Alternating hemiplegia is a rare neurological disorder that develops in childhood, usually before the first 4 years. The disorder is characterized by recurrent but temporary episodes of paralysis on one side of the body. The paralysis can affect eye movements, limbs, or facial muscles. One form of the disorder, identified very recently, has a favorable outlook. It occurs primarily at night, when a child awakens, and is apparently related to migraine. These children have no other mental or neurological impairments. In more serious cases symptoms may include mental impairment, balance and gait difficulties, excessive sweating, and changes in body temperature. Seizures can occur. Sleep helps in the recovery from the periods of paralysis but the paralysis can recur upon waking. The cause of the disorder is unknown.

AHCF Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood Foundation Return to Main Page About AHCF Frequently Asked Questions Contacts ... Families Worldwide Frequently Asked Questions What is Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC)? AHC is a rare neurological disorder in which repeated, transient attacks of hemiplegia occur, affecting one side of the body or the other, or both sides of the body. The hemiplegia (paralysis of a portion of the body) ranges from simple numbness in an extremity to full loss of feeling and movement. The attacks may last for minutes, hours or even days and are normally relieved by sleep. The attacks of hemiplegia may alternate from one side of the body to another. What other symptoms are associated with AHC? Children with AHC have exhibited a wide range of symptoms in addition to AHC. These include tonic attacks (lack of muscle tone), dystonic posturing (stiffening of extremities), nystagmus and other oculomotor abnormalities (eye disorders), developmental delays, mental retardation and seizures. Not all children suffer from all of these associated symptoms and there is no current evidence to prove that these symptoms are associated with, or caused by, AHC. What causes a hemiplegic episode?

: My son, now 6 years old, was diagnosed with partial seizures at age 14 months. He did pretty well the next two years while on phenobarbital. Since that time, he has had increasing "seizure" activity which was treated with tegretol and depakote. His seizure activity continued. EEGs have never shown epileptic waveforms. In July, he had an EEG and developed nystagmus and mouth sucking during photic stimulation but no epileptic waveforms were noted. The next day
he had a video EEG with him having 3 episodes that we had been calling seizures. Again the EEG did not show epileptic waveforms. After his seizures, my son would often experience weakness on one side of his body. These episodes have escalated to sometimes as many as 10+ a day, although on a rare day, he will have none. He was then diagnosed with alternating hemiplegia of childhood. He pediatric neurologist would like a second opinion from someone who has treated a
child with this disorder. We were originally going to take him to Detroit Childrens Hospital but feel that the six hour drive would be too much for him. Since Cleveland is much closer to us, we are wondering if any of your staff have cared for a child with this disorder. He also is developmentally delayed. Thank you.
