Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. Dementia is a loss of intellectual functions (such as thinking, remembering and reasoning) so severe that it interferes with an individual's daily functioning and eventually results in death. Alzheimer's is the fourth leading cause of death in adults, after heart disease, cancer and stroke. Men and women are affected almost equally. The disease was first described by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906. Since then, researchers have developed a deeper understanding of the changes in the brain (plaques and tangles) and behavioral changes that characterize the disease. Identified risk factors are age and family history. Most people diagnosed with Alzheimer's are older than age 65; however, Alzheimer's disease can occur in people in their 40s and 50s. Symptoms Symptoms of AD can include gradual memory loss, decline in the ability to perform routine tasks, disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss of language skills, impairment of judgment and planning and personality changes. The rate of progression varies from person to person. The time from the onset of symptoms until death averages at 8 years, but can range from 3 to 20 years. Eventually persons with AD become totally incapable of caring for themselves.

Demens varar flera månader eller år och startar ofta smygande. Den kan utvecklas när som helst under livet, men debuterar oftast i hög ålder (seniet). Av praktiska skäl har man indelat demenssjukdomarna i två huvudgrupper, beroende på när de första symptomen kan påvisas. Vid start före 65 års ålder används beteckningen "presenil demens" och om debuten sker därefter talar man om "senil demens". I read every web page, every book and every article written on dementia or Alzheimers. I became a walking reference book on this terrible disease. Friends learned to avoid mentioning my mother or Alzheimer's as I would launch into an eye glazing monologue of statistics, but after all the facts were read and digested, I was left with the undeniable facts. My mother had a progressive, degenerative disease that would rob her of her memory and dignity and would ultimately lead to her death. There was no cure. There was no hope. That was five years ago, and I found that although scientific information is important in understanding this illness, it doesn't help the caretaker in the day to day job of caring for their loved ones. I found that what I needed was practical information. Information that could only come from other caretakers who had, "been there and done that." ALFS assisted Living Facilities My mother had been living with my widowed brother for the last three years but as he started declining from colon cancer, it became imperative that I find another place for her. Since we lived on a canal and were only a half block from a major highway, I was always a nervous wreck even when she visited as she was always trying to get "home." So, reluctantly, I concluded that the safest and best place was a "home." Since mother was continent and able to dress and feed herself, an Assisted Living Facility, ALF, was the best choice. I found one that I felt was above average. It was just two years old and the attendants seemed warm and caring and it had an Alzheimer's wing. I moved mother in at the end of March, 2002 and she is still there, February 2004.
