Alcohol Abuse
Alcohol abuse produces more pain than pleasure. Most problem drinkers appreciate the damage their drinking causes to self and loved ones, yet they continue to drink. Some don't know any better, others have tried to change their drinking pattern and failed. Basic and applied research conducted over the past two decades have shed light on what works and for whom. These pages summarize the findings that will help the intelligent layperson complete their passage to independence from alcohol. Recommended starting points:
As a cure for worry, work is better than whiskey.

Expressing Yourself Isn't Always Ideal

For years, the advice of psychologists and mothers alike has been to express your emotions in order to achieve a balanced mental state. This might bring up some problems when your anxiety is going to make that presentation look shoddy, but hey, it's better to show emotions than be like Spock, right? Not quite, according to the American Psychological Society. Read more...

Dial up $14.95 or NetZero Internet Service $9.95 About Me I have found it to be beneficial to provide some history about myself so that people will relate to who I am. I am John G. Banks, and I was born in December of 1950 (which makes me 50 years of age). I was raised in Sacramento attending Ethel I. Baker elementary, Fern Bacon Junior High, and Luther Burbank High School. I graduated from there in 1968. I went to work for Lucky Stores in 1967 and remained there until I was drafted into the Army in 1970. I was discharged in 1972 and went back to work with Luckys. The military made a man out of me and by doing so, taught me to drink like a man. It is important to note that someone in recovery needing spiritual values did not find them through religion. It was very clear to me that religion and I did not mix very well. I became a Christian in 1994 even though Alcoholics Anonymous had given me some positive insight into a God of my understanding. I still struggled with a 21 year history of drug and alcohol abuse. I had come to the point in my life that reality and my way of life collided with one another. Here I was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, a recovering addict/alcoholic, codependent to the bone and not a clue where I was heading. Joining the church did provide the guidance that I needed and it was there that I found a loving God who would forgive me.

Naltrexone And Alcoholism Treatment
Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) Series 28
Executive Summary and Recommendations
Psychosocial treatments for alcoholism have been shown to increase abstinence rates and improve the quality of life for many alcoholics. Nonetheless, a significant proportion of alcoholics find it difficult to maintain initial treatment gains and eventually relapse to problematic drinking. Some of these individuals can now be helped with naltrexone, an opiate antagonist recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat alcohol abuse disorders. When used as an adjunct to psychosocial therapies for alcohol-dependent or alcohol-abusing patients, naltrexone can reduce
  • The percentage of days spent drinking The amount of alcohol consumed on a drinking occasion Relapse to excessive and destructive drinking
This TIP will help clinicians and treatment providers use naltrexone safely and effectively to enhance patient care and improve treatment outcomes.

Alcoholism A Widespread Problem Currently, nearly 14 million Americans—1 in every 13 adults-abuse alcohol or are alcoholic. Several million more adults engage in risky drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems. In addition, approximately 53 percent of men and women in the United States report that one or more of their close relatives have a drinking problem. What Is Alcoholism? Alcoholism is a disease that is characterized by the following: Craving: A strong need, or compulsion, to drink.
Loss of control: The frequent inability to stop drinking once a person has begun.
Physical dependence: The occurrence of withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. These symptoms are usually relieved by drinking alcohol or by taking another sedative drug.Alcoholism Tolerance: The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to get “high.”

Anyway, The Guy started popping up in all these songs almost accidentally, as if the tunes were already written, and my job was just to physically document them.

You are in: Substance Abuse Alcoholism Overview Alcohol problems vary in severity from mild to life threatening and affect the individual, the person's family, and society in numerous adverse ways. Despite all of the focus on drugs such as cocaine, alcohol remains the number one drug problem in the United States. According to community surveys, over 13% of adults in the United States will experience alcohol abuse or dependence (also referred to as alcoholism) at some point in their lives. Withdrawal, for those physically dependent on alcohol, is much more dangerous than withdrawal from heroin or other narcotic drugs.

Hi My name is Frank, I'm an alcoholic. Not surprisingly we are many. I would like to take this time to share with you the wonderful power of GOD.
Life as an alcoholic
I have been very blessed for the Lord has visited me.
Who am I, but a mere sinner unworthy to see.
He came into my heart to awaken me.
Through His love, His care, His trust, His authority.
He showed me the way, to hope and prosperity.
I will shout His grace for the world to see.
Because the Lord has visited me.

Let Go and Let God
"Nice to hear you are feeling a little better. Jesus loves you and he will fight the powers and forces in dark places for you. Just keep believing he can do it and he will in his time. Grow in patience and he will definitely reward you. Make sure you turn everything over to him, especially your sad thoughts, so he will make you feel his peace. Keep turning thoughts, situations over to Him each and every minute. It will be hard but I know you can do it. Take care and I will continue to pray for you. Love Doreen".
Went back to church regularly twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday, I found hope and peace. God is good! Went to my tenth AA meeting face to face, and my 80th online. 90 days of sobriety, Amen!

39. Alcoholism/Treatment
alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, relapsing brain disease. Five percentof Americans die of alcoholism. alcoholism runs in families.
http://www.alcoholismtreatment.org/
If you or someone you love has an alcohol problem, this is the first step in recovery.
How do you know you have an alcohol problem?
1. Have you ever tried to cut down on your drinking? 2. Have you ever felt annoyed when someone talked to you about your drinking? 3. Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking? 4.Have you ever used alcohol in the morning to settle yourself down? Two or more affirmative answers indicate probable alcoholism.
Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, relapsing brain disease. Five percent of Americans die of alcoholism.
Alcoholism is nothing to be shamed of because it is genetic. Forty percent of alcoholism is caused by genetic factors and sixty percent by factors we don't understand. If we take identical twins and split them at birth and raise one in Wyoming and one in Ethiopia, if one twin becomes an alcoholic, there is a 40% chance that the other twin will become an alcoholic. Alcoholism runs in families. If you have an alcohol problem it is very likely that other members of your family are addicted.
Alcoholism is lethal: Ninety five percent of untreated alcoholics die of alcoholism.
