Welcome To Alzheimer Solutions!
I became interested in Alzheimer's disease in 1990, when my father was diagnosed with the disease. He had been losing weight since 1988. Looking back, the early weight loss was the first sign of Alzheimer's disease.
When Dad was diagnosed with the disease, I began spending hours in medical libraries. I hoped, through library research, to find a "cure" for Dad.
The magic "cure" never came. Dad died of Alzheimer's a few days before Christmas,on December 18, 1993. Christmas, once a joyous holiday for me,is now always a bit sad.
Dad's death inspired me to return to graduate school. I earned a master's level Certificate in Gerontology. I earned a certification in laboratory Biotechnology. In 1999, I founded Alzheimer Solutions,a small private company, devoted to alzheimer research and caregiver education.
At my Alzheimer Solutions laboratory, I am searching for compounds that will benefit alzheimer patients. When I discover a helpful compound, I intend to make it non-commercial and turn it over to someone who will distribute it to all who need it.
I am also trying to help caregivers. They need to know where to find helpful resources. The Memory Clinic and Adult Day Care sections on this web site will help caregivers find needed help and resources. More resource listings are planned, including a searchable database for medical professionals.

The most common form of dementia among older people is Alzheimer's disease (AD), which involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Although scientists are learning more every day, right now they still do not know what causes AD, and there is no cure. Scientists think that as many as 4.5 million Americans suffer from AD. The disease usually begins after age 60, and risk goes up with age. While younger people also may get AD, it is much less common. About 5 percent of men and women ages 65 to 74 have AD, and nearly half of those age 85 and older may have the disease. It is important to note, however, that AD is not a normal part of aging. AD is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German doctor. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. He found abnormal clumps (now called amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibers (now called neurofibrillary tangles). Today, these plaques and tangles in the brain are considered signs of AD.

ALZHEIMERS Over 4 million people suffer from Alzheimers. What causes this disorder is unknown. You dont feel Alzheimers. It just silently destroys your brain cells and steals your life little by little. People with alzheimers develop progressive loss of memory and lose the ability to take care of themselves. It attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. Over time alzheimers strips away all sense of self until there is only a shell. Certain studies have suggested that alzheimers may be related to an accumulation of aluminum in the brain. Although the link between alzheimers and aluminum remains unclear it is advisable to avoid cooking in aluminum utensils, do not wrap food in aluminum foil and avoid drinking from aluminum cans. Also boil your water. Large amounts of vitamin E may slow the onset of alzheimers. Dosages of 2,000 IU per day are recommended. Ginkgo Biloba Extract may also be of help. DRUG FOR ALZHEIMERS : In findings that could lead to a new Alzheimer's disease drug, researchers at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco, have isolated a protein fragment that nurtures brain cells. The effect could prevent loss of brain function caused by Alzheimer's. The frag- ment acts through the same mechanisms as its larger parent pro- tein. However, a drug based on the fragment would be small enough to pass from the bloodstream into the brain, said Dr. Frank Longo, UCSF professor, vice chair of neurology and SFVAMC chief of research.

STAGES OF ALZHEIMERS: (Caregiver's Guide) For the elderly over age 85, about 47% suffer from Alzheimers and is the commonest reason for someone to be admitted to a nursing home. The disease does not discriminate between races, but it appears to affect more women than men simply for the reason that they tend to live longer. There are three stages to Alzheimer's.
In the first stage, lasting two to four years, there are subtle changes- lack of "spark", lack of energy and a zest for life, lack of humor, decreased interest in family life, friends sports and other favorite pastimes. The personality change may become a caricature of the previous personality- the extrovert becomes a bombastic showoff; the introvert becomes reclusive. The first stage shows a loss of short term memory though past memories may remain unaffected. Toward the end of this stage, the person may not be able to hold a job, carry out most daily tasks or organize time and dates.
The middle stage may last several years and is characterized by extreme confusion and difficulty in coping with new situation since long term memory fails and is gradually erased from the mind. The patient will still recognize familiar faces and perhaps latch on to one or two in a last grasp to retain some sanity. Many functions must be given up- driving most obviously. The patients may babble since they lose track of not only other conversations, but their own. Wandering and getting lost are frequent. Sundowning, a phenomenon associated with extreme restlessness, agitation and wandering may become a daily occurrence at about four in the afternoon.

In advanced stages of the disease, all memory and mental functioning may be lost. The condition predominantly affects the cerebral cortex and hippocampus , which lose mass and shrink (atrophy) as the disease advances.

Test of Alzheimer's vaccine in mice shows promise
July 7, 1999 Web posted at: 11:09 p.m. EDT (0309 GMT) From staff and wire reports (CNN) An experimental vaccine shows promise in reducing brain deposits linked to Alzheimer's disease in mice suggesting the substance might one day be used to treat humans suffering from the debilitating disorder. Scientists at Elan Pharmaceuticals developed the vaccine, called AN-1792. It is designed to attack the characteristic plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's sufferers, which are caused by a sticky protein called amyloid. "We view the plaque, if you will, as an invader in the brain, and we were curious to know if we would treat this as though it was any other type of invader, such as a bacteria, and thus use a vaccination approach," said Dr. Ivan Lieberburg of Elan Pharmaceuticals.
