The phenomena seen with transmissible spongiform encephalopathies and an attempt to explain what is seen
An attempt is made here to give a short description of what is seen with these diseases. They are all fatal, untreatable, diseases, for which there is no adequate method of diagnosis before death. The can be passed from one species to another by taking them in orally or by injection. The disease does not seem to be destroyed by simple cooking and produced no immunity in the body. The TSEs that we know are closely related in the way that damage is produced and the method of transmission. The description given here is from the article 'TSEs' of the Encylcopaedia of Microbiology Volume 4 Academic Press 1992. To jump to the specific aspect of the text, click on one of the headings below

Scrapie
In 1936 reserarchers showed that scrapie could be transmitted to a healthy sheep by the intra-ocular inoculation of a homogenate of scrapie infected brain. This experiment led to large amounts of resrarch conernig the mode of transmission of TSE.
Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies of humans
TSEs of humans are divided into specific clinical types, which may appear similar histopathologically but are either spread differently or have different patterns of distribution and prevalence.

Alpers disease
Alpers' disease is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease of the brain that occurs in infants and children. It is an autosomal recessive disorder that is sometimes seen in siblings. First signs of the disease, which include intractable seizures and failure to meet meaningful developmental milestones, usually occur in infancy. Primary symptoms of the disease are developmental delay, progressive mental retardation , hypotonia (low muscle tone), spasticity (stiffness of the limbs), and dementia. Seizures may include epilepsia partialis continua, a type of seizure that consists of repeated myoclonic (muscle) jerks. Optic atrophy may also occur, often leading to blindness. And, although physical signs of chronic liver dysfunction may not be present, many patients suffer liver impairment leading to liver failure. While some researchers believe that Alpers' disease is caused by an underlying metabolic defect, no consistent defect has been identified.
Treatment
There is no cure for Alpers' disease and, currently, no way to slow its progression. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Anticonvulsants may be used to treat the seizures. However, caution should be used when selecting

Alpers' disease is a rare, genetically determined disease of the brain that causes progressive degeneration of grey matter in the cerebrum. The first sign of the disease usually begins early in life with convulsions. Other symptoms are developmental delay, progressive mental retardation, hypotonia (low muscle tone), spasticity (stiffness of the limbs), dementia, and liver conditions such as jaundice and cirrhosis that can lead to liver failure. Optic atrophy may also occur, often causing blindness. Researchers believe that Alpers' disease is caused by an underlying metabolic defect. Some patients have mutations in mitochondrial DNA. Researchers suspect that Alpers' disease is sometimes misdiagnosed as childhood jaundice or liver failure, since the only method of making a definitive diagnosis is by autopsy or brain biopsy after death.

Introduction
What is the cause?
The exact cause is unknown but we believe it is due to a biochemical fault which causes damage to, and loss of, cells in the grey matter of the brain. The progressive damage to the brain causes epilepsy and increasing physical and mental problems. This is because of increasing blockages in the messages within the brain and from the brain to other parts of the body.
How is it diagnosed?
Is it inherited? Human beings have about 30 to 40,000 different genes, each of which has a function in making an individual person. The genes are arranged in pairs (one of the pair from each parent) on 23 chromosomes. Inevitably, some of these genes are faulty; a normal gene can overcome a faulty one, but if both genes in the pair are faulty, the genetic instructions cannot work.
Is prenatal testing available?
