Anxious! Panicky! Feeling out-of-control? Are you wondering what is wrong? Do you sometimes feel like you are going crazy? That is how I once felt. I found out I was experiencing Panic Disorder. I turned to prayer and the promises God has given us. Then things began to change. Here's the good news. I was able to conquer it, and you can too! I am now twenty. I have tried hypnotherapy counseling and psychologists and herbal tablets, but nothing seems to help me. Please, can you help a young, outgoing twenty-year-old who wants to start living! Dear Reader, Agoraphobia is a panic disorder, characterized by intense anxiety about being in places that would be difficult to escape, or where it might be embarrassing to experience symptoms of panic. For example, many people with agoraphobia fear leaving their homes alone, being in a crowd or standing in a line, being on a bridge, or traveling in various vehicles. Sometimes agoraphobia is experienced as a distinct condition, where one fears fainting, being trapped, having diarrhea in a public place, or otherwise feeling helpless and not receiving assistance. More commonly, agoraphobia occurs in people who also experience panic attacks. Panic attacks are intense feelings of fear and often doom, which usually build and peak within about ten minutes of onset. Some of the most typical symptoms include:
  • chest pain and/or heart palpitations
  • trembling
  • feeling faint or dizzy
  • shortness of breath or difficulty catching your breath
  • fear of dying
  • loss of control
  • excessive sweating
  • feeling nauseated
These attacks can be terrifying and physically overwhelming (people experiencing panic attacks often rush to the emergency room convinced that they are having a heart attack). Sometimes the attacks are prompted by a particular experience, and sometimes they are unprovoked. Once a person has had some panic attacks, they may begin to fear having one in public and thus develop an additional panic reaction to these situations, and therefore, agoraphobia.

Symptoms The following is a list of symptoms that a person having a phobic reaction may experience: Tension, nervousness, trembling, nausea, cold or clammy palms, a hot feeling all over the body, profuse sweating, wobbly legs, dry mouth, and shortness of breath.
If these symtoms are not relieved, it may lead to a sense of doom, dizziness, visual distortions, faintness, numbness or tingling of hands and feet, and a rapid pulse. At this point, it would be said that the person is having an anxiety or panic attack. The person is not able to think or function. He may even believe that he is having a heart attack.
Causes Agoraphobia is caused by a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. A number of experts in the field of anxiety and panic disorders believe that there is a biological cause related to a chemical imbalance in the person's brain or body. Other possible causes include: High-stress lifestyles, childhood trauma, use of stimulants and/or recreational drugs, and some medical conditions such as hype-thyroidism, hypoglycemia, mineral and vitamin deficiencies, allergic reactions and inner ear disturbances.

Agoraphobia Support
First of all, let's define what Agoraphobia is. Agoraphobia is NOT a seperate condition to other anxiety disorders, it is part of anxiety disorder. Without inappropriate anxiety, Agoraphobia CAN NOT develop. Agoraphobia prevents people from moving around as they wish by presenting that person with high anxiety or panic attacks when attempted. Agoraphobia is a FEATURE or symptom of anxiety disorder. I have been providing Agoraphobia support to my clients for over 7 years now and in not one case have the phobic symptoms not been eradicated as the general level of anxiety has been reduced. Commonly, during Agoraphobia support, the client has become more able to leave home and travel unattended very quickly by addressing the root cause of the disorder.
So what is the root cause of the disorder and what support is there for Agoraphobia?

This site is a self-help guide for people who have significant trouble with anxiety and phobias.
Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it becomes a disruptive force in their life. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to learn how to tame this anxiety and enjoy your life. You may already know that these kinds of problems are called "anxiety disorders." Most of the people I work with dislike this name, and I don't care much for it either. But it's so widely used that we're stuck with it, and so I'll use it here. The name's not important. What's important is learning how to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't disrupt your life. For those of you who may have suffered a long time, and are feeling pretty hopeless and pessimistic about it, let me just mention that these problems are:

Well, now that you've made your way to the Agoraphobia Web Page, I suppose you just might like to know what that funny-sounding name means. There are many technical definitions with all kinds of slants. For practical purposes, I'll just give you a brief definition given to me by a counselor I once worked with. According to her, agoraphobia is an anxiety condition wherein the one challenged with it suffers extreme anxiety, or even terror , when subjected to any situation which is outside of his or her "safety zone." The focus of this site is a practical one, one which explains in everyday terms what it's like to be phobic (shortened word for agoraphobic), written by a person who's been phobic for about 37 years now. To be sure, like most life situations, being phobic has its upsides and its downsides. I hope to give you a smattering of it all, as told by those of us who know the challenge first-hand. Luci, a good friend of mine and sister phobic, will also be contributing her input throughout this site. I hope you find it interesting, as well as informative.

And for those who are fortunate enough not to be afflicted with this disorder, I hope you will gain some understanding and become more emphathic and supportive to friends, co-workers, relatives or loved ones who suffer. What is Agoraphobia?
by Carol E. Watkins, MD
Agoraphobia is the fear of going out into public places. Agoraphbia can occur with or without panic attacks Individuals with severe agoraphobia should usually start both medication and therapy as soon as possible. Without the medication, such an individual might not be able to make full use of the therapeutic process. People with mild to moderate symptoms might chose a combination approach or therapy alone. Homework between situations, and coaching from family members or therapists help one gradually face the feared situations. *vignettes are fictional examples
