Substance abuse recovery programs: Which one is right for you?
May 19, 1999 Web posted at: 11:13 AM EDT (1513 GMT) In this story: Relying on a "higher power" Depending on yourself Cutting back instead of quitting For women only ... RELATEDS By Theresa A. Reed (WebMD) - Beating an addiction on your own is a tall order, and one which few people can achieve for any length of time. One of your best chances for a successful, long-term recovery is to seek help from a program designed to help you cope with the physical and psychological pressures of kicking a substance dependency. And there are a number of programs to choose from. Whichever program you settle on, keep in mind that what matters most is not the cost of the program (low-cost programs have been found just as effective as expensive ones) or how much publicity it has received, but how well it works for you. Relying on a "higher power" Perhaps the best-known recovery program is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), synonymous with the Twelve Steps of recovery and the longest existing self-help program in the United States and Canada. During its 60 years of existence, AA has become so well-respected that judges doling out punishments for crimes committed "under the influence" often mandate attendance. AA asks that its members attend meetings regularly and seek out sponsors people who have successfully stayed sober. AA is not a religious organization, but many AA members relinquish so-called control of their addiction over to a "Higher Power."

123. Death Run: A Story About Recovery From Alcoholism And Drug Addiction Through Alc
A true story about alcoholism, drug addiction, and recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous and spirituality. Set against the backdrop of culture of the last five decades.
http://www.deathrun.com
Required Reading for Anyone Interested in Alcoholism, Drug Abuse, Alcoholics Anonymous, Recovery and Spirituality Death Run is a brutally honest story of one man's descent into the hell of alcoholism and drug abuse, and then his rising like the Phoenix from the ashes of his own destruction through the power and support of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is a shocking portrayal of a violent lifestyle, including what it is really like behind our prison walls. The author, Joel Reesman, presents a "no-holds-barred" depiction of the destruction wrought through drug abuse and alcohol addiction. Death Run is also powerful in its telling of the willingness to change, and the resiliency of the human spirit. Joel's own story provides us with hope in humankind and insight into the goodness that is within each of us! Hugh McCauley, MSW

Straight Talk on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
April 2002 is Alcohol Awareness Month. According to the Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, more than half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism or problem drinking, and more than nine million children live with a parent dependent on alcohol and/or illicit drugs. Alcoholism affects a wide circle of people close to the alcoholic – relatives, friends, neighbors, employers, co-workers, classmates, teachers, doctors, community workers – and is closely linked to many of America's most difficult social problems, including crime, homelessness, teen pregnancy and domestic violence. Yet 82% of doctors admit that MDs avoid addressing alcoholism in their patients. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, sponsoring April as Alcohol Awareness Month for the 16th year, says it’s important that people see alcoholism not as an issue of morality or "will power," but as a public health issue. What’s the truth about alcohol, and how do you know if you’ve got a problem? Here are some straight answers from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

(Via E-mail) Alcoholics Anonymous History GOD AND ALCOHOLISM Our Growing Opportunity in the 21st Century By Dick B. For almost 12 years, A.A.'s leading scholar and historian has researched to find, document, specify, and make known the real early A.A. program developed between 1935 and 1938, primarily at A.A.'s birthplace in Akron. The work has resulted in Dick's eighteen published titles. This new volume takes a different and challenging turn. The proposition could be called "So what!" So early A.A. had a simple 7 point program that produced astonishing results among 40 medically incurable alcoholics. So those simple elementscalled in three words "love and service"have been replaced by a totally different fellowship with totally different language and a host of totally new "nonsense gods." So the recovery results have become dismal. So what! Dick answers with the ignored specifics of the 1930's program. He shows the tremendous impact the A.A. ideas from medicine, religion, and experience have had on the alcoholism and many other problems. Then he shows the real product of early A.A. reliance upon God and a focus on the complexity of alcoholism. With this followed by the need to remember exactly what our Creator Yahweh can do and why no "self-help" ideas should ever be allowed to limit Him, His power, or His Word.

133. Coree's **Lost Baggage**
The author shares their experience with alcoholism, codependence and letting go in their struggle to recover.

"I'll be in San Francisco tonight," he said. "United Airlines Flight #946. I'm sorry it'll be so late. I don't arrive until 12:34 A.M. Will you pick me up?"
She listened to his words, their cacophony a jumble of incomprehensible phrases that she didn't quite seem to understand ... couldn't understand ... given his callous, entirely unconcerned attitude over the last two years. After all, he'd all but disappeared, leaving her to pick up the financial and emotional pieces that their unhealthy coupling had wrought. "How can this be happening?", she thought. "Why could he POSSIBLY want to come out here now, after all this time?" Granted, he'd been threatening to fly out for over two years, but, his words had always been a whole lot louder than his actions. What would compel him to make good on THIS promise, as opposed to all the others? Nevertheless, she dutifully wrote down the flight details, her hand uncharacteristically shaky. After all, hope springs eternal, right?
"I'll be there," she whispered, not wanting him to appear in the middle of the night on her now-peaceful doorstep. As she listened to his voice, she was surprised at the surreal, almost detached feeling that had come over her. Instantly numb, she was frightened, not wanting to get wrapped up again in all of the negative emotions that she'd tried so very hard to recover from. Even given her fear, though, she was hoping beyond hope that this long-overdue meeting would be the salve they needed to soothe the wounds they'd inflicted upon one-another over the last years of their marriage.

How We Can Achieve Lasting Sobriety by Fully Grieving Our Losses “We should be passing this book out on street corners…”
Danny M., recovering alcoholic It (the book) screams hope…
Pam W., Al-Anon Perhaps no other book since the publication of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous offers more insight into how we recover from alcoholism and addiction than this book. We have known for some time that persons must accept their disease in order to recover; but never have we really understood just how one does that. Now, we know. In this book we learn we must follow the path of the dying. We must grieve fully the loss of our best friend, our drug of choice. Incomplete grieving leads to incomplete sobriety—bargaining with God, the universe or other people to get back what we have lost. When the bargain is over, we are likely to relapse. Using her own poignant personal story, the author leads us through this process and beyond as we learn to deal with losses in recovery. It is a must read for anyone affected by alcoholism and addiction. Reader Reviews “A gut-wrenching account of one woman’s heroic, but seemingly hopeless, battle with alcoholism and how she broke its death grip to achieve victory. If you think you are hopeless, this book is for you.”

The Disease Concept of alcoholism. alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, incurabledisease characterized by loss of control over alcohol and other sedatives.
http://www.nh-dwi.com/psycholo.htm
The Disease Concept of Alcoholism
T he American Medical Association defines alcoholism as an illness or disease. Dr. David Ohlm, an expert in the field of alcoholism, has defined alcoholism as follows: A lcoholism is a chronic, progressive, incurable disease characterized by loss of control over alcohol and other sedatives.
  • Chronic: Lasts a long time. Progressive: Alcoholism goes through a series of increasing symptoms and it does not go away. It gets worse even after long periods of sobriety, and can be reactivated by a single drink. Incurable: One can not return to normal drinking. One can return to a normal life, but only by stopping drinking. Disease: A condition in which bodily health is impaired and interferes with the ability of the person to function normally. Loss of control: Once the alcoholic takes that first drink after a period of being sober or abstinent, he/she can not predict with any reliability whether he/she is going to have a normal or abnormal drinking episode. Therefore, they do not control the alcohol, it controls them.
T his is the major factor in defining alcoholismcan one predict their behavior every time we drink?
