These results indicate that morning bright light is a powerful synchroniser that can normalise disturbed sleep and substantially reduce the frequency of behaviour disorders in elderly people with dementia.

Facts, Disease Prevention and Treatment Strategies
Alzheimer's Facts and Statistics
We've all had times when we can't remember where we put our keys or when an appointment was supposed to be. These occasional memory lapses are a normal part of being human. So when should you worry about signs of Alzheimer's Disease? A simple example is: If you forgot where you put your glasses there is no great cause for concern ... but if you've forgotten you wear glasses you have significant reason to worry about your memory problem. A more extensive list of Alzheimer's Symptoms is as follows: a chronic, progressively worsening problem accompanied by disorientation, problems with judgement, concentration, language and mathematical skills, physical coordination, and sleeplessness, the repetition of the same ideas or movements, the tendency to wander off and get lost, "sunsetting" or restlessness and wandering off in the late afternoon and night, dramatic personality changes, and eventually the loss of the ability to perform basic self-care functions. Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia that already affects millions of Americans and that is expected to affect millions more as the number of people over 50 continues to increase.

A lzheimers is one of the most disabling afflictions among older people. Alzheimers is a progressive disorder that slowly kills nerve cells in the brain. Although Alzheimers is detected more often among senior citizens, individuals as young as 50 may show signs of Alzheimers Alzheimers holds no boundaries, Alzheimers is located cross culturally and Alzheimers is found in both sexes in equal proportions There is no one particular test for Alzheimers but ruling out other conditions of memory loss like small strokes, Parkinson’s disease or depression will lead to an Alzheimers diagnosis. Using a variety of methods 90% of Alzheimers cases can be diagnosed, 100% accuracy can only be achieved with Alzheimers upon autopsy to check for plaques and tangles.

What Is Alzheimer's?
Alzheimer's is a progressive, degenerative disorder that affects the brain. It damages the brain cells responsible for intellectual functioning in the brain, including memory , intelligence, judgment, and speech. Alzheimers leads to the loss of mental and physical functions. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia in older people. It affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. A small percentage Alzheimer's patients are under 50 years of age. However, most are over 65 years of age. A rare and aggressive form of Alzheimer's can happen in some people in their 40s and 50s. Over the course of years, as the disease progresses, individuals loose their ability to perform the basic tasks that are part of everyday life and usually end up requiring constant care and supervision. Symptoms The first noticeable symptoms of Alzheimer's are: loss of memory, trouble performing tasks, poor judgement, misplacing things, inability to think and understand and gradual changes in behaviour. Memory loss - Memory loss is usually the first noticible sign of Alzheimer's. Memory loss starts slowly, but soon the episodes become more and more frequent. People with Alzheimer's forget things very often. They have trouble remembering answers to questions they may have asked a short time earlier. This causes the person to ask the same question repeatedly.

http://www.brainsource.com/alzheims.htm
Alzheimer's Disease is a degenerative condition of the brain that causes progressive loss of mental functions. Usually fairly significant memory problems are first noticed, with progression to impairments in learning, planning, and general intellectual and cognitive abilities. This form of dementia has an insidious beginning in the 50s and 60s age range. Subtle personality changes, loss of interest in social contacts, mild depression, and impulsive decisions are typical. Definitive diagnosis, however, depends on many factors a health care provider can sort out. Several risk factors may contribute to the development of Alzheimer's dementia including genetic factors, family history, prior brain injury, and prior stroke. The precise mix of causes of Alzheimer's Disease is unknown. However, in all true cases of Alzheimer's disease specific structural changes occur to neural cells scattered throughout the brain. These changes render the cells incapable of transmitting nerve signals. As the number of these impaired cells increases, the functional consequences become more pronounced. Neurological and neuropsychological examinations are the best methods for diagnosing Alzheimer's or differentiating the condition from any number of other dementia conditions. Objective testing can differentiate age-normal from abnormal changes in mental functions. Neuropsychological examination can help differentiate the mild depression that usually accompanies early Alzheimer's from other, non-dementia, causes of depression.

Alzheimer's Disease Assistance
More than 250,000 Ohioans are estimated to be suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, a progressive, mentally and physically disabling brain disorder that has no known cause or cure. Because victims eventually become unable to care for themselves, the cost of long-term care associated with Alzheimer's is staggering - estimated at more than $80 billion per year nationally - and public costs are expected to increase 20-fold by the year 2030. To help those with Alzheimer's Disease, their families and caregivers, the Department of Aging supports respite care programs. Respite care involves providing temporary care for an Alzheimer's patient to give family members time to attend to their own needs. Respite care can take several forms: a home care worker visiting the home of an Alzheimer's patient, a stay in an adult day care center, overnight care in a hospital or nursing home, support groups, caregiver training or family care planning meetings. Ohio's 12 area agencies on aging coordinate innovative respite care and support services to relieve the stresses and responsibilities that accompany constant caregiving, and keep those afflicted in the home as long as possible.
