Cyproterone Acetate
Cyproterone Acetate is used to reduce sex drive in men which have excessive sex drive and for the treatment of pronounced sexual aggression. It is also prescribed to treat severe hirsuitism in woman of childbearing age and also androgenetic alopecia in women. Like cimitedine and other similar type drugs Cyproterone acetate exerts its effects by blocking the binding of DHT dihydrotestosterone to its receptors.
Studies involving Cyproterone Acetate :
STUDY: Reduced serum vitamin B12 levels during oral cyproterone-acetate and ethinyl-oestradiol therapy in women with diffuse androgen-dependent alopecia.

History
Anatomy
The hair itself, or the shaft, is composed of keratin, and is essentially a collection of dead cells which are the product of the hair follicle. The hair follicle describes an invagination of the epidermis into the underlying dermis. The proximal end of the follicle has an onion-shaped dilatation called the bulb, which is hollow at its base and envelopes the dermal papilla. The follicle has two layers, the dermal layer (fibrous tissue) and the epidermal layer. Into each follicle, the arrectores pilorum muscle inserts at the dermal layer below the entrance of the sebaceous gland duct. The arrectore pilorus acts to elevate the hair shaft and express sebum.

Introduction Alopecia affects both men and women and may result from a variety of causes. The cosmetic consequences may have a substantial emotional impact on the patient. As might be expected, many patients are not in the least content with their hair loss and seek the advice of a physician in search of a remedy. Depending on the cause and extent of the problem, medical and surgical therapies exist which may offer assistance for the patient experiencing alopecia. These modalities may be used alone or in combination, and the particular regimen must be individualized to meet the particular needs of the patient. The physician is obligated to ensure that the patient has a clear understanding of his/her condition and expectations in order for a realistic and thoughtful treatment plan to be devised. This presentation will consider the etiology of alopecia and patient selection with an emphasis on the medical and surgical management of the disorder.

What causes Alopecia?
What causes Alopecia or hair loss and what alternatives are there?
The human hair varies widely in its color and texture. Also thickness and the amount of body hair a person has depends on age, sex, race and their genetic makeup. Hair grows everywhere on the body except the palms of our hands and soles of our feet. Many hairs are so fine they are vitually invisible, while others are so course that we relax, bleach, dye or remove them to achieve a smoother look. Whether it is course, fine, thick, wavy, curly or straight, it is the hair on our heads that causes us the most concern. When we start to lose it there, it is considered alopecia. Basically hair is made up of a protein called keratin, the hair you can see above the skin level is a string of dead keratin cells. The average adult loses up to 100 of them a day. This is normal and even losing up to 300 a day can be alright, if the person has thick hair. bodyOffer(29396) A gradual thinning of the hair is natural in both men and women with aging. This is known as involutional alopecia. The hair follicles go into a telogenic or resting stage. The remaining hairs become shorter and fewer in number. Androgenic alopecia is a genetically predisposed condition that affects both men and women. Men can begin losing their hair as early as their teens or early 20's. A receeding hairline and gradual disappearance of hair from the crown is called male pattern baldness. Most women don't have noticable thinning hair until their 40's or later. In women, female pattern baldness is typically a general thinning over the entire scalp, with the most hair loss at the crown.

Alopecia Areata
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Alopecia areata is a skin disorder that typically produces one or more patches of hair loss, most often on the scalp. Usually the bald patches appear suddenly, affect only a limited area, and regrow hair within 12 months or less. For some people, however, the problem can be more chronic and more severe, producing either total baldness (alopecia totalis) or total loss of all body hair (alopecia universalis).

    Color Dilution Alopecia
    By Teri Dickinson, DVM
Alopecia (hair loss) related to dilute coat color is a recognized condition in dogs. The currently accepted medical terminology for this condition is Color Dilution Alopecia (CDA). The condition may affect any dilutely pigmented dog, regardless of coat color . This condition was previously known as Blue Balding Syndrome, Blue Doberman Syndrome, Color Mutant Alopecia, Congenital Alopecia, etc. The term Color Mutant Alopecia arose because dilutes were at one time mutations from the deep pigment occurring in wild canines. Dilutes are now a regularly occurring form of pigmentation in many breeds and have been for hundreds of years. The term mutation is therefore not applicable to dilute individuals. References to Doberman Pinschers or blue hair coats arose because the condition is common in blue individuals of this breed, but it is not limited to either blue dogs or Dobermans. The term congenital means present at birth, but CDA affected dogs are born with normal hair coats.
The dilute (also known as Maltese) gene also appears in both mice and cats, and interestingly enough, is not associated with any abnormal coat conditions in those species.

American Academy of Dermatology WHITE PAPER ON ALOPECIA AREATA AAD AD HOC COMMITTEE TO REVIEW REIMBURSEMENT FOR ALOPECIA AREATA I. WHAT IS ALOPECIA AREATA? Alopecia areata is a common disease that causes loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere. Alopecia areata may cause patchy hair loss over vast portions of the scalp. Any hair-bearing area on the body may be affected. In alopecia totalis all hair on the entire scalp is lost and the scalp surface becomes totally smooth. In alopecia universalis all hair on the entire head and body is lost so that the scalp is unprotected from the sun and elements, the eyes are unprotected from dust and glare, and the nose and sinuses are unprotected from foreign particles. Other than the hair, nails are the other site that is sometimes affected. The nail involvement may be limited to pin-prick indentations, or all the nails may be severely distorted. Alopecia areata occurs at all ages although children are affected most often and the disease affects males and females equally. Patients with alopecia areata are otherwise healthy, although they may have a higher incidence of atopic conditions such as atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis and asthma. The condition is not contagious. It is estimated that over two million people have the disease. II. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

What is pruritis? It is the unpleasant sensation ("itch") that provokes a desire to scratch. You may wonder, "Of what benefit is itching and the response to it, i.e. scratching"?
That is a good question...and I can not provide an answer to it. I can only say that it happens and that it is the most common symptom in veterinary dermatology. This section will describe the process, and the conditions that stimulate it. By understanding pruritis, you will, hopefully, appreciate the way we try to deal with it within veterinary medicine.

    Treatment of Pruritis

    Priniples:
    • Decrease the magnitude of pruritis by depleting or removing pruritic mediators, and/or removing the cause; if more than one cause of pruritis is present removing one or more or these may decrease the sensation and intensity of the itch to below an "itch-threshhold"....effectively stopping the itch even though not all contributors to the itch are eliminated
