General Discussion
Laurence-Moon Syndrome is a rare inherited disorder characterized by diminished hormone production by the testes or ovaries (hypogonadism), progressive loss of vision (retinitis pigmentosa), mental retardation, and paralysis of the legs and lower part of the body accompanied by involuntary muscle contractions (spastic paraplegia). Confusion exists in the medical literature regarding the difference between Laurence-Moon Syndrome and Bardet-Biedl Syndrome. Some researchers believe that Bardet-Biedl Syndrome is a subdivision of Laurence-Moon Syndrome which they term "Laurence-Moon-Biedl Syndrome."

In this edition: Editorial Carl-Henry Alstrom Biog Alstrom Clinic Alstrom Conference ... Fundraising Editorial So I thought I would begin this New Year edition with the biography of Carl-Henry Alstrom, this first appeared in the SASF International newsletter so some of you may already have read it. Return to Top ^ BIOGRAPHY: CARL-HENRY ALSTROM Carl-Henry Alstrom was born in Vasteras, Sweden on 3 May 1907. He studied in Stockholm and received his doctorate in psychiatry in 1935 at the Karolinska Institute of Medicine. He began his career as a research scientist in 1938 when he published his landmark observations on the connection between schizophrenia and tuberculosis. From 1940-42 he was Deputy Director of the Institute for Human Genetics at Uppsala, where he conducted genetic research. In 1945 he was made 2n d Assistant Physician at the Neurological Clinic in the famous Serafimerlasarettet Hospital Stockholm. He was Director of the Experimental Psychiatry Clinical Laboratory from 1948-1960, with an interest in the clinical, social and genetic aspects of epilepsy. A study published by Alstrom in1950 is still considered a landmark on the subject of epileptics in society. He subsequently became Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Karolinska Institute at St Gorans Hospital, Stockholm and served with distinction from 1961 until his retirement in 1973. The new syndrome was known for a short time as the Alstrom-Hallgren syndrome, but later was designated simply Alstrom Syndrome. Although they searched throughout Sweden, Alstrom and his colleagues found no other cases of Alstrom Syndrome. There are several Alstrom Syndrome patients now living in Sweden, but as yet scientists have not been able to determine if they are related to the first patients of Carl-Henry Alstrom.

Alström Syndrome is a very rare, hereditary genetic disorder comprised of many component conditions, first described by C.H. Alström in Sweden in 1959. The symptoms of the components of the condition arise at different stages making diagnosis difficult. The features of this very complex disorder are childhood blindness, early hearing loss, diabetes, kidney failure and cardiomyopathy, a heart condition which if left untreated can lead to heart failure. Cardiomyopathy may be the first symptom to present with Alström Syndrome, in many of the children with Alström Syndrome cardiomyopathy has presented during the first 6 months of life.

On a warm, sunny afternoon, three-year-old Kiefer Bates is enjoying a popsicle on the deck of his house in Turner Valley.
Kiefer has Alstrom Syndrome and is the first child in Alberta diagnosed with the disease and the second child in western Canada who is afflicted. Currently, there are only 138 individuals in the world who have the disease.
Alstrom Syndrome is a life-threatening, genetic disease which usually strikes in early childhood.
The disease is accompanied by retinal degeneration which can lead to blindness, hearing loss, obesity, rapid-eye shifting, photophobia (hyper-sensitivity to light) and Type II Diabetes mellitus.
Alstrom Syndrome can also lead to hypothyroidism, liver dysfunction, scoliosis, heart disease and heart failure in infancy or early childhood.
'I started searching for answers when he was two months old,' said Bates. 'We took him to specialists and hospitals in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary.'
