Allergies (Food)
Hello, I am wondering which foods, if any, contain antihistamine. I am allergic to ragweed pollen. Sniff!! Sniff!!
The foods we consume do not contain antihistamine. FYI, Antihistamines are prescriptions you can take to interrupt your body's production of histamines in response to allergens in the environment. However, diet can still play an important role in controlling allergic reactions. A healthy, balanced diet that follows the recommendations of the Food Guide Pyramid is the first key to defending your body against allergic reactions. A healthy body is more resistant to attack, whereas stress, poor diet, insufficient sleep, emotional trauma, and infection can predispose your body to allergic reactions. More specifically, vitamin C and vitamin E can help protect your body. Vitamin C will boost your immune system and is found in citrus foods such as oranges, grapefruit, orange juice, grapefruit juice, green peppers and many beverages. Vitamin C acts similar to an antihistamine. Vitamin E is found in plant oils and green, leafy vegetables. With allergies in mind, the best diet to follow is one with plenty of carbohydrates and fresh fruits and vegetables. Hopefully the next frost will bring you relief from your allergies!

Food Allergies:
When Food Becomes the Enemy
by Ray Formanek Jr. Imagine what it would be like if eating a peanut butter sandwich or some shrimp, or drinking a tall glass of milk left you vomiting, gasping for breath, and furiously scratching a fresh crop of hives. For some people with food allergies, that's reality. A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food triggered by the immune system. While many people often have gas, bloating or another unpleasant reaction to something they eat, this is not an allergic response. Such a reaction is thought to not involve the immune system and is called "food intolerance." Only about 1.5 percent of adults and up to 6 percent of children younger than 3 years in the United Statesabout 4 million peoplehave a true food allergy, according to researchers who have examined the prevalence of food allergies. It's critical for people who have food allergies to identify them and to avoid foods that cause allergic reactions. Some foods can cause severe illness and, in some cases, a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) that can constrict airways in the lungs, severely lower blood pressure, and cause suffocation by the swelling of the tongue or throat.

How Your Immune System Works
by Marshall Brain Table of Contents Introduction to How Your Immune System Works Seeing Your Immune System Basics of the Immune System Viral or Bacterial Infection Components of the Immune System Lymph System Thymus Antibodies Complement System White Blood Cells Leukocytes Different Roles T Cells Vaccinations AIDS How Antibiotics Work Immune System Mistakes Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Inside your body there is an amazing protection mechanism called the immune system . It is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses , toxins and parasites that would love to invade your body. To understand the power of the immune system, all that you have to do is look at what happens to anything once it dies. That sounds gross, but it does show you something very important about your immune system. When something dies, its immune system (along with everything else) shuts down. In a matter of hours, the body is invaded by all sorts of bacteria, microbes, parasites... None of these things are able to get in when your immune system is working, but the moment your immune system stops the door is wide open. Once you die it only takes a few weeks for these organisms to completely dismantle your body and carry it away, until all that's left is a skeleton. Obviously your immune system is doing something amazing to keep all of that dismantling from happening when you are alive.

http://www.wonderpuppy.net/canwehelp/allergy.htm
Allergies to Your Pet In some situations, allergies to your pet can be controlled. Be very careful with asthmatic children though, you might need to find your pet a new home rather than risk your child's health and life, depending of the severity of the allergy. For less serious allergies there are some possible solutions. First and foremost, is keeping your pet clean. You may be lucky enough to have the kind of dog that has a kinder coat for the allergic, such as a poodle. No matter what kind of pet, keeping him clean and groomed, and keeping your living quarters clean will help. It may be possible to live with an allergic pet by separating the pet from the allergic person, such as never allowing the pet into the allergic person's bedroom. Check into the vacuum cleaners with the special HEPA filters too, and use them often. There is also a special product you can use on your pets: From Noofies:
Allerpet-C for cats and Allerpet-D for dogs has helped many allergic friends keep their animals. It's available at pet stores (sometimes the smaller mom-n-pop places are better for this than national chains) and at some vet's offices. It's a liquid - you moisten a paper towel or washcloth with this liquid and wipe your pet down with it once a week. It neutralizes the allergens on the pet's skin and fur. It takes about 3 weeks for it to reach peak effectiveness. It's truly a miracle for some!
Ed. note: Their site says once a week and the bottle probably does too, but KLynn says: "I've seen several articles on this now that say the pet has to be washed/wiped down once a day for it to be effective. That is because the allergen on cats rebuilds to it's original level every 24 hours."

Patient/Public Education: Fast Facts: Allergies Allergy is defined as a "harmful, increased susceptibility to a specific substance," also known as hypersensitivity, while immunity is characterized as a "protective, enhanced resistance." Antigens and Antibodies
Antigens are substances that stimulate immune reactions, since the immune system reacts as a defense mechanism against foreign materials. It operates through the action of cells, called cell-mediated immunity, and through proteins in the blood known as antibodies, which is defined as humoral immunity. In cell-mediated immunity, white blood cells processed by the thymus are involved and attack the antigen directly. These T-lymphocytes, or T-cells, also produce chemical mediators that play a role in activating other parts of the immune system. The antibodies belong to the immunoglobulin family of proteins and are designated into five major types; Immunoglobulin A, D, G, M, and E. IgA antibodies are found in saliva and tears and serve to protect the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. The role of IgD is uncertain. IgG, often called the "blocking antibody," protects people from an allergy attack and is also responsible for protecting newborns during the first months of life. Both IgE and IgM activate the complement system, a group of blood enzymes.

© 2002 Whim Whams Illustration Studio Being a pet owner is never easy. While pets bring us joy and companionship on a daily basis, they also require training, veterinary care, time, love, attention, and even tolerance. Tolerance is especially necessary when a pet owner is allergic to his or her companion animal. Studies show that approximately 15% of the population is allergic to dogs or cats. An estimated one-third of Americans who are allergic to cats (about two million people) live with at least one cat in their household anyway. In a study of 341 adults who were allergic to cats or dogs and had been advised by their physicians to give up their pets, only one out of five did. What's more, 122 of them obtained another pet after a previous one had died. It's clear the benefits of pet companionship outweigh the drawbacks of pet allergies for many owners. Living comfortably with a companion animal despite being allergic to him requires a good understanding of the allergic condition and an adherence to a few rules. Want to learn more?
