Psychiatric resident Dr. Jon Grant and associate professor Dr. Suck Won Kim, co-investigators in the study, are testing the drug Naltrexone on seven or eight participants in the study. Since late October, only one person has finished the study, but researchers said they are hopeful about the outcome. "The results look very promising," Grant said. Kleptomania, an impulse control disorder that creates an urge to steal, affects approximately 5 percent of shoplifters, said Gary Christenson, director of the mental health clinic at Boynton Health Service. "I expect there are more people out there with the problem than we see clinically," Christenson said.

Investigators at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio report in the lead article in today’s Journal of the American Medical Association (Volume 284, Number 8) that the medication ondansetron may be an effective therapy for patients with early-onset alcohol dependence (alcoholism). Ondansetron appears to work by acting on serotonin, one of the brain’s many neurotransmitters. The study was supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and led by Bankole A. Johnson, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Division of Alcohol and Drug Addiction, Department of Psychiatry, UTHSC. "Dr. Johnson’s findings are consistent with a lengthy literature on serotonin dysfunction among early-onset alcoholics," said NIAAA Director Enoch Gordis, M.D. "If confirmed in future studies, they may predict new treatments for a subgroup of patients who often are resistant to behavioral therapies alone." Today’s report is based on a study conducted between 1995 and 1999, in which 271 patients with diagnosed alcoholism were randomized to receive one of three different doses of either ondansetron or placebo for 11 weeks. Compared with those who received the placebo, all groups of ondansetron patients with early-onset alcoholism had fewer drinks per day and drinks per drinking day. Early-onset patients in the most successful ondansetron group (patients who received 4

Alcoholism December 2001 WHAT IS ALCOHOLISM? Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, and often fatal disease. It is a primary disorder and not a symptom of other diseases or emotional problems. The chemistry of alcohol allows it to affect nearly every type of cell in the body, including those in the central nervous system. After prolonged exposure to alcohol, the brain adapts to the changes alcohol makes and becomes dependent on it. The severity of this disease is influenced by factors such as genetics, psychology, culture, and response to physical pain.
Signs of alcoholism or alcohol dependence include the following:
  • The only indication of early alcoholism may be the unpleasant physical responses to withdrawal that occur during even brief periods of abstinence.
  • Alcoholics have little or no control over the quantity they drink or the duration or frequency of their drinking.
  • They are preoccupied with drinking, deny their own addiction, and continue to drink even though they are aware of the dangers.
  • Over time, some people become tolerant to the effects of drinking and require more alcohol to become intoxicated, creating the illusion that they can "hold their liquor."

Alcoholism In The Workplace:
A Handbook for Supervisors
Introduction Alcoholism in the Workplace Supervisor's Role Signs to Look for ... - The Disease of Alcoholism
INTRODUCTION
The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence defines alcoholism this way: "Alcoholism is a primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychological, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortion in thinking, most notably denial." Alcohol is the single most used and abused drug in America. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), nearly 14 million Americans (1 in every 13 adults) abuse alcohol or are alcoholics. Several million more adults engage in risky drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems. The costs to society in terms of lost productivity, health care costs, traffic accidents, and personal tragedies are staggering. Numerous studies and reports have been issued on the workplace costs of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, and they report costs that range from $33 billion to $68 billion per year. Alcohol is a major factor in injuries, both at home, at work, and on the road. Nearly half of all traffic fatalities involve alcohol. Please see the

Depression and Alcoholism , A Lethal Mix
Depression and alcohol dependence are two common disorders that frequently coexist. As a result, sorting out the various symptoms of each disorder and determining whether the symptoms of one are caused by the other often prove difficult. In turn, this uncertainty hampers decision making concerning treatment. In his review of current knowledge relating to this important issue, Dr Sawyer pointed out that progress is being made in understanding how these two disorders interact and that the data now available provide at least some basis for guiding treatment when alcoholism is the presenting disorder. Current research generally supports the notion that when a patient with mild to moderate depressive symptoms and no history of depression begins treatment of alcohol dependence, adoption of a posture of watchful waiting is a better approach than immediate antidepressant therapy. In many heavy drinkers, depressive symptoms relent within 1 to 3 weeks after abstinence has been established. This wait-and-see approach has the advantages of minimizing unneeded treatment of depression and giving the patient a clearer message that drinking is the major problem to be dealt with. It would be a mistake, however, to adopt this approach too rigidly, since many questions about its application remain unanswered.

If you want to stop drinking and start living...
(or if someone you love wants to stop...) Naltrexone can help end the cravings for alcohol.
Alcoholism treatment success rates improve dramatically with the use of modern anti-craving medications such as naltrexone (originally known by the brand name: ReVia®), and more recently, Zofran® (generic name: ondansetron) and Topamax® (generic name: topiramate). Considerable government and private research has proven this time and again. So why haven't more alcoholism treatment programs incorporated the use of safe and effective medications such as naltrexone? For the answer, let's look at a little history. From 1935 until recently, most people turned to Alcoholics Anonymous for help with quitting drinking, or to a treatment program based on The Minnesota Model of Recovery (so named because of where 12-Step based treatment got its start.) AA and the other 12-Step programs helped many people get started on the road to recovery, because it worked. For nearly 60 years, it was about the only thing that did work. But unfortunately, it didn't work for everyone. Just as unfortunately, the 12-Step recovery community has been slow to embrace the use of medications (including such things as anti-depressant medications) in the recovery process. Finally, all that has changed. In 1994, the FDA approved the medication naltrexone HCI to stop the alcohol cravings that are normally associated with the early days of abstinence from alcohol. At last there's a safe and effective tool, an
