Expressing Yourself Isn't Always Ideal

For years, the advice of psychologists and mothers alike has been to express your emotions in order to achieve a balanced mental state. This might bring up some problems when your anxiety is going to make that presentation look shoddy, but hey, it's better to show emotions than be like Spock, right? Not quite, according to the American Psychological Society. Read more...

    Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
    What is alcoholism?
Alcoholism is also known as "alcohol dependence." It is a disease that includes alcohol craving and continued drinking despite repeated alcohol-related problems, such as losing a job or getting into trouble with the law. Alcoholism includes four symptoms:
    • Craving A strong need, or compulsion, to drink.
    • Impaired control The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion.
    • Physical dependence Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking.
    • Tolerance The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel its effects.
Why is alcoholism now considered a disease?
Alcoholism is now accepted as a disease. It is a chronic and often progressive disease. Like many diseases, it has symptoms that include a strong need to drink despite negative consequences, such as serious job or health problems. Like many diseases, it has a generally predictable course and is influenced by both genetic (inherited) and environmental factors.

    top The Fact is...
    Tends to Run in Families
What’s important about Children of Alcoholics? Children of alcoholics (COAs):
    • are at high risk for alcohol and other drug problems
    • often live with pervasive tension and stress
    • have higher levels of anxiety and depression
    • do poorly in school
    • experience problems with coping
The good news is that they can be helped to bounce back from the effects of their families’ problems. When family members (parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles), guardians, or other adults in charge of children are alcoholics, there is strong evidence that children in these families are more likely to develop the disease of alcoholism as well. The fact is, alcoholism tends to run in families. What causes COAs to have increased risk? Children of alcoholics may or may not be raised by alcoholics. Either way, every COA is at risk for alcoholism or alcoholism-related problems.
    • Children living with alcoholics
Children who live with alcoholics are at increased risk because of genetic and/or environmental factors. They may be at more risk for alcoholism just as children of diabetics are at higher risk for diabetes. Children living with alcoholics often develop unhealthy living patterns. They may not learn how to trust themselves or others, how to handle uncomfortable feelings, or how to build positive relationships. COAs who lack these skills are also at higher risk for school failure, depression, increased anxiety, as well as trouble with alcohol and other drugs.

    Getting the Facts
For many people, the facts about alcoholism are not clear. What is alcoholism, exactly? How does it differ from alcohol abuse? When should a person seek help for a problem related to his or her drinking? The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has prepared this booklet to help individuals and families answer these and other common questions about alcohol problems. The following information explains both alcoholism and alcohol abuse, the symptoms of each, when and where to seek help, treatment choices, and additional helpful resources. A Widespread Problem What Is Alcoholism?

Actions and attitudes that American Baptist Churches are encouraged to take to help people with alcoholism and substance abuse problems.
    http://www.abc-usa.org/resources/resol/alcohol.htm
    AMERICAN BAPTIST RESOLUTION ON
    ALCOHOLISM AND OTHER CHEMICAL DEPENDENCIES
All are created in the image of God, and God has entrusted us to be stewards of the whole creation. As stewards of the Divine Image, we are called to be responsible in relationships of faith toward God and of love and justice toward humankind. As stewards of the natural world, we are called to manage the world for the well-being of the present and future human community. Stewardship includes responsible use of the gifts of body, mind and spirit, as well as the gifts of grapes, grain and chemicals.
The Bible asserts that our rebellion against God perverts our relationship to our neighbors and distorts our relationship to all creation. Dependency upon alcohol and other chemicals not only reflects a misuse of creation because of the harmful effects upon body, mind and spirit, but also thwarts the creative potential because of the harmful effects upon the human community.
The biblical vision of God's shalom (wholeness, health, well-being, harmony and peace) provides an image of what God intends for creation. In our brokenness, disharmony and ill-health we prevent shalom and participate in "the whole creation...groaning in travail until now" (Romans 8:22).
Dependency on alcohol and/or other chemicals is a primary, progressive and chronic disease which attacks body, mind and spirit. Drugs and alcohol are indeed potentially addicting. At least 10% of the adult population is dependent on alcohol or other drugs. One out of four families is suffering from the effects of alcoholism and other drug-related problems. This dependency is a leading cause of death in the United States and a major factor in accidental death and violent crimes.
