Helping Older Adults Overcome
Alcohol or Medication Dependence
Older adults and senior citizens age quickly when suffering from alcoholism or addiction or mood-altering prescription drugs. They lose their health, their mental clarity, and their ability to live independently years earlier than other people their age. Alcoholism begins the downward journey into illness, dependence, pain, and inactivity. Older adults who would otherwise enjoy grandchildren and family gatherings, becomes increasingly withdrawn, angry, and malcontent. The good news is, older adults are more successful in treatment than any other age group. They can and do reclaim their lives. The symptoms grandchild wants to grow up without the special relationship only a grandparent can provide.

Alcoholism
Taking a preventive, public health approach Richard D. Blondell, MD; Robert L. Frierson, MD; Steven B. Lippmann, MD VOL 100 / NO 1 / JULY 1996 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This is the first of four articles on psychiatric disorders Preview : Alcoholism has serious negative consequences not only for the affected individual, but also for society at large. By using a public health approach that integrates medical, psychological, and social therapies, primary care physicians can educate at-risk patients to prevent alcohol abuse from starting and intervene to halt progression of the disease in patients with early or late alcoholism. A lthough its exact prevalence has not been established, alcoholism affects about 5% to 10% of the general population, 10% to 20% of ambulatory patients, and 20% to 40% of patients in hospital settings (1,2). This common disorder has serious health consequences and is responsible annually for a large number of deaths from alcohol-related diseases, accidents, and homicides. It is also a factor in numerous social problems, including domestic violence. Because of the problem's enormity, alcohol abuse merits the attention of primary care physicians. The etiology of alcoholism is unknown, but strong evidence exists for a genetic origin (3). Given the inherited risk, a variety of psychological and environmental factors (eg, depression, broken home, alcohol misuse by other family members) appear to influence the expression of that risk in the individual (4). Once begun, alcoholism typically progresses over 10 to 20 years. Because the progression is gradual, however, it is difficult to determine the exact time when a person becomes an alcoholic.

If you feel you can't function without a drink, seek help. Alcoholic drinks have been prepared and drunk for thousands of years, and the problems that can accompany excess alcohol intake have undoubtedly been around just as long.
Friend or foe?
High levels of alcohol consumption can lead to physical illness and psychological and social distress. Alcohol has therefore always had an ambivalent position in society.
In moderation, it can be the oil that makes a social occasion go with a bit more flow or helps a shy person overcome their inhibitions.
Small, regular amounts of alcohol also seem to have a positive effect on the heart and circulation. But too much alcohol is often a recipe for disaster.

"Robert went to lots of meetings and tried real hard to work the program but on one critical point he didn't have enough humility. He did not have enough humility to accept that he was lovable."
"I believe that in a hundred years historians will look back and pinpoint this milestone as the single most important event in the twentieth century. This milestone was the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous in Akron, Ohio, in June of 1935."

Medications Can Aid
Recovery from Alcoholism
by Paula Kurtzweil The number 13 represents bad luck for some people, but for Floyd McCrory of Rockville, Md., it's a sign of continuing good fortune. This year, he celebrates 13 years of sobriety. "Best thing I ever did," he said about quitting drinking. "It turned my whole life around." McCrory, 63, realized he was an alcoholic in 1983. That was the year he got so sick from alcohol-induced pancreatitis, he swore he'd never drink again. He went into a 28-day treatment program and now attends as many as 12 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week, he said. In addition, he serves as volunteer director of the Rockville (Md.) Metro Group. As director, he helps other people overcome their addiction to alcohol. He's rarely short of work because, according to the most recent estimates from the federal government's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, in 1992, 6.3 percent of men and 2.6 percent of women were alcoholics. That translates to nearly 8 million alcoholics in the United States. As many as 1.5 million of them seek treatment each year. Many follow McCrory's example: They enroll in inpatient and outpatient alcoholism treatment programs and supplement that with regular attendance at AA and other self-help group meetings.

Alcohol. Connie’s Instant Deliverance From alcoholism. Sueanne lives in Australiaand I know her personally. She writes My father died of alcoholism, aged 56.

Astounding!
You are about to read some amazing things. And yet even more astounding is that they are just random examples of genuine events occurring around the world. To say that similar things have happened millions of times is probably no exaggeration.
The Power that did this is no mindless machine, however. There is no guarantee that your experience will be identical to any mentioned here. God is too exciting for that sort of dull predictability. But there is a guarantee that God will work powerfully in your life, if you let him. Alcohol Heroin/Opium Tobacco Multiple addictions ... God is not a show off
    Alcohol
Connie’s Instant Deliverance From Alcoholism Nothing but alcohol was effective in helping Connie Beswick cope with her panic attacks. So severe was her condition that when all else failed, doctors resorted to four sessions of shock treatments, later followed by a further eight sessions. Nothing worked. Connie endured two years of torment before discovering that alcohol prevented the attacks, allowing her to live a fairly normal life. Few of us could imagine the horrific experiences of repeated panic attacks that forced Connie into the only solution she could find.
    She writes:

I drank for ten years. By then, alcohol had a hold of me. I remember a two week period when I stayed drunk all of the time, and I didn’t want to live any more.
