unknown. Standardization is determined by an animal potency test. The undefined nature of the vaccine and the presence of constituents that may be undesirable may account for the level of reactogenicity observed. (p.636)

Economy on the front burner
Bush, shown here reading to third graders, plans to start the year with a focus on the economy and education. SUMMARY: The "E's" have it for President Bush, who has committed to concentrating on education and the economy, and he will begin pushing that agenda Saturday. But Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle started 2002 with a fresh assault on Bush's tax cut plans. In New York, the medical examiner determined the identities of the remains of seven people found at the World Trade Center site. UPDATE: Scott McClellan, White House deputy press secretary, said Bush's "first priority" this year will be urging Congress to pass what the White House now calls an "economic security" plan, measures to help laid-off workers and tax cuts to give a boost to the economy. ( Full story Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle delivers a speech Friday, but has already launched an election-year debate over the economy with a fresh slap at President Bush's tax cuts and a call for a "growth agenda" for a country hammered by terrorism and recession. "We can shortchange critical needs, such as strengthening homeland security, or we can raid the Social Security surplus and borrow money to pay for them," he said. "We cannot have it both ways." (

As recently as June 14, 1998, 60 Minutes ran a story concerning the use of anthrax as a weapon in major cities such as New York and Boston. Earlier this year, Secretary William Cohen appeared on the This Week programme using a 5 lb. bag of sugar to demonstrate the amount of anthrax bacillus necessary to devastate a major metropolitan city. While much information is being presented about the threat of anthrax as a weapon of mass destruction, little information is being disseminated concerning the reasons why anthrax can be used as a weapon or how to respond to its use. While anthrax is in its simplest term, a hazardous material, it is a disease that has had a long standing presence in human history. This article is an effort to consolidate the mass of information concerning anthrax from multiple unclassified sources. Anthrax in History The disease of anthrax infections has a long history with mankind. It is a bacterium that primarily effects grazing animals, such as sheep, cattle, goats and horses. Anthrax was known to ancient cultures, and is described to have killed 40,000 horses and 100,000 cattle in the possession of the Huns during their movement across Eurasia in 80 AD. As a considerable bane to the European livestock trade, throughout the 18th and 19th century, much effort was put into the identification and prevention of anthrax in animals. Anthrax (scientific name Bacillus anthracis) was the first microorganism identified as the cause of a specific disease by Dr. Robert Koch in 1876. Later that year Dr. Koch was growing Anthrax bacillus in his laboratory. Within the decade, Louis Pasteur for use in livestock developed a viable anthrax vaccine.

Anthrax As Disinformation The Biology of the Subject
Propaganda on biological weapons including anthrax originates in the dark cellars of government for the purpose of swaying the public for increased police powers.
With the war in Iraq, the public is paying an expensive price for allowing themselves to be lied to instead of finding out the facts. Disinformation in Media
An example of the disinformation is an article in a news weekly during the mid nineties. It listed each of the supposed terrorist weapons and the cost of producing them. For $10-20,000, terrorists could supposedly kill hundreds of thousands of persons with botulism toxin, anthrax, nerve gas, etc. "60 Minutes" had an expert who said biological weapons could be produced in someone's back yard in a five gallon bucket. They said anthrax spores released from a boat on the Hudson River could kill four hundred thousand persons in New York City. Anthrax is Trivial Here's the truth of the matter. Anthrax cannot be weaponized by terrorists, and it could probably never be used successfully as a military weapon. It has to be converted to spores suspended in the air, which is technically very difficult; and the lethality is nowheres near the terror that it is made out to be. It is not 100% lethal as often claimed. Wool sorters inhale anthrax spores in small quantities continually (150-700 per hour, or

Jeanne Guillemin: Anthrax risk and prevention
Jeanne Guillemin is a medical anthropologist, and a Professor of Sociology and Senior Fellow at MIT's Security Studies Program. In 1992, she was part of a team that investigated a suspicious anthrax epidemic that took place in 1979 in the former USSR. She is an affiliate of the Harvard-Sussex Program, which is involved with the elimination of chemical and biological weapons. CNN: Welcome to CNN.com Newsroom Jeanne Guillemin. We are pleased to have you with us today. What can you tell us about past anthrax scares that were thought to be not due to natural exposure? GUILLEMIN: Well, the major outbreak of inhalation anthrax happened in the Soviet Union in 1979. That was due to an aerosol emission from a military biological facility. It was the worst known outbreak in history. But what we're looking at today is more on the order of bio-crimes that fit a Unabomber model, much more than they fit a model of an epidemic. CHAT PARTICIPANT: In the past tests were conclusive about live anthrax, how do we know that the negative tested powder isn't lying dormant? And if it is, how many people will become infected?

Miltbrand (Anthrax)
Indledende klager patienten over utilpashed, hovedpine, feber og muligvis smerter i brystet.

From the American Psychological Association
How big is the actual threat?

How risks/threats get misperceived
How this might affect you No right way: Different coping styles for different people ... How can we help our children with their fears? Since September 11, Americans are dealing with a new and sometimes frightening reality. At the same time, we have been told that returning to our normal routines is best for the nation and best for our own emotional well-being. But, feeling normal again can, for many people, be difficult. One question we should all consider is, "how real is the actual threat to our loved ones and ourselves?" HOW BIG IS THE ACTUAL THREAT? It is important to keep in mind the scale of the actual threat. Anthrax, at this point, is a very limited threat. It has not infected large parts of the American population, and it appears that only the most high profile Americans are being targeted. The most common form of the infection, skin anthrax, is highly treatable. Inhaled anthrax, while much more serious, is also more rare. Statistically, one's odds of contracting anthrax are minuscule and many people do not have a rational assessment of the actual danger of harm from anthrax. Near constant news coverage of the anthrax scare can make the problem seem much larger than it is. One is more likely to die in a car accident than be infected with anthrax (40,000 Americans die annually from car accidents).

Schroeder office in anthrax scare
Envelopes containing suspicious powder like this one being examined in California have been found across the world BERLIN, Germany A white powder has been found in the mailroom at German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's offices as fears of anthrax attacks grow worldwide. Authorities were investigating whether the substance was dangerous, the German government said. The mailroom at the federal chancellery in Berlin was sealed off after two postal workers discovered the powder, which had trickled out of an envelope, a government spokesman told the Associated Press. The spokesman said there was no immediate indication whether there was a genuine threat. It was unclear whether Schroeder was in the building in central Berlin at the time. Investigations into possible deliberate infections of anthrax had also spread from the United States on Monday to France, Israel and Australia.

There's been a lot of discussion about anthrax on the news lately. What exactly is anthrax, and should you be concerned about it? Anthrax is an infection caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis . Although it's most commonly found in grazing animals like sheep, pigs, cattle, horses, and goats, anthrax can sometimes infect humans. In the environment, anthrax can form spores (a version of the germ in a hard shell) that can live in the soil for years. People can become infected by coming in contact with these spores through a break in their skin (such as a cut, scratch, or rash), by eating contaminated food (usually meat), or by inhaling the spores. But anthrax is not contagious; it can't be spread from person to person. Some people are concerned that anthrax is linked to the terrorist attacks of September 11 and that terrorists may be trying to spread the bacteria, particularly through the U.S. mail system. Be assured that federal and local officials, as well as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
