At Home With Alzheimers Disease
Safety and Security
To protect the safety of people with Alzheimer's Disease in and around the home, and to ensure that they do not wander away and get lost or come to harm, the following precautions are suggested.
Safety Precautions in the Bathroom
Keep pills out of reach, locked in a cupboard away from the bathroom (for example, in the pantry) or locked in the medicine cabinet. Install a grab bar by both toilet and tub (or clamp a grip handle to side of tub).
Reinforce a grab bar by both toilet and tub (a grab bar is better).
Purchase a plasticized seat and a shower hose for bathing the AD person seated. Slip-proof the bottom of the tub or use rubber mat.
Keep shampoo and other liquids out of the bathroom so that they cannot be swallowed.

Caring for Parents with Alzheimers
Berkeley Parents Network Advice Elders > Caring for Parents with Alzheimers June 2002 My mother was recently diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's. I'm wondering if anyone else is sharing this experience? If so, what books have you found useful? How does one explain this to a four-year-old? It's not bad yet, but I worry that as we talk about it, he'll need to know something about what we are worried about. Also, I'm just wondering if anyone is up-to-date about the research around the disease, or can share their experiences with any aspect of this. Thanks Julie As for your four-year old, he'll observe and make his own sense of it. I'd treat it like any tough subject, in the beginning tell him something simple like, ''Grandma has a sickness that makes her forget things,'' and let his questions guide you from there. Just be honest and tell him what he wants to know. He'll probably only absorb as much of the discussion and emotion going on as he can handle, kids have a great self-protection mechanism that way. Feel free to contact me if you would like to talk. Marilyn The local Alzheimers Association was a lifesaver when my father was found to have Alzheimer's. The people who donate their time to facilitate the discussion groups have family members with Alzheimers themselves, and guide the talk in supportive directions with specific helpful suggestions. (Call 800-660-1993 to locate a group near you.) Also check out Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter, a wonderful (and funny!) film by Deborah Hoffmann about her mother's descent into Alzheimers http://www.pbs.org/pov/films/com.html Merry

Neuroautoimmunity: Pathogenic Implications for Alzheimer’s Disease Gerontology , vol. 43, no.s 1-2, 1997, pp. 79-94. Immune factors such as cellular immunity, autoimmunity, and inflammation may play a pathogenic role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder. Based on immunologic dysregulation in many patients, a neuroautoimmunity model is proposed… Antibrain antibodies may contribute through a cell-specific immune assault leading to neurodegeneration of the AD type. Thus, a cell-mediated autoimmune response against brain antigens may explain the immune subset of AD. Circulating Cytokines in Alzheimer’s Disease Journal of Psychiatric Research , vol. 31, no. 6, Nov.-Dec. 1997, pp. 657-60. The level of IL-6 cytokines, but not other cytokines, was significantly elevated in Alzheimer’s patients, indicating immune activation presumably related to pathophysiology of the disease. Immune-activation Model in Alzheimer['s] Disease Molecular Chemistry and Neuropathology , vol. 28, no.s 1-3, May-Aug. 1996, pp. 105-11. The activation of immunoregulatory T-lymphocytes with CD8 phenotype may be important in the immunopathogenesis of the disease.
