Police calm German anthrax fears
A policeman guards a sealed-off gas station in Wiesbaden WIESBADEN, Germany German police say initial tests on nine suspicious envelopes that created a panic in the town of Wiesbaden suggested none was carrying anthrax spores. The envelopes, bearing the message "The jihad is starting" spread fear in the Schierstein district where they were delivered on Wednesday morning. "There are no indications of anthrax," a police spokesman told a news conference on Thursday. He said the authorities had not yet ruled out the presence of some sort of biological or chemical agent. The envelopes had been taken to a Stuttgart laboratory for further testing. All 16 people who had come into contact with the envelopes were being kept under observation in hospital and given antibiotics as a precautionary measure. About 100 police and fire brigade officers were involved in the operation to seal the street and investigate.

There is so much confusion and there are so many extraneous details about the anthrax cases that have killed 5 people and made many more ill, that I decided it was time to assemble what little actual information that I could find on the Internet and to analyze it myself.
This was done for my own education, but I'm sharing it for others who might be interested.

Anthrax scare at British Embassy in Beijing
Security has been increased around the U.S. and British Embassies By Lisa Rose Weaver CNN BEIJING, China (CNN) The staff of the British Embassy in Beijing has begun anti-anthrax treatment after a suspicious package containing white powder arrived at the embassy, a British Embassy spokesman told CNN Thursday. Initial tests by Chinese quarantine officials Wednesday came up negative for the anthrax virus, but additional testing was being conducted. "At the moment, the Public Security Bureau is investigating the source of the package, and the health and quarantine departments are investigating the contents of the package," said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhu Bangzao. There was no sender's address on the package, but a letter inside was written in English, Zhu said without elaborating.

Anthrax as a Biological Warfare Agent
  • Anthrax is the preferred biological warfare agent because: It is highly lethal. 100 million lethal doses per gram of anthrax material (100,000 times deadlier than the deadliest chemical warfare agent). Silent, invisible killer. Inhalational anthrax is virtually always fatal. There are low barriers to production. Low cost of producing the anthrax material. Not high-technology. Knowledge is widely available. Easy to produce in large quantities. It is easy to weaponize. It is extremely stable. It can be stored almost indefinitely as a dry powder. It can be loaded, in a freeze-dried condition, in munitions or disseminated as an aerosol with crude sprayers. Currently, we have a limited detection capability. What is Anthrax? Anthrax is a naturally occurring disease of plant eating animals (goats, sheep, cattle, wine, etc.) caused by the bacterium

Anthrax vaccine gets good grade, but could do better
By Christy Feig CNN Medical Unit WASHINGTON (CNN) The current anthrax vaccine is safe and effective and can be used until a better one is developed, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Institute of Medicine. The report listed several drawbacks of the current vaccine, primarily that it must be given in six doses over 18 months. That means it wouldn't necessarily provide instant protection to a bioterrorism attack or help people quickly protect themselves. No vaccine is completely safe, the report said, but researchers found no unexpected short-term adverse reactions to the anthrax vaccine. However, the institute is urging the U.S. Department of Defense to create a system to monitor long-term health effects, of which evidence is limited. The only anthrax vaccine currently approved for human use in the United States is made by BioPort Corp. in Lansing, Michigan. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1970, primarily for veterinarians, workers who process animal hair, and scientists working with anthrax samples.

U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases HEALTH LIBRARY All about Anthrax Health Library WASHINGTON (CNN) The FBI began draining a one-acre pond Monday in Frederick, Maryland, searching for evidence in the deadly 2001 anthrax attacks, the FBI and a city spokeswoman said. FBI agents have returned to the site several times since the winter as part of their investigation. "Based on extensive environmental testing already conducted, there is no indication of any threat to public health or safety associated with our search activities," said an FBI statement released Monday. Some investigators said they believe the person behind the attacks might have dumped materials into the pond in the city's scenic Frederick Municipal Forest. There is also a theory the anthrax mailer might have packed the anthrax spores into envelopes under water.

The Biology
Anthrax
Botulism
Anthrax and botulism are not significant biological weapons. They are promoted for disinformation purposes.
The public is being propagandized on biological weapons, because some persons in the dark cellars of government are trying to get public support for an anti-terrorist campaign including increased police powers. Journalists and bureaucrats run wild with their imaginations, because they do not have a clue as to the biology of the subject. The reason why the diseases in question are not significant biological weapons is because they cannot be gotten into humans in significant quantities. The question is environmental conditions and delivery systems. Diseases are so specialized and demanding in their requirements that they will not do something beyond which they normally do. Therefore, the whole concept of bioweapons is unrealistic—that is, as military style weapons. However, militaries are researching contagious diseases, which is where the real problem is. A lot of experts describe the pathology of anthrax as if it were an imminent peril. The pathology doesn't tell us whether Iraq or terrorists can weaponize the spores. They can't. Iraq uses anthrax in liquid form, which is totally ineffective.

FBI giving polygraph tests in anthrax probe
Five people died in last fall's anthrax scare, but no arrests have been made. From Kelli Arena and Carol Cratty CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The FBI is asking key scientists involved in the anthrax investigation to take polygraph tests, federal officials said Friday. The voluntary exams, which gauge the subject's truthfulness, mark authorities latest attempt to find out who mailed anthrax-laced letters to journalists and politicians last fall. "We haven't ruled anyone out as a suspect," an FBI official said Friday. As part of its investigation, the FBI is looking into the possibility that the person behind the anthrax attacks may have ties to a government lab. Complete coverage Authorities have narrowed the number of facilities believed to be capable of making the deadly spores to about 24 labs. But no charges have been filed against anyone thought to be involved in the anthrax mailings, which killed five people and infected 13 others.

Anthrax scare in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) Authorities are investigating the possibility that a white powder inside a letter opened Monday in the Thomas Eagleton Federal Building in downtown St. Louis might be anthrax. Complete coverage "We ran a task force over there for an anthrax scare," said Fire Department Captain Bob Hennicke. The letter, whose postmark indicated it had been sent from out of state, was opened at 1 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) in the building's central mail location, said Don Hines, chief of public affairs for the U.S. Marshals Service in Washington. "Emergency protocols went into effect; the appropriate agencies were notified: haz-mat, fire, public health," he said. "They're on the scene right now conducting an investigation." Four people all mailroom staff were in the area where the letter was opened, he said.

Source: Mailed anthrax was not old
From Kelli Arena CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) A senior government official who wished not to be identified told CNN Saturday that testing has determined the deadly anthrax mailed to various places last fall was no more than two years old. This discovery lends credence to the theory that whoever mailed the finely milled anthrax spores known to be of the Ames strain has a current connection to a sophisticated laboratory. EXTRA INFORMATION In-Depth: Anthrax Investigators have long believed the suspect possessed a sophisticated knowledge of anthrax and a high level of training. Currently, many scientists who are knowledgeable about anthrax are taking polygraph tests and undergoing interviews as investigators try to uncover suspects. Still, investigators say they are far from solving the mystery of who sent the deadly spores.
