New York, NY, May. 8 (UPI) A double amputee in a wheelchair has been charged with the rape and assault of an elderly woman who was also a patient in a New York City nursing home. The New York Times reports that Samuel Irving, 43, was arrested early Saturday after a nurse found him lying on top of the 78-year-old woman and slapping her. Irving had reportedly been homeless before he entered the Greenpark Care Center in Brooklyn about a year ago and had a criminal record that included arrests for robbery and on drug charges. But an administrator told the Times that he had been "a model patient" during his time at the nursing home. The victim was hospitalized with a fractured eye socket and other injuries after the Friday night attack. Body Image: The Lower-Limb Amputee
James W. Breakey, PhD, CP
ABSTRACT
A 110-item survey was sent to lower-limb amputees to examine their self-perception and psychosocial well-being. The subjects (N = 90) were male unilateral, traumatic, lower-limb amputees. The author used an amputee body-image scale (ABIS) to measure each amputee's perception of his body image. Data obtained from the ABIS were used to determine correlations with the other assessment scales. Findings indicated significant positive correlations between body image and self-esteem, anxiety and depression. This suggested an amputee's evaluation of his or her body image can influence these variables in either a positive or negative manner. A significant correlation also was found between body image and life satisfaction, indicating the more negative an amputee feels about his or her body image, the less satisfied he or she is with his or her life. Results of this study support the hypothesis that a relationship exists in lower-limb amputees between their perception of their body image and their psychosocial well-being. In fact, the significant correlations tend to support other studies in which physical disability was found to increase a person's tendency toward anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and less satisfaction with life.

A life story of a diabetic amputee. How and why diabetic foot problems developed and eventual amputation. How I could prevent diabetic amputation.
http://www.geocities.com/aapeal
Amputation  in Diabetes. Well, If you think it could not happen to you, think again and read my story.
I have been diabetic for over 11 years. I have never thought and imagined how
diabetics could lose the leg. As long as I take good care of myself and see the doctor
regularly how I could possibly get into the situation I am at now?
How Did It Happen to Me?
Some time ago, I developed feelings of tingling, burning, numbing and needlesensations in my feet. Doctors told me "It's your diabetes!". I asked what I should do about it. "Well, be careful" my doctor told me. Is it OK to wear these shoes? Is it OK with a calluse at the bottom of my feet? What about my toenails? I never got straight answers and no one seemed to know or have clear knowledge until I developed a blister from a new pair of shoes I bought and wore for several hours. The blister gave me so much trouble for almost two years. Exactly two years since I developed a small blister, my leg was amputated. Can you believe a little blister cost me my leg?
Educate Yourself If You Are Diabetic
I have found many educational resources on the web since my mishap. Could I have prevented amputation? I think so. When I had developed foot ulcer from the blister, why my doctor never bother to check the bone under the ulcer was infected? When I got a second opinion the second doctor's first concern was a bone infection. When he ordered MRI of my foot then they finally realized my bones were mangled from infection which had to be present several months. Why my doctor never bother to refer me to a foot specialist?

Persons with amputations face a major challenge to maintain independence and function after enduring the loss of a limb and its complications. To optimally meet these rehabilitation challenges, Johns Hopkins Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has assembled an interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation professional physiatrists (rehabilitation physicians), physical therapists, orthotists, prosthetists, and nurses who work together to manage the unique needs of amputee patients. Inpatient services. Rehabilitation begins immediately after amputation occurs (or, if amputation surgery is elective, even beforehand). Patients are educated on what to expect in terms of pain, recovery, and ultimate functional status. In the immediate postoperative period, prevention of contractures and deconditioning, along with edema control, are of major importance. Team members may provide recommendations regarding positioning, dressings, and wound management. Patients begin physical and occupational therapy within 48 hours of surgery. Individuals requiring intensive postoperative rehabilitation may be admitted to our comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation facilities at Good Samaritan Hospital or Johns Hopkins Hospital . While in the hospital, efforts focus on optimal wound healing, maintenance and increase of strength and range of motion, and preparation of the residual limb for prosthetic wear.
