Supporting Research Alopecia is the absence or slowing of hair growth in an area of the body where hair formerly grew. It may be caused by physical damage to the hair itself or to the hair follicles, but it is most often the result of changes in the natural growth cycle of hair. In some types of alopecia, the growth cycle is disrupted by some temporary situation such as a chemical imbalance or stress. However, the vast majority (95 percent) of cases of hair loss in both men (male pattern baldness) and women (female diffuse baldness) are genetic in origin. This is called androgenetic alopecia. Signs and Symptoms
  • Male pattern baldness. Thinning or absence of hair at the hairline and top of the head. Female diffuse baldness. A gradual thinning of hair, especially on the top of the head. Hairline generally remains intact. Broken hairs, or hairs easily removed One or more round or oval bald patches

Alopecia areata

Ages 2 to 8
by Annie Stine
Approved by the ParentCenter Medical Advisory Board What's below: What is alopecia areata? How can I tell if alopecia areata is what's causing my child's hair to fall out? Will the hair come back? Is there any treatment? ... Where can I get more information? What is alopecia areata?
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that causes patches of hair to fall out. It can happen at any age and is most likely to start in childhood. It affects about 4.5 million people in the United States. Except in extreme cases, children with alopecia areata almost always recover at least some of their hair. If your child has this condition, his immune system will attack his hair follicles as if to protect his body from an illness. This attack shrinks the follicles; they then produce hair so slowly that no hair is visible for months or years at a time. "We don't know what triggers the immune system to target the hair follicles," says Patricia Treadwell, professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. "Parents often say that their child was sick before his hair started falling out, so it's possible that the trigger is a virus or bacteria." The tendency to develop alopecia areata may be genetically inherited; one in five people with the disorder has a family member who has it, too. It's also more common in families with a history of asthma, hay fever, childhood diabetes, and other autoimmune diseases.

Questions and Answers About Alopecia Areata February 2003 This booklet contains general information about alopecia areata (al-oh-PEE-shah ar-ee-AH-tah). It describes what alopecia is, its causes, and treatment options. Information is also provided on current research. If you have further questions after reading this booklet, you may wish to discuss them with your doctor. What Is Alopecia Areata? Alopecia areata is considered an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, the tiny cup-shaped structures from which hairs grow. This can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere. In most cases, hair falls out in small, round patches about the size of a quarter. In many cases, the disease does not extend beyond a few bare patches. In some people, hair loss is more extensive. Although uncommon, the disease can progress to cause total loss of hair on the head (referred to as alopecia areata totalis) or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body (alopecia areata universalis).

Hairy Problems
"Dearest granddaughter, come close and look into my eyes." Grandmother Growth beckons and her voice grows deeper and more resonant. "Look deep into my eyes and acknowledge the beauty there.
"Yes, my skin is wrinkled. My face is the face of age, and to many, that is fearful. But my beauty, like my wise blood, now resides inside of me. Can you see it? Can you feel it? Can you look beyond the hair on my chin?" she says grinning, flicking her fingers under her chin in a most unladylike manner.
"Can you forgive the places where my scalp shines through? Can you find the truth of my beauty, the beauty of age, which is so different from the beauty of youth?" Her eyes grow fierce, but sparkle with amusement. "I know you can, for I know how beautiful I am."
Grandmother Growth takes your chin in her strong hand and looks at you with eyes so intense you fear you may catch on fire. She commands: "When you look into your mirror, I ask you to look deep into your own eyes and to acknowledge your own inner beauty.
"I know, I know, metamorphosis is changing you and you don't like it. Like a teenager, you peer and peer into the looking glass, noting every new wrinkle, every hair on your face (and other new places). Counting each grey hair as it grows. Worrying that your hair seems to fall out by the handful.
