Problem drinking
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
December, 2002 Download this factsheet Research has shown that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol can have health benefits. For men over 40, and women after the menopause, having one or two small drinks a day can help prevent coronary heart disease. However, it is estimated that a quarter of men and one in six women in Britain drink enough to put their health at risk.
How much is too much?
Government guidelines state that men should drink no more than three to four units per day and women no more than two to three units per day. However, some medical experts believe these levels are too high, and recommend no more than three units a day for men and two a day for women. Either way, you should not "save up" the units over the week and use them to binge at the weekend.
Strength and units
The strength of an alcoholic drink is indicated by the percentage of alcohol by volume (ABV).

On the Rocks: Cynthia's Alcoholism Information A shark attacks its prey very slowly. It allows them to have a false sense of security; Circling and circling around them coming closer and closer until when they least expect it >>WHAM! Alcoholism is like a great white shark. Deceiving it's victims into thinking they aren't in danger. It waits very patiently to attack swimming at the bottom of the murky glass. Each year, over 10 thousand individuals under the age of 24 are killed in alcohol related accidents, making it one of the leading causes of death for this age group! Most experts agree that there are about 20 million alcoholics in the United States. The costs imposed by these addicted Americans both emotionally and financially are incalculable. Alcoholism is a chronic primarily hereditary disease, that progresses from early physiological susceptibility, into addiction and loss of control! Contrary to popular belief, Alcoholism is based on physiological addiction and NOT psychological dependence. The alcoholic's enzymes, hormones, genes and brain chemistry work together to create their abnormal and unfortunate reaction to alcohol.

SALLY K. RIGLER, M.D.,

W hen caring for older patients who have problems related to alcohol use, family physicians often encounter interrelated medical, behavioral, social and environmental factors. In such cases, physicians must maintain a high index of suspicion and a nonjudgmental attitude, and should be able to recognize patient defenses and effectively support the patient's family members. A flexible approach allows physicians to individualize treatment for advanced age, physical and cognitive impairment, limited financial resources and varying patient preferences. Fundamental shifts in the delivery of health care are changing the patterns of treatment for alcohol abuse. Patients with mild problem drinking who do not meet the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence may benefit from brief, targeted counseling by their family physician. Some older alcoholic patients may decline referral to treatment programs because of perceived negative stigma. Family physicians must manage medical complications, coordinate alcohol-related treatment and address the consequences of alcoholism for family members and the community.

A lcohol misuse is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality (100,000 deaths annually), social and legal problems, acts of violence, and accidents. Alcoholism is among the most common psychiatric disorders in the general population: the lifetime prevalence of alcohol dependence, the severe form of alcoholism, is 8 to 14 percent. The ratio of alcohol dependence to alcohol abuse is approximately two to one. The incidence of alcoholism is still more common in men, but it has been increasing in women, and the female to male ratio for alcohol dependence has narrowed to one to two. Serious drinking often starts in adolescence; approximately 40 percent of alcoholics develop their first symptoms between 15 and 19 years of age.

This is My Story Home Links Above is the Ship I served on from 1958 to 1960 I was born on August the 13th on a Friday, the proverbial second son of a second son. I started drinking when I was about seventeen. You might say I was an alcoholic, it was so bad that no one knew I was a drunk till the day I stopped drinking. I joined the Navy things got even worse; did you ever hear the old saying (like a drunken sailor)? That was me. I would drink while I drove from bar to bar; I was not really enjoying it. It came to a point that my friends and I would go from bar to bar to start a bar fight, I thank God that no one was killed or enjured seriously. At times on Sunday while others were seeking God I would be in a bar drinking tomato juice and beer for my breakfast. I had a vicious temper and was always looking for a fight. My mouth was like an open sewer with the language I spoke, you would call it fluent profanity. I thought I would live forever till one day my best friend died in a freak accident, then I knew that life was temporary and death was just a heart beat away: I asked myself if I died right now where would I spend eternity. I knew that there was a God out there somewhere and that He had something better for me. The Bible says

First time drunk, high? Likely, age 13
OTTAWA One in five Canadian adolescents ages 12 to 15 has been drunk at least once, and has tried marijuana, according to a study released yesterday by Statistics Canada.
The study, based on interviews with more than 4,000 youths in that age group, found those most likely to use drugs and alcohol travelled with peers who also did so, had parents who nagged or were inconsistent about rules, and were more likely to be doing poorly in school. Woman left a paraplegic after drunken accident
But ruling doesn't grant immunity in future cases Two homeowners are not partially liable for an accident that left an 18-year-old woman a paraplegic when a drunken guest drove away from their New Year's Eve house party, Ontario's highest court has ruled.
The obligations of homeowners are vastly different from bar owners when it comes to serving alcohol, the Ontario Court of Appeal said yesterday.
In a unanimous decision, three judges overturned a trial court finding that Julie Zimmerman and Dwight Courrier were 15 per cent responsible for the injuries suffered by Zöe Childs, whose spine was severed in the accident in Gloucester Township, near Ottawa, on Jan. 1, 1999.

“Wine Into Water” He Turned My Wine Into Water Hi, I’m Hal; I was an alcoholic, But I’m not one anymore! W elcome: I wrote this book, so I can share my testimony of how God performed miracles in my life; So others may understand and learn to know the same freedoms I have been graced with. You know, there are many, including Christians, who have quit addictive habits, only to find themselves living with fear. “True Freedom” from addiction can only be gained by learning what Gods Word says about these issues. He Turned My Wine Into Water may be used as a guide to find Bible Scriptures so as to learn how God wants to be understood.
