Does your dog have Food Allergies?
If you knew the ingredients in commercial dog food you wouldn’t feed it to a dog, let alone your best friend. West Highland White Terriers are known for having food allergies. I know most of the Westies on the block (it’s a big block) and most of them have some kind of stomach problem or skin allergies. I have two West Highland White Terriers. Spooky and Elle. Elle is one year old, strong and naturally healthy but Spooky has had problems since he was a small puppy. With vomiting, diarrhea and blood in his stools I visited different vets every few months.
Food Allergies? After $1200.00 dollars in examination, x-rays and drugs, they all told me that it was probably a food allergy because they couldn’t find anything wrong in the blood work or examination. They sent me home with a special diet of “Duck and potatoes”, “Venison and potatoes” and finally “Salmon and potatoes”. Nothing worked so they switched me to a hypoallergenic dog food at an exorbitant price. Still my Spooky-boy would loose his appetite, refuse to eat and vomit bile. I was frantic so I finally went to see a vet in San Mateo who told me Spooky had Colitis along with food allergies. We kept him on the anti-allergy formula but added bran to his diet. He improved and started eating more, gained weight and looked happier. Westies with food allergies like these are all too common. We hope we can give you some hints on how to keep your Westie or any other dog with food allergies in tip top form.

Allergies
Index to this page Immunologists, as well as the general public, use the term allergy in several different ways. I shall define it thus: An allergy is a harmful immune response elicited by an antigen that is not itself intrinsically harmful. Examples:
  • The windblown pollen released by orchard grass has no effect on me but produces a violent attack of hay fever (known to physicians as allergic rhinitis ) in my wife.
  • She, on the other hand, can safely handle the leaves of poison ivy while if I do so, I break out in a massive skin rash a day or two later.
Antigens that trigger allergies are often called allergens
Four different immune mechanisms can result in allergic responses.
1. Immediate Hypersensitivities.
These occur quickly after exposure to the allergen. They are usually mediated by antibodies of the IgE class. Examples: Go to discussion
2. Antibody-Mediated Cytotoxicity
Cell damage caused by antibodies directed against cell surface antigens. Hence a form of

Welcome to PSI
Patient Safety Institute (PSI) is the healthcare industry's response to the need for a trusted, National Medical Information Exchange (NMIE) that provides real time access to critical patient information (with patient consent) at the point of care. The PSI NMIE operates similar to the way that the VISA network does. Both provide a representative governance structure and a communications network that provides real time access to data which resides in disparate information stores. The PSI NMIE focuses on providing healthcare providers access to information banks of existing medical information at the point of clinical interaction. In the PSI network, the patient plays the central role in the linkage between various data sources, as he/she not only authorizes the data sharing, but also has the ability to provide supplemental information. Unlike traditional data collection and distribution systems, PSI does not accumulate and store clinical information; rather it gathers data from existing sources of electronic data in a method similar to the way

Allergies pose a significant and serious health problem in this country. According to conservative estimates, nearly 15 million Americans are plagued by hay fever and 10 million have asthma. Twelve million more Americans suffer from such allergies as eczema and hives, not to mention allergic reactions to food, drugs, and insect stings. Most of these disorders have a hereditary component and tend to run in families
    What Is An Allergic Reaction?
Basically, an allergic reaction occurs whenever the immune system overreacts to a seemingly harmless substance. Known as allergens, these substances include pollen, mold, house dust, mites, animal saliva and dander (skin shed by cats, dogs, or rabbits), feathers (such as those used in feather pillows), certain foods and drugs, and insect stings. Allergens are usually absorbed into the body by way of the skin, nasal passages, lungs, or digestive tract. Once inside the body, allergens stimulate the lymphocytes (small white blood cells) to produce what are known as allergic antibodies. The reaction between the allergen and these antibodies, which are attached to certain special cells (mast cells), leads to inflammation of the nose, eyes, lungs, and the digestive tract. A stuffy nose, sneezing, wheezing, skin rash, watery eyes, abdominal cramps, and nausea are some of the most common results.

    1. What Is An Allergy?
An allergy is an abnormal reaction by your body to substances which you are sensitized to. These substances are called allergens, and an allergic person produces antibodies against these allergens. Each time the allergic person comes in contact with an allergen after that first contact, certain cells in the body release chemical substances called mediators. Mediators, like histamine and leukotrienes, can cause one or more of the following symptoms: redness, swelling, itching and increased mucous production. With an allergy to pollens, there may be itchy eyes and runny nose. With an allergy to cats, there may be itchy eyes and swelling in the lungs. The body's response to the allergen results in individual signs and symptoms - not necessarily the same result in all people. The tendency to be allergic is inherited; the actual allergy is not inherited.

    Eye Allergies
Believe your eyes, and see what they may be telling you. If your eyes itch, are red, tearing or burning, pay attention to what they may be telling you. You may have eye allergies, or allergic conjunctivitis, a condition that affects millions of Americans. It is a condition that can occur alone, but often accompanies nasal allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, sniffling and a stuffy nose. And, while most people treat nasal allergy symptoms, they often ignore their itchy, red, watery eyes. This document answers questions about eye allergies and suggests effective ways for you to recognize and treat the symptoms.
    What causes eye allergies?
Just like hay fever and skin rashes, eye allergies develop when the body's immune system becomes sensitized and overreacts to something that is ordinarily harmless. An allergic reaction can occur whenever that "something" - called an allergen - comes into contact with your eyes. The allergen causes certain cells in the eye (called mast cells) to release histamine and other substances or chemicals that cause blood vessels in the eyes to swell, and the eyes to become itchy, red and watery.

    Children's Allergies
Any child may become allergic, but children from families with a history of allergy are more likely to be allergic. Children may inherit the tendency to become allergic from their parents, but only some of them will develop active allergic disease. Allergies can show up in different ways in children. Some children get skin rashes (atopic dermatitis) from allergy, some develop asthma, and some get allergic rhinitis, or hay fever. The following are just a few points on potential problems for children with allergic rhinitis. Early identification of allergic problems in your child will improve their quality of life, decrease missed school days and keep you at work. Nasal Congestion
If the congestion is left untreated, this mouthbreathing forces air currents through the mouth. The force of the air then changes the way the soft bones of the face grow. The face may actually become abnormally elongated in a pattern called "adenoidal face." This causes the teeth to come in at an improper angle as well as creating an overbite. Braces or other dental treatments may be necessary to correct these problems. Early treatment of the allergies causing the nasal congestion may prevent these problems. Allergy and ear infections
Allergies lead to inflammation in the ear and may cause fluid accumulation that can promote ear infections and decreased hearing. If this happens when the child is learning to talk, poor speech development may result. Clinically, allergies can cause earaches as well as ear itching, popping and fullness ("stopped up ears"). Anyone with these symptoms should be considered for testing and treatment.
