In addition to dysphonia, swallowing function is also disrupted. This paper reviews what is known about laryngeal dysfunction resulting from ALS. Results Presented is a case report of a female, diagnosed with ALS, whose initial symptoms were caused by laryngeal bulbar involvement that was characterized by dysphonia and dysphagia.

What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease of the nervous system. The cause is not known and there is no cure, although progress is being made on both fronts. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease after the famous baseball player who died from it. ALS attacks motor neurons, which are among the largest of all nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. These cells send messages to muscles throughout the body. In ALS, motor neurons die and the muscles do not receive these messages. As a result, muscles weaken as they lose their ability to move. Eventually, most muscle action is affected, including those which control swallowing and breathing, as well as major muscles in the arms, legs, back and neck. There is, however, no loss of sensory nerves, so people with ALS retain their sense of feeling

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive, fatal neurological disease affecting as many as 20,000 Americans with 5,000 new cases occurring in the United States each year. The disorder belongs to a class of disorders known as motor neuron diseases. ALS occurs when specific nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary movement gradually degenerate. The loss of these motor neurons causes the muscles under their control to weaken and waste away, leading to paralysis. ALS manifests itself in different ways, depending on which muscles weaken first. Symptoms may include tripping and falling, loss of motor control in hands and arms, difficulty speaking, swallowing and/or breathing, persistent fatigue, and twitching and cramping, sometimes quite severely. ALS strikes in mid-life. Men are about one-and-a-half times more likely to have the disease as women.

What is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive wasting away of certain nerve cells of the brain and spinal column called motor neurons. The motor neurons control the voluntary muscles, which are the muscles that allow movement. ALS is a progressive, disabling disease. Walking, speaking, eating, swallowing, breathing, and other basic functions become more difficult with time. These problems can lead to injury, illness, and other complications. In the United States and most other parts of the world, 1 to 2 people per 100,000 develop ALS each year. Men are affected slightly more often than women. Although ALS may occur at any age, it is most common in middle-aged and older adults.

MND is the term used internationally whilst ALS is often used in the USA (where it is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease ) to cover all forms of MND. Overview
The disorder is characterized by the progressive loss of voluntary muscle contraction due to the destruction of nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord that are responsible for the stimulation of the voluntary muscles The muscles are simply stimulated by a group of neurons located on the frontal portion of the spinal cord projecting to the muscle cells ( second motor neurons ) and these nerve cells are stimulated by a group of nerve cells that project from a specific region called the motor area, located on the

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Definition: A disease of the motor nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing progressive loss of motor control.
Alternative Names: Lou Gehrig's disease; ALS
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is caused by progressive loss of motor nerves in the spinal cord and brain. In about 10% of cases, ALS is caused by a genetic defect. In other cases, the cause of the nerve deterioration is unknown. ALS affects approximately 1 out of 100,000 people. Except for having a family member affected with the hereditary form of the disease, there are no known risk factors.

Feedback National Registry of Veterans with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis A National VA Initiative (DVA Cooperative Study #500A) The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is developing a nationwide registry of living veterans who have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This effort is directed by the Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC) at the VA Medical Center in Durham, NC, with cooperation from the VA Medical Center in Lexington, KY. The ALS Association (ALSA) is advising the study leaders. All living veterans who have been diagnosed with ALS are encouraged to participate in this research registry. What is ALS? ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the brain cells that control muscle movement. As these cells die, the affected muscles weaken and then shrink, leading to progressive paralysis. There are no known cures for this disease. ALS is a non-contagious, adult-onset disease and is rare among individuals under 45 years of age. What is the purpose of this registry?
