He collected research papers demonstrating the extent of abnormal glucose fluctuations among alcoholics and sent three different reports on the subject to AA physicians. Wilson's interest was personal as well as professional. For many years, he suffered from depression and other hypoglycemic symptoms. He also consumed huge amounts of sugar and caffeine. Finally, by eliminating sugar and caffeine and making other dietary changes, he stabilized his blood sugar and achieved a sense of well-being. Study after study has demonstrated that the vast majority of alcoholics are hypoglycemic. In one conducted by J. Poulos, D. Stafford, and K. Carron, fifty outpatient alcoholics and fifty halfway-house alcoholics were compared with a control group of one hundred nurses and teenagers. Of the one hundred alcoholics, ninety-six proved to be hypoglycemic; only fourteen of the nonalcoholic controls were hypoglycemic. A three-year study by Robert Meiers, M.D., in Santa Cruz, California, found that more than 95 percent of alcoholics studied suffered from low blood sugar.

Although some people are able to recover from alcoholism without help, the majority of alcoholics need assistance. With treatment and support, many individuals are able to stop drinking and rebuild their lives.
What Is Alcohol Abuse?
Alcohol abuse differs from alcoholism in that it does not include an extremely strong craving for alcohol, loss of control over drinking, or physical dependence. Alcohol abuse is defined as a pattern of drinking that results in one or more of the following situations within a 12-month period:
Although alcohol abuse is basically different from alcoholism, many effects of alcohol abuse are also experienced by alcoholics.

IDEAS FOR ACCOMMODATING PERSONS WITH ALCOHOLISM
By Linda Carter Batiste, J.D. and Kendra M. Duckworth, MS Preface Alcohol is the most widely used psychoactive drug in the United States. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), more than seven percent of the population ages18 years and older (nearly 13.8 million Americans) have problems with drinking, including 8.1 million people who are alcoholic. Almost three times as many men (9.8 million) as women (3.9 million) are problem drinkers, and prevalence is highest for both sexes in the 18-to-29-years-old age group. In the workplace, 6.6% of Americans employed in full-time jobs report heavy drinking, defined as drinking five or more drinks per occasion on five or more days in the past 30 days; 4.9% of part-timers and 10.4% of unemployed workers also report heavy drinking. The highest percentage of heavy drinkers (12.2%) is found among unemployed adults ages 26-34.

Difficulties Confronting Genetic Models of Alcoholism
Although hopes are high for genetic models of alcoholism, recent discoveries have not provided uniform support for any genetic proposition. Results, in particular, of two major Danish prospective studies (Knop at al., 1984; Pollock et al., 1984) and Schuckit's (1984a) ongoing comparisons of matched pairs of subjects with and without alcoholic relativesalong with results from other independent investigations-have generally not been consistent. Differences in BALs and in rate of elimination of alcohol from the blood following drinking have now been determined by all Vaillant (1983) suggested a modified cross-generational selection process to explain the large difference in the appearance of alcohol dependence between his college and his core-city sample: the lower incidence of dependence in the college group could be due to the economic and social failures of fathers of alcoholics that made it less likely their children would enter college. However, in explaining his extremely strong finding of ethnic differences in alcoholism, Vaillant relied on standard interpretations of how different cultures view alcohol and socialize its use. What makes Vaillant's reference to genetic determinism for his social-class results more surprising is his overall recommendation that: "At the present time, a conservative view of the role of genetic factors in alcoholism seems appropriate" (p. 70)

http://www.isbra.com
Welcome ISBRA's mission is to promote excellence internationally in all aspects of biomedical research on alcoholism and alcohol related biomedical phenomena. Biomedical research on alcoholism has given rise to important advances in knowledge and treatment of alcoholism . Comparative and collaborative research at an international level has made, and will continue to make, important contributions to our understanding of alcoholism and improvements in therapies. These developments led to the birth of the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism in 1981, bringing together researchers and their expertise from a number of national societies which are now affiliated to ISBRA. Our message to ISBRA members is that this website represents a major initiative. Its purpose is to encourage and facilitate communication of ideas and new research among workers in the many convergent disciplines in our common field of biomedical research on alcoholism. From this perspective, it is your website. Therefore, its usefulness and success in fulfilling these ideals rests with you. We look forward to your participation.

Hello, I'm Kathleen Sciacca, and I would like to welcome you to the Dual Diagnosis Website. Dual Diagnosis refers to co-occurring Mental Illness, Drug Addiction and/or Alcoholism in various combinations. This site is designed to provide information and resources for service providers, consumers, and family members who are seeking assistance and/or education in this field. The ultimate goal is to improve our service delivery systems. Our present systems have evolved to address singular/discrete disorders. It is entirely possible to reshape our mental health and substance abuse systems, and communities of care across systems, to provide comprehensive services to all consumers. In doing so, these programs will be able to provide effective interventions for persons who have dual/multiple disorders.

Uni-dimentional Models 1. Psychodynamic Model: any number of intra-psychic conflicts might lead to fixation at or regression to the "oral dependent" stage of development; alcohol provides oral gratification. 2. Social Learning Model: drinking behaviors are learned as a part of socialization and then are reinforced. 3. Tension Reduction: anxiety/stress leads to alcoholism or addiction which is a "secondary" phenomenon. 4. Disease Model (Jellinek): mixed etiology has five identified "types" of alcoholics. Multi-dimensional Model Biopsychosocial Model: explanatory model implicates numerous biologic, psychologic, and social factors as being responsible for a "disease" of addiction.

Hello, My name is Sharon, and I am an alcoholic. When I first began this website it was December of 1997. I was newly sober, and working on it was a sort of therapy for me. The website has undergone a few changes since then, but one thing remains constant. In order to keep the most important gift ever given to me, my sobriety, I must help others still suffering. I hope something on this website helps another person suffering from the disease of alcoholism to realize that there is hope, and that Alcoholism is a progressive disease, not a weakness of character. I also hope to help to dispel the myth that all alcoholics are homeless bums on the street clinging desperately to a brown paper bag. That is just not so! I never clung desperately to a brown paper bag unless I was puking in it, and I am most definitely an alcoholic! Alcoholics can be bums on the street yes, but they are also Mothers, Fathers, Grandparents, Wives, Husbands, and Children. They are Senators, First Ladies, Butchers, Bakers, and Candlestick Makers. They are Musicians, Actors, Doctors, Lawyers, Bricklayers, Brokers, Secretaries, Farmers, your next door neighbors, co-workers, the list goes on and on ad infinitum. Over 100,000 people in the
