Ask the Mayo Physician - Aneurysms in the extremities
FROM Q. What is a peripheral aneurysm? Lauren / Mo. A An aneurysm is a localized swelling of a blood vessel, most often an artery. An aneurysm is formed when a weakened wall of an artery is stretched as the blood flows through it, often creating an egg-shaped sac. Aneurysms can occur in any blood vessel, but are most common in the aorta (the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart). Peripheral aneurysm 2.6 MB

An aortic aneurysm is the dilatation (widening or bulge) of a portion of the aorta, usually at a weak spot in the aortic wall. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It carries all the blood that is pumped out of the heart and distributes it, via its many branches, to all the organs of the body. The aorta projects upwards from the heart in the chest and then arches downwards, travelling through the chest (the thoracic aorta) and into the abdomen (the abdominal aorta). The normal diameter of the abdominal aorta is about one inch. What causes an aortic aneurysm and who is at risk? Most aortic aneurysms occur in the abdominal aorta, the main cause being arteriosclerosis. This is a condition in which fatty deposits are laid down in the walls of arteries, which are less elastic and weaker as a result. Major risk factors for arteriosclerosis are smoking and high blood pressure, although it also probably runs in families.

Backtracking a bit, it is important to get an instant education on the Brain Attack. Some basic questions What is a brain aneurysm? Etc. Etc. The aneurysm.
http://www.brain-surgery.com/aneurysm.html
A Stroke is the ultimate "Brain Attack." It can strike the young, healthy, productive head of a household during a soft, shared moment with a spouse anytime. Nothing is more frightening. One might hear: "I'm having the worst headache of my life!" Or, "Oh, my neck is so stiff!" Then the victim might vomit, perhaps have a convulsion which could leave them comatose and all bystanders truly frightened. In the emergency room even the doctors look worried. The CAT scan shows "blood around the brain," something doctors call a "subarachnoid hemorrhage." There could possibly be other problems, such as a blot clot in the brain itself ("intracerebral hemorrhage) and/or something called "hydrocephalus" (water on the brain, building up after blood cells have gradually clogged, the brain's drainage system). There is lots to be done, and in a very short time frame. Backtracking a bit, it is important to get an instant education on the "Brain Attack."
Some basic questions:
  • What is a brain aneurysm?
  • How serious is the problem?

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
What is an aneurysm?
An aneurysm is an area of a localized widening (dilation) of a blood vessel. (The word "aneurysm" is borrowed from the Greek "aneurysma" meaning "a widening"). What is an aortic aneurysm?
An aortic aneurysm involves the aorta, one of the large arteries that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The aorta bulges at the site of the aneurysm like a weak spot on an old worn tire. What are the thoracic and abdominal aorta?
The aorta is first called the thoracic aorta as it leaves the heart, ascends, arches, and descends through the chest until it reaches the diaphragm (the partition between the thorax and abdomen). The aorta is then called the abdominal aorta after it has passed the diaphragm and continues down the abdomen. The abdominal aorta ends where it splits to form the two iliac arteries that go to the legs. Where do aortic aneurysms tend to develop?

Brain Aneurysm
What is a brain aneurysm?
A brain aneurysm is an abnormal widening of an artery or vein in the brain. Brain aneurysms are caused by a weakness in the wall of an artery or vein within the brain. How does a brain aneurysm occur?
Brain aneurysms may result from a congenital malformation (birth defect) of a blood vessel, high blood pressure which damages the blood vessels, arteriosclerosis (build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries), or head trauma. Who is at risk for a brain aneurysm?
Brain aneurysms can occur at any age. Although they are more common in adults, they can and do occur in children. Is there any warning before an aneurysm ruptures?
The onset of bleeding from a ruptured brain aneurysm is usually sudden and without warning. Sometimes, however, the individual may experience the sudden onset of symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, vision impairment, vomiting, and loss of consciousness before the aneurysm ruptures.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Low Back Pain
Norman Engel, MS, DC, DABCO An aneurysm, by definition, is a sac formed by the dilatation of the wall of an artery, a vein or the heart. The chief signs of an arterial aneurysm are the formation of a pulsating tumor and often a bruit is heard over the swelling. Sometimes there are symptoms from pressure on contiguous parts. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It arises from the left ventricle, ascending and bending over the heart, descending anteriorly to the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It splits at L-4 into the common iliacs, femorals, tibials, and dorsalis pedis arteries, supplying the lower extremities. The average diameter of aorta is 2.0-2.5 cm. More than 90 percent of abdominal aneurysms are associated with atherosclerosis and can cause leg pain (claudication), numbness or fatigue. An artery may be sclerosed (hardened) but if the lumenal diameter isn't altered, there is no aneurysm. Most abdominal aortic aneurysms do not produce symptoms, but some people feel a pulsating sensation in the abdomen. These silent (asymptomatic) aneurysms are often recognized by careful physical examination. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is most likely to occur in people older than 60 years, and it affects men more often than women.
