21. American Amputee Soccer Assn. - Rules
4 v 4 amputee Soccer is a great game for rehab, recreation, and for competition. Offside Offside rules does not apply in amputee soccer.
http://www.ampsoccer.org/rules.htm
4 v 4 Amputee Soccer is a great game for rehab, recreation, and for competition. The 4 v 4 game is especially adapted for the development of local teams.
The overall philosophy of the 4 v 4 game is to include all amps and "Les Autres" (individuals with birth defects) who want to play.
If there are too few amputees to form a team in a specific area to form an "all amp" team, there are exceptions to the basic rules which will allow teams to be formed.
The Rules: amputee soccer is basically the same as the two-legged version, with some minor adaptations:
General Rules:
  • An amputee is defined as one who is "abbreviated" at or proximal to the wrist or ankle.
  • The game is co-ed. Male and female players are permitted on the same team.
  • Outfielders may have two hands but only one foot. Goalies may have two legs, but only one hand.
Exceptions: As stated above the overall objective of 4 v 4 Amputee Soccer is to allow everyone to play who wants to play.
Therefore "able bodied" players may fill in a short roster under the following conditions:
a: Amputee and "Les Autres" players have priority.

elcome to the Amputee Cycling Association . The summer of 2003 found me spreading a message of awareness and hope as I cycled coast to coast, 3800 miles across America. The end of that journey only beckoned the beginning of many more journeys for myself and other amputee cycling enthusiasts. "Life does not end with the loss of a limb" is the message of hope that many amputees can realize from this organization. On these pages you will meet ordinary people doing amazing things. Each of them has been drawn to the freedom and independence that cycling gives. I will continue to add links and information for the amputee cyclist on this website. If you would like to be included please contact me . Your input and suggestions are welcome. Ride on!

Chris,
Please be advised that the New Maryland Lions Club has forwarded a donation in the amount of $250.00 to the Canadian Amputee Sports Association on your behalf. We hope the funds will assist you in the cost of your upcoming trip to the Czech Republic and wish you the best of luck on the ice.
I was pleased to hear of your success on a personal note - my nephew is an amputee. He is only 6 years old and has 2 artificial legs. He has been learning to skate for the past two winters with some success. He still has quite a difficult time with his balance. He is active in Karate and Beavers
and is the busiest 6 year old I know. His support from the War Amps CHAMP program has made a huge difference in his self-esteem, so I understand to a very small degree how beneficial your participation on the Hockey Team must
be to you.

"The Changing Role of the Amputee in the Rehabilitation Process" Alvin C. Pike, C.P.* - LeRoy Wm. Nattress, Jr., M.A.** As we approach the twenty-first century it is apparent that each of us must become better informed more responsible consumers of the goods and services provided at all levels and in every sector of the economy including health care. It is clear that we must participate in the decisions that affect the quality of our lives. To better understand the changing role of the amputee in the rehabilitation process we need to review the history of prosthetics, prosthetic research, and amputee rehabilitation in this country and determine how each has influenced present services and techniques, as well as to look at what we might expect in the future. Prior to our Civil War there were few artificial limb companies in the United States. Most individuals who were unfortunate enough to loose a limb either made do without the missing extremity or fashioned something that would work for them. Emphasis was placed on being able to work and earn a living or take care of a family. There were no welfare programs, only handouts from churches or rich benefactors. A number of limb companies did come into existence following the Civil War. Most were started by amputee veterans who had made limbs for themselves or improved on the limbs provided to them and sort of fell into the business when asked to make similar limbs for other amputees. One of the best known of these is the J.E. Hanger Company. Mr. Hanger, an engineering student serving in the Confederate Army, lost his leg to a rifle ball shortly after the war started. Dissatisfied with the appliance provided him to replace his amputated leg he set about to improve the function of his artificial leg. The leg he developed was such an improvement over what was available that in 1861 he was able to found a company, which bears his name today, and obtain an exclusive contract to provide limbs to confederate amputee veterans. We continue to find examples of this kind of spirit among amputees today.

Information Source for Amputees and Support Group Leaders Director Richard L. Mooney New Additions May 29, 2003 ARC is an outgrowth of the Western Amputee Support Alliance (WASA). The WASA website was established In October, 1997, as a place to post written information of interest to people with amputations, and referrals to amputee support groups in the Western United States. Recently, the Directors decided to limit the WASA website to Western U. S. support group referrals only and to establish the ARC website as a place where expanded written information and other resources for people with amputations and support group leaders could be posted.
Mission
ARC's goals are to:
  • provide information about starting and maintaining a peer support program,
  • feature materials that support group leaders could use to educate themselves about the "care and feeding" of a support group,
  • provide information and topics that might be shared with their members at meetings, in newsletters, or as information sheets,
  • provide a book list to help support groups build their libraries
