Anencephaly is a condition present at birth that affects the formation of the brain and the skull bones that surround the head. Anencephaly results in only minimal development of the brain. Often, the brain lacks part or all of the cerebrum (the area of the brain that is responsible for thinking, vision, hearing, touch, and movement). There is no bony covering over the back of the head and there may also be missing bones around the front and sides of the head. What causes anencephaly?

National Organization for Rare Disorders

Anencephaly is characterized by the absence of the two hemispheres of the brain. The absent brain tissue is sometimes replaced by abnormal cystic nerve tissue, which may be either exposed or covered with skin. Additionally, varying portions of the brainstem and spinal cord may be missing or malformed.
(as defined by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH
Anencephaly is a neural tube defect that occurs when the cephalic (head) end of the neural tube fails to close, usually between the 23 rd and 26 th Infants born with anencephaly are usually blind, deaf, unconscious, and unable to feel pain. Although some individuals with anencephaly may be born with a rudimentary brainstem, the lack of a functioning cerebrum permanently rules out the possibility of ever gaining consciousness. Reflex actions such as respiration (breathing) and responses to sound or touch may occur. The disorder is one of the most common disorders of the fetal central nervous system. Approximately 1,000 to 2,000 American babies are born with anencephaly each year. The disorder affects females more often than males.

DISORDERS GLOSSARY Cephalic Disorders
(as defined at
http://www.neurologychannel.com/cephalicdisorders/
Overview
The term cephalic disorders refers to defects resulting from abnormal development of, or damage to, the brain and spinal cord. Cephalic disorders are present at or before birth. In most cases, the problem occurs early in the development of the fetal nervous system. In other cases, the problem occurs when the fibrous joints connecting the bones of the skull join prematurely.
Cephalic disorders may be caused by genetic conditions or by exposure of the mother and developing fetus to infections, toxic substances, medications, or radiation.
The severity of these disorders varies greatly. Some cause mild disabilities; others are profound, resulting in total lifelong disability, vastly reduced functional capacity, and sometimes death. Return to Contents (as defined by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH

I just found out yesterday. The specialist said it was a common condition, I have never heard of it tho.
I am curious for those who are or have been going thru this same experience, what caused it?
I have not yet talked to my doc but we will be doing the amnio before termination. I was told stuff about chromosonal problems, spinal defects, and lack of folic acid. I am praying that mine was a result of the low folic acid and I can try again later this year.
How long do you have to wait? I was told I need to be on extra folic acid for 3 months. I also have PCO so I need to take Metformin for atleast 3 months as well.

Disease - Anencephaly
Ultrasound, normal fetus - ventricles of brain Definition: Anencephaly is the absence of a large part of the brain and the skull. Alternative Names: Aprosencephaly with open cranium Causes And Risk: Anencephaly is a neural tube defect that occurs early in the development of an unborn baby. Neural tube defects involve the tissue that grows into the brain and spinal cord. Anencephaly results when the upper portion of the neural tube fails to close. Why this happens is not known. Possible causes include environmental toxins and low intake of folic acid during pregnancy. Anencephaly occurs in about 4 out of 10,000 births. The exact number is unknown, because many of these pregnancies spontaneously abort. Having one anencephalic infant increases the risk of having another child with neural tube defects. Low intake of folic acid during pregnancy can also contribute to neural tube defects such as anencephaly.

Anencephaly is a birth defect that occurs before the 26th day of pregnancy. It is a condition in which the embryo develops without the upper portion of its skull. These embryos sometimes continue to develop into the fetal stage
and may even survive to be born alive, but with upper cranium and scalp missing and the brain open to the outer world. The condition is always fatal, however these babies may survive outside the womb anywhere between minutes and weeks.
Anencephaly occurs when the "cephalic" or head end of the neural tube fails to close, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp. The neural tube is a narrow sheath that folds and closes between the 3rd and
4th weeks of pregnancy to form the brain and spinal cord of the embryo.
Causes
There is evidence that some cases involve genetics, some environmental factors, but others are clearly impossible to define at this time. Anencephaly has been related to low levels of folic acid, obesity, hypervitaminosis A (a condition caused by taking too much vitamin A) and having previous infants with neural tube defects. Although it is believed that the mother's diet and vitamin intake may play a role, scientists believe that many other factors are also involved. For now the cause of anencephaly is classified as 'unknown'.
