Anosmia
Anosmia is the lack of olfaction , or a loss of the sense of smell. It can be either temporary or permanent. A temporary loss of smell can be caused by a stuffy nose while a permanent loss of smell may be caused by death of olfactory cells in the nose, or brain injury in which there is damage to the olfactory nerve or damage to the part of the frontal lobes of brain itself that detect and process smell.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Anosmia is the lack of olfaction Olfaction , the sense of smell, is the detection of chemicals dissolved in air (or, by animals that breathe water, in water). In vertebrates it is located in the nose. The importance and sensitivity of smell varies among different organisms: most mammals have a good sense of smell, whereas most birds don't. Among birds, it is important in the tubenoses. Among mammals it is well developed in the carnivores and ungulates, who must always be aware of each other, and in those, such as moles, who smell for their food. It is less well developed in the catarrhine primates (Catarrhini), and nonexistent in cetaceans, who in compensation have a sensitive and well-developed sense of taste. The lack of olfaction is called anosmia.

Consumers using Zicam Cold Remedy have reported anosmia, or a loss of smell. Although Zicam has an entire line of cold remedy products, the only one that has so far been linked to anosmia is the nasal gel or swabs, which are applied directly to nose. Zicam's maker continues to deny a link between its cold remedy product and anosmia, and issued a statement reaffirming the safety of intranasal Zicam Cold Remedy. According to reports, some consumers have experienced anosmia after using Zicam just once. The cases are all similar in description and the majority of the anosmia sufferers have not regained function. In the 1930s, zinc compounds were used in attempts to prevent polio. In around 10% of the people that had received the zinc compounds, anosmia was suffered permanently. While Zicam manufacturer Matrixx Initiatives says there is a significant difference in that Zicam contains zinc gluconate and not zinc sulfate as in the polio uses, consumers and lawyers are arguing differently. So far, four lawsuits have been filed against Zicam's maker because of anosmia complaints. The FDA is investigating the consumer anosmia complaints and has a hot line to accept any more complaints regarding Zicam. Matrixx has said that, "statements alleging that intranasal Zicam products cause anosmia (loss of smell) are completely unfounded and misleading." Zicam is a popular homeopathic cold remedy that is sold over the counter and advertised nationwide. There have been reports of anosmia in another popular zinc gluconate containing nasal spray, but most of the anosmia reports have been in response to Zicam use.

Definition
The term anosmia means lack of the sense of smell. It may also refer to a decreased sense of smell. Ageusia, a companion word, refers to a lack of taste sensation. Patients who actually have anosmia may complain wrongly of ageusia, although they retain the ability to distinguish salt, sweet, sour, and bitterhumans' only taste sensations. Description
Of the five senses, smell ranks fourth in importance for humans, although it is much more pronounced in other animals. Bloodhounds, for example, can smell an odor a thousand times weaker than humans. Taste, considered the fifth sense, is mostly the smell of food in the mouth. The sense of smell originates from the first cranial nerves (the olfactory nerves), which sit at the base of the brain's frontal lobes, right behind the eyes and above the nose. Inhaled airborne chemicals stimulate these nerves. There are other aberrations of smell beside a decrease. Smells can be distorted, intensified, or hallucinated. These changes usually indicate a malfunction of the brain.
The most common cause of anosmia is nasal occlusion caused by rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal membranes). If no air gets to the olfactory nerves, smell will not happen. In turn, rhinitis and

- Anosmia - 6/29/00 re: Do any nutritional supplements help anosmia Please advise if you know any nutritional supplements for anosmia (lack of smell) other than the traditional one of zinc supplements. 6/1/98 re: anosmia A 38-yr. old male, non-smoker has been suffering from mild to moderate degree of loss of smell for the past 7-8 years and feels that now there is almost complete anosmia. This is associated with heaviness of the head, stuffiness of the nose and lack of concentration. On X- Ray (OM view ) there is no deviation of the septum...PNS are clear except a mild ethmoiditis.
I had prescribed antihistaminics, nasal decongestants and a nasal steroid spray with a hope to relieve the possible edema of the olfactory region. However even after two months although the nasal stuffiness is better, the sense of smell has not improved. The patient has, however, developed tinnitus for which I have prescribed cinnarizine.
Please advise me regarding the possible cause and the future course of action that I must take.

It can be classified as: central (lesion of the olfactory receptor, olfactory bulb or tract, or related parts of the central nervous system); peripheral (interference of access of odorants to the olfactory receptors by obstruction of the nasal cavities); reflex (disease in some other part of the body); and functional (no apparent causal lesion). Imaging techniques, such as CT and MRI, may be useful in the mapping and differential diagnosis of lesions causing central or peripheral olfactory disturbance. Common causes of peripheral olfactory disturbance are sinonasal inflammation and sinonasal tumours. Central olfactory disturbance may be secondary to head trauma (by shearing of olfactory filaments as they go through the cribriforme plate, or by contusion of the cerebral cortex, particularly the frontal and temporal lobe); Kallmanns syndrome is the most common entity causing congenital anosmia. Anosmia is also present in various degenerative neuropsychiatric disorders, and it is sometimes encountered in AIDS patients and rarely in patients with brain tumours.
