    Definition
Allergies are abnormal reactions of the immune system which occur in response to otherwise harmless substances.
    Description
Allergies are among the most common of medical disorders. It is estimated that 60 million Americans, or more than one in every five people, suffer from some form of allergy, with similar proportions throughout much of the rest of the world. Allergy is the single largest reason for school absence and is a major source of lost productivity in the workplace. An allergy is a type of immune reaction. Normally, the immune system responds to foreign bodies, like pollen or bacteria, by producing specific proteins called antibodies that are capable of binding to identifying molecules (antigens) on the foreign body. This reaction between antibody and antigen sets off a series of reactions designed to protect the body from infection. Sometimes, this same series of reactions is triggered by harmless, everyday substances. This is the condition known as allergy, and the offending substance is called an allergen. Allergens enter the body through four main routes: the airways, the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and the circulatory system.

A study published in this week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that, contrary to many parents' fears, owning cats or dogs does not increase a child's risk of developing allergies, and in fact, may actually protect them. The study's lead author, Dr. Dennis Ownby of the Medical College of Georgia, says that even he was "very surprised" by the results. Ownby and colleagues followed more than 470 children from birth to age 6 or 7, comparing those exposed to cats and dogs during their first year of life to those who were not. By using skin-prick tests for detecting common allergies, the researchers found that, contrary to what many doctors had been taught for years, children who had lived with a pet were not at greater risk.

    Allergies: How To Avoid Them
Are allergies a problem? Some medical statistics indicate that 1-in-7 Americans experienced the symptoms of an allergy in 1950. By 1970, approximately 1-in-5 reported having allergies. And by 1985, approximately 75 Million Americans, or 1-in-3, suffered from allergies.
    Nutritional Support for Allergies
Click this link for details on how allergies are caused, and how to combat allergies with nutrition. What is an allergy?
An allergy is a catch-all word for a wide variety of reactions to substances that the body determines to be foreign. Anything that it does not recognize as itself can be considered an allergen . When the body encounters a foreign substance, it reacts by making antibodies or releasing certain chemicals called histamines . When histamines and other substances are released into the system, they cause an inflammatory reaction we call an allergy What are the symptoms?
The inflammatory reaction affects the tissue and organs, mainly the skin, mucous membranes, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms commonly produced include itching and watery eyes, runny and congested nose and sinuses, sneezing, respiratory symptoms, headache, skin reactions and rapid heart beat. Other symptoms may include fatigue, intestinal gas or pain, abdominal bloating and mood changes.

vet@dog Food Allergies Part I: Ear problems Food allergies can cause signs that airborne allergies cause, but there are a few differences. Unless a dog has moved to a different part of the country and has unexpected exposure to new allergens, the typical age that you begin to see airborne food allergies, the age is usually either significantly younger or significantly older. In other words, when allergies of SOME sort seem likely in a pup under one year of age or in a dog in middle to old age, then a food allergy should be considered first.
One of the earliest common manifestations of a food allergy may be recurrent ear infections. Therefore, it is appropriate to begin this food allergy discussion with a discussion on ear infections : Ear infection, as a "diagnosis", is a multifactorial issue, with causes that are neither simple to evaluate nor to treat.
    • Most (approx.80%) ear infections are caused by allergies, even if only one ear is involved.
