1. Hur definieras demens?

Solutions for Living with Alzheimer's: The Caregiver's Guide to Home Modification
By Mark Warner A.I.A., NCARB and Ellen Warner, M.ED. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease may be one of the greatest challenges a family can experience. Until recently, information on how to "Alzheimer's-proof" your home has been difficult to find. The purpose of this article is to provide information on modifying the home to care for a person with Alzheimer's. It is intended to make it easier for families and caregivers to create a safer and more sensitive home environment. We describe the steps to take and products that are available to modify your home and tackle the difficulties you may encounter along the way. Alzheimer's affects the brain and its ability to process information each case is unique. You should not expect logical conclusions from a person who is losing their ability to think rationally. There are no rules and every suggestion must be reviewed in terms of your special situation, needs and abilities of your loved one.

    What Is Alzheimer's?
Alzheimer's is a progressive, degenerative disorder that affects the brain. It damages the brain cells responsible for intellectual functioning in the brain, including memory , intelligence, judgment, and speech. Alzheimers leads to the loss of mental and physical functions. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia in older people. It affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. A small percentage Alzheimer's patients are under 50 years of age. However, most are over 65 years of age. A rare and aggressive form of Alzheimer's can happen in some people in their 40s and 50s. Over the course of years, as the disease progresses, individuals loose their ability to perform the basic tasks that are part of everyday life and usually end up requiring constant care and supervision. Symptoms The first noticeable symptoms of Alzheimer's are: loss of memory, trouble performing tasks, poor judgement, misplacing things, inability to think and understand and gradual changes in behaviour. Memory loss - Memory loss is usually the first noticible sign of Alzheimer's. Memory loss starts slowly, but soon the episodes become more and more frequent. People with Alzheimer's forget things very often. They have trouble remembering answers to questions they may have asked a short time earlier. This causes the person to ask the same question repeatedly.

Preparing for Advanced Stages Alzheimer's Disease
(ARA) - A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can be devastating to a patient, family and friends. While there isn't a cure for this frightening disease, a patient can live an average of eight years after diagnosis some as long as 20 years. Knowing who to contact about financial, legal guardianship and will and estate planning can help reduce the fears and anxiety that go along with determining what to do next. Financial planning According to Alzheimer's care experts at Beverly Healthcare, Alzheimer's patients who are concerned about how they'll pay for the care they will need in the later stages of the disease should consider discussing their future needs with their families and a financial advisor planning for the financial needs of the patient's future is a wise step. The time to discuss financial needs such as current sources of income and potential care expenses physician visits, care services and housing should be at a time when the patient has the mental ability to help in the planning. During the planning process, keep in mind that in addition to income, other financial resources may be available through government assistance or community-based organizations. For example, private health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid are available to many people. Private health insurance includes retiree and government-funded insurance, such as Medigap. Other types of insurance, like long-term care insurance, may also help pay for 24-hour care. Medicare covers some of the services a person with Alzheimer's may need such as inpatient hospital care and a portion of the doctor's fees, along with some other medical expenses; however, Medicare payment for nursing home care is very limited. Medicaid benefits differ state-to-state, and eligibility is dependent on both income and property requirements as determined by the state.
