Male pattern androgenetic alopecia
Rodney Sinclair senior lecturer University of Melbourne, Department of Dermatology, St Vincent's Hospital, Victoria Parade, Melbourne 3065, Australia Androgenetic alopecia is characterised by progressive, patterned hair loss from the scalp. Recently the pathogenesis and genetic basis of the hair loss have been better understood, as has the distress experienced by men who have lost their hair. There have also been breakthroughs in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. The transition of some terminal hairs into vellus hairs is a universal physiological secondary sexual characteristic. Androgenetic alopecia becomes a medical problem only when the hair loss is subjectively seen as excessive, premature, and distressing.

This condition was named “Alopecia X” in order to reflect the lack of knowledge surrounding this condition and its causes. Given that there are numerous therapies that work for some cases and not for others and that many of these therapies seem to be in complete opposition, it may be that Alopecia X is not one disease but several and we simply do not know how to distinguish them. Alopecia X has goes by many names:
  • Black Skin Disease
    Growth Hormone Responsive Alopecia
    Castration responsive Alopecia
    The Cold Funk
Follicular Dysplasia of the Siberian Husky
    Post-clipping Alopecia
    Adrenal Sex Hormone Alopecia
The term “Alopecia” is simply the medical word for hair loss. The many other terms surrounding this hormonal condition simply reflect the bits and pieces of knowledge we have regarding this condition and its many potential therapies. This web page attempts to create an update of what is currently believed about this confusing condition. THE TYPICAL PATIENT The typical Alopecia X patient is a spitz or Nordic breed such as a Chow Chow, Pomeranian, Alaskan Malamute, Elkhound, or similar. Poodles have also been over-represented. Hair loss begins in early adulthood, usually by age 3 years. First the long primary hairs go leaving a fuzzy puppy-like coat but eventually that goes, too. The bald skin pigments, is not itchy, and usually does not get infected.

Definition
Alopecia simply means hair loss (baldness). Description Hair loss occurs for a great many reasonsfrom pulling it out to having it killed off by cancer chemotherapy . Some causes are considered natural, while others signal serious health problems. Some conditions are confined to the scalp. Others reflect disease throughout the body. Being plainly visible, the skin and its components can provide early signs of disease elsewhere in the body. Oftentimes, conditions affecting the skin of the scalp will result in hair loss. The first clue to the specific cause is the pattern of hair loss, whether it be complete baldness (alopecia totalis), patchy bald spots, thinning, or hair loss confined to certain areas. Also a factor is the condition of the hair and the scalp beneath it. Sometimes only the hair is affected; sometimes the skin is visibly diseased as well. Causes and symptoms
  • Male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) is considered normal in adult males. It is easily recognized by the distribution of hair loss over the top and front of the head and by the healthy condition of the scalp.
  • Alopecia areata is a hair loss condition of unknown cause that can be patchy or extend to complete baldness.

Welcome to the webpage for the Alopecia Areata Support Association. About Us
The AASA is a volunteer group established to provide information and support for people with alopecia (areata, totalis or universalis), and their family and friends. We hold quarterly meetings which are open to all members of the public free of charge, and an annual open day. Contact us for more information, to join the group, or simply to talk to someone else who's been through it. People who have lived with alopecia for many years know only too well the loneliness and distress the condition causes. People who have only recently developed alopecia are experiencing the distress and bewilderment of being told "nothing can be done for you, you just have to learn to live with it." In most cases, the person concerned has never heard the word 'alopecia' and has no understanding of what it means. It happens to men, women and children; it can happen at any age.

TCM Hospital: Alopecia Areata And Traditional Chinese Medicine In China
Alopecia areata is a type of minor baldness which appears abruptly. It is characterized by the sudden loss of hair, and is not accompanied with any inflammatory damage or subjective symptoms. In TCM it is called (alopecia areata). Mian Points of Diagnosis 1. There will be some round alopecia (hairless) areas found occasionally on the top of the head. There may only be one or more areas, the size of a coin or apricot, with a clear border. The scalp will be shiny. Alopecia areata can appear in several parts simultaneously or one next to each other. 2. Only a few patients lose all of their hair (bare head). This is called "alopecia capitis totalis." In special cases, some patients may lose all their hair all over the body including hair of the eyebrow, armpit, and so on. This is called "alopecia universalis." 3. It is a chronic disease without subjective symptoms, but may be associated with mental irritation or excessive mental strain. It can occur at any age and may recur after recovery.

Alopecia (Hair Loss) and Autoimmune Disease
Q:
Help! I have recently been diagnosed with alopecia and have hair loss over my entire body, including the scalp. I will be bald soon. I have had vitiligo for 16 years and never had hair loss. In November, I started taking Celebrex for arthritis and started losing hair about January or February. Can there be a connection to this? A: Alopecia or hair loss can follow serious infections with high fever, pregnancy, severe dieting, skin diseases or use of prescription medications. Chemotherapy for cancer is a well-known cause of hair loss, but anti-depressants, anti-inflammatory medication and blood pressure medicines have also been reported to affect hair growth. In your case, I do not think the Celebrex is responsible, but that you have alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that affects about 2% of the population. It can range from small round patches of hair loss to loss of all scalp hair (alopecia totalis) to loss of all body hair (alopecia universalis), which is what you have.

(For latest news about Paul's hair - follow this link Jane started teasing me about my bald spot in June 1998. I didn't take it seriously at first, but in July I noticed my hairline was receding, too, and by the end of July, the rate of hair-loss was starting to seem a bit unnatural, not least because I was also losing my eyebrows! In August I went to a doctor, who sent me to a specialist, but by then my hairdresser had already made a diagnosis about my increasingly patchy hair - and the specialist didn't really tell me anything more than I already knew. It was Alopecia. In October I shaved off what was left, and a few weeks later I was more or less totally bald - all over. It took about four months...
