My leg was twisted and very dirty
RIGHTS
April 2000 -I could not believe that I would be playing my favorite game ever again on my "wooden leg." -When I came the first day for the first practice, some of them couldn't skate at all. They were holding the boards, says Elks' coach Nikolay Maslov. Now his biggest problem is to keep his players from checking too hard. An interesting event happened in Boston, MA, December '99. It never made front pages of the newspapers or news broadcasts in the US, but it got a great cheer from the audience at Tsongas Arena, Lowell, during the half-time at the University of Massachusetts / Lowell vs. the University of New Hampshire hockey game on Saturday, December 4, 1999. A 5 minutes long exhibition game took place between American hockey veterans and a group of veterans of another type - a team of disabled Russian war veterans, who lost lower limbs to a land mine or a sniper shot during the most recent military conflicts. Alexey Balakhontsev, who lost his limb in Afghanistan in 1985, told us, that in June of 1998 he was invited to the US to take part in the First International Conference held at the International Institute of the Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Land Mine Survivors (IPRLS) at New England Sinai Hospital.

Tun Channareth

Tun Channareth's speech was spoken at a simultaneous gathering in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in Khmer.
Parts of it were given at various events related to the Nobel award.
Amputee Ambassador Tun Channareth
Some people call me a 'landmine victim'. So I am. So are you in a different way. You can see I carry in my body the injury caused by landmines. Forty thousand people look like me. Many, many more have lost arms or eyes or one leg. Many too still carry pieces of shrapnel in their bodies causing them suffering and new medical expenses for years. Others carry the ejmotional scars, the memory of loved ones killed, the sense of being useless, no good, maimed.
I speak for them all when, once again, I recall the words written in 1994 by four of us, all handicapped by landmines:
"Before we were soldiers of four rival armies that laid mines that blew the legs and arms off one another. Nowe we live and work in the Centre of the Dove.
  • We beg the world to stop making mines We beg the world to stop laying mines We beg the world to give money for demining and development so that we can rebuild our lives, our communities, our villages and our countries again! "

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) It's the corpses and not the medical examiner's crutch that get attention on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." That's just the way Robert David Hall, who plays Dr. Al Robbins, likes it. Hall, a double amputee fitted with prosthetic legs, wants to see more disabled characters on-screen as a matter-of-fact part of life. He compares casting the disabled in television and movies to using a 64-crayon box instead of one with a fraction of the choices. "To me, it's always much better to paint with a wider palette. And it's more truthful, too," he said. The actor, 55, joined TV's top-rated series early in its first season in 2000 and has been a regular since. "I told them (the producers) right from the get-go, 'I'm not going to play your ghoulish guy.' I want to be a guy who has respect for and sees death as part of life, and that's what they were looking for."

Trudeau is not the only comic-strip artist using the war in Iraq as a backdrop. In Monday's edition of "Get Fuzzy," main character Rob Wilco learned that a cousin had lost a leg in the war.
(AP)
A main character in the "Doonesbury" comic strip will lose a leg while fighting in Iraq, one of two strips published this week that feature soldiers getting injured in the war.
In Monday's "Doonesbury," B.D., a football coach-turned-soldier, was injured after being reactivated in the Army at the end of 2002, following a losing football season.
Later this week, he will wake up to find his left leg amputated, according to Universal Press Syndicate, the strip's distributor.
About 10 newspapers have called Universal Press with concerns about the strip, primarily with language the character uses after learning his leg is gone, company spokeswoman Kathie Kerr said. The strip, which appears in 1,400 newspapers nationwide, has a long history of addressing difficult topics since Garry Trudeau started it at Yale University in 1968.

Amputee athlete: 'I just tried to stay positive'
Neil Parry: "Being down, you know, that's not going to get me anywhere." Story Tools RELATED Amputee ready for comeback (CNN) Neil Parry achieved his dream when he became a walk-on for the San Jose State Spartans football team. But during a game in his second year, he broke his leg in two places. Infection set in, and his leg was amputated. Twenty-five surgeries, 15 prosthetic legs and untold hours of painful rehabilitation later, Parry returned to the gridiron. He spoke with CNN anchor Paula Zahn the following day. ZAHN: Neil, tell us a little bit about the feeling once you got out there on the field for the first time in three years. PARRY: Well, just being out there, being out there with the team warming up, you know, it's just a different feeling than going out and just watching the game. So I was excited to be with the team again, you know, just knowing I was going to get in the game was it was overwhelming. ZAHN: I've got to tell you, I'm looking at these pictures and I'm looking at your speed and I'm looking at your agility, and it seems almost like a miracle you can do what you're doing today.
