1. The Problem WKS is a potentially lethal condition, due to thiamine deficiency. WKS can also have major long term consequences, with patients requiring permanent institutional care. It is commonest in heavy drinkers who have a poor diet. Such patients may be unpopular with staff if unkempt, drunk or abusive. The intoxicated patient who does not recover fully and spontaneously may be suffering from WKS. Only if such a patient is admitted will full assessment be possible and further treatment be practical. There is no simple blood test to determine patients at risk of WKS. 2. The Aim To prevent the development of, and to treat symptoms of, WKS by administration of parenteral B complex vitamins. 3. Substance Abuse alcoholism. But, do you know when problem drinking is the sameas alcoholism, and at what point does problem drinking become alcoholism?
http://www.nmha.org/infoctr/factsheets/02.cfm
Substance Abuse
Alcoholism A lmost everyone witnesses the out-of-control antics of a problem drinker. But, do you know when problem drinking is the same as alcoholism, and at what point does problem drinking become alcoholism? In general, problem drinking qualifies as alcoholism when the person:
  • drinks compulsively;
  • keeps drinking in spite of adverse consequences;
  • gets upset when alcohol is not readily available.
Not everyone who gets drunk is an alcoholic. Many people drink to experiment; to act sociable; or to gain attention. Alcoholics, however, do not plan to get drunk; their drinking is an uncontrollable urge. How Common is Alcoholism? In any randomly selected group of Americans, 10 to 15 of every 100 people either are alcoholics or will become alcoholics. Ten million Americans are alcoholics, and another 10 million are problem drinkers who may be on their way to becoming alcoholics. Alcoholism is not a gender-related disease, between one-third and one-half of all alcoholics are women. Many alcoholics are teenagers; some are even preteens. What Causes Alcoholism?

Stepping Stone is a residence for working women in their early stages of recovery from alcohol abuse. Founded in 1962, its primary purpose is to assist and support working women to help themselves in sobriety. It fosters an environment in which they learn to live successfully in community with others. Because the alcoholic woman often suffers from isolation, the importance of group support with its elements and friendship, is well understood by the staff. Residents are supported by the Foundation who pays for 50% of their board and room through fund raising events, interest from a small endowment and grants from World Savings Community Outreach and Affordable Housing Department and CHW St, Mary's Hospital. Though not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous, Stepping Stone's philosophy is based on the principles and twelve steps of AA.

87. DWI And Dui. Is The Answer To The Problem Of Drunk Driving A License To Drink?
A simple solution, but controversial idea, concerning drunk driving, alcoholism, alcoholic relapse, as well as many other alcohol related problems.

The Answer to the problem of Drunk Driving, etc.
The answer to the problem of drunk driving, etc. could be this:
A permit for the purchase and consumption of alcohol beverages.
This would not only be a major assault on the problem of drunk driving,
but would also have an effect on virtually all other crimes such as these;
Murder, rape, assault, burglary, robbery, suicide, vandalism, wife beating,
child beating, child molestation, the spread of aids, animal cruelty, etc.,
the list is endless.
If this proposition was made law, there could be a major reduction in all
these areas of concern, even though the emphasis concerning alcohol abuse seems to be drunk driving in particular. There could also be many other positive results; Families healed, better work performance, booze money spent on products that would help the economy (we’ve all heard of the guy who spends half his check in the bar every payday,) this could also spare many health problems, etc. This new law could go something like this;

Welcome to www.docbluminc.com offering important information regarding health benefits and introducing our novel patented products REWARD SYSTEM (RDSystem). The RDSystem consists of patented amino acids and natural herbals to optimize both nature and mind. The core technology utilized in these neutraceuticals is scientifically backed by over 30 years of research from many world class scientists. Dr. Kenneth Blum, lead scientist in the discovery of the first gene for alcoholism, cocaine, and addictive behaviors, conceptualized that individuals prone to addictive behaviors were victims of brain chemical imbalances due to multi-genetic variance. He coined the term REWARD DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (RDS) to explain common genetic predisposition to addiction including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, nicotine, sugar, pathological gambling, sex, and other behavior disorders (ADHD).

A new study casts sobering doubts on earlier claims that an alcoholism drug can truly treat the addiction. The study, appearing in the Dec. 13 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, says naltrexone fails to prevent drinking relapses as well as previously believed, and, in fact, is no better than sugar pills at keeping hardened alcoholics on the wagon. Dr. Robert Rosenheck, a Yale University psychiatrist and a study co-author, says he and his colleagues were "totally flabbergasted" by their findings. "Our study has to reduce the confidence that one can have in prescribing this medication," Rosenheck says. "But we don't have a definite answer yet." The government is now sponsoring a large trial comparing naltrexone, which also is used to treat heroin addiction, with another alcoholism drug, acamprosate. Both medications act on the brain's opioid receptors to make drinking less pleasurable.
