One-week intensive treatment program for panic with agoraphobia
People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. They can't predict when an attack will occur, and many develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. In between times there is a persistent, lingering worry that another attack could come any minute. When a panic attack strikes, most likely your heart pounds and you may feel sweaty, weak, faint, or dizzy. Your hands may tingle or feel numb, and you might feel flushed or chilled. You may have chest pain or smothering sensations, a sense of unreality, or fear of impending doom or loss of control. You may genuinely believe you're having a heart attack or stroke, losing your mind, or on the verge of death. Attacks can occur any time, even during nondream sleep. While most attacks average a couple of minutes, occasionally they can go on for up to 10 minutes. In rare cases, they may last an hour or more. Panic disorder strikes between 3 and 6 million Americans, and is twice as common in women as in men. It can appear at any agein children or in the elderlybut most often it begins in young adults. Not everyone who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder for example, many people have one attack but never have another. For those who do have panic disorder, though, it's important to seek treatment. Untreated, the disorder can become very disabling.

Definition
The word agoraphobia is derived from Greek words literally meaning "fear of the marketplace." The term is used to describe an irrational and often disabling fear of being out in public. Description
Agoraphobia is just one type of phobia, or irrational fear. People with phobias feel dread or panic when they face certain objects, situations, or activities. People with agoraphobia frequently also experience panic attacks, but panic attacks, or panic disorder , are not a requirement for a diagnosis of agoraphobia. The defining feature of agoraphobia is anxiety about being in places from which escape might be embarrasing or difficult, or in which help might be unavailable. The person suffering from agoraphobia usually avoids the anxiety-provoking situation and may become totally housebound.
Agoraphobia is the most common type of phobia, and it is estimated to affect between 5-12% of Americans within their lifetime. Agoraphobia is twice as common in women as in men and usually strikes between the ages of 15-35. The symptoms of the panic attacks which may accompany agoraphobia vary from person to person, and may include trembling, sweating, heart

Agoraphobia
If you walked out of your house or apartment this morning without a second thought, chances are you do not have agoraphobia. Agoraphobia literally means "fear of the marketplace." Now the term has come to refer to a special type of anxiety. People with agoraphobia are terrified about being in places from which escape might be difficult. Why are these people so concerned about escaping? Most people with agoraphobia have another disorder along with it, known as panic disorder. In brief, panic attacks can make people feel like they are dying, losing control, or going crazy. To avoid these attacks, people with agoraphobia generally begin to avoid being alone outside the home or to avoid being home alone. They may avoid crowds, cars, buses, or airplanes. They may avoid bridges or elevators. Many times people with agoraphobia avoid the situations that frighten them altogether. Sometimes they are able to force themselves into the situation, even though they remain very uncomfortable. Some people with agoraphobia will use alcohol or other drugs to try to control the anxiety. People usually develop agoraphobia sometime between their teen years and their mid-thirties. Agoraphobia seems to run in families to some extent. Women are more likely than men to develop this disorder, which affects millions of people in the United States. It is a very distressing condition that can affect a person's life to the extent that the person may become homebound.

Responsa A nswers to Pertinent Q uestions: Agoraphobia Q: I have been suffering from agoraphobia for the past number of years. Does Kabbalah offer any advice which can help me to overcome this condition? A: T he study of Torah, especially Chassidut, brings peace and serenity to the soul. Listening to authentic Chassidic melodies is a particularly effective way to soothe anxiety. J ust like Nachshon at the parting of the Red Sea, you have to take the plunge, and trust in G-d that He will be there for you. Commit yourself to take a short walk outside, and stick to your decision no matter what. All the while, talk to G-d. Tell him that you are putting yourself in His loving hands, and that you trust Him to do with you whatever is best. Each day, venture a bit farther from your home, until you feel comfortable going long distances. G-d loves you, and He is with you everywhere that you go, whether in your home or very far away. Information on Agoraphobia
    What is it?
Agoraphobia is a very complex phobia usually manifesting itself as a collection of inter-linked phobias. For example many agoraphobics also fear being left alone (monophobia), dislike being in any situation where they feel trapped (exhibiting claustrophobia type tendencies) and fear travelling away from their 'safe' place, usually the home. Some agoraphobics find they can travel more easily if they have a trusted friend or family member accompanying them, however this can quickly lead to dependency on their carer. The severity of agoraphobia varies enormously between sufferers from those who are housebound, even room-bound, to those who can travel specific distances within a defined boundary. Top ^
