I have an extremely rare incurable disease called: Adiposis Dolorosa. It is also known as "Dercum's Disease". So far I have only found about 20 people that have this disease. There is NO cure. There is NO treatment. There is only supportive medications which are mainly pain pills. When this all first started, back on September 23, 1997, it started out as pain in my hands and arms. There was a lot of weakness and my hands and arms were going to sleep. In addition there was a huge lump inside the crook of my elbow on my left arm. It was about the size of a walnut. To just touch it sent me into tears as it was so painful. They thought it was Carpal Tunel, but ruled that out. Then they said it was Over-Use. I hadn't been typing much since September when it hit, and yet I was not getting any better. I had been begging my doctor, Doctor Fillingame, since September to do a biopsy on the first lump and he never would. Then I started asking him to refer me to a specialist and he wouldn't do that either. Since September I developed tumors on both my arms. The one huge lump at the crook of my elbow on my left arm turned into more lumps up the inside of my arm. In addition I developed another huge lump in the crook of the elbow in my right arm. At that point I started getting tumors, multiple tumors daily. They would grow very rapidly. What would start out the size of a pin head would become the size of a peach pit by the end of the day. Each visit I begged and pleaded with my doctor to please do a biopsy or send me to a specialist and he wouldn't

General Discussion
Dercum Disease is a rare disorder characterized by pressure of fatty deposits on nerves, resulting in weakness and pain. This disorder usually occurs in obese females between the ages of 45 and 60. Various areas of the body may swell for no apparent reason. The swelling may disappear without treatment, leaving hardened tissue or pendulous skin folds. In some cases, affected individuals may also experience depression, lethargy, and/or confusion. Dercum Disease is thought to be inherited as an autosomal dominant genetic trait.
Symptoms
Dercum Disease is characterized by pain and weakness caused by pressure on nerves by abnormal fatty deposits near joints. Swellings consisting of irregularly shaped soft fatty tissue deposits may occur in many areas of the body. The knees, trunk, forearms and thighs are most commonly affected. These deposits may spontaneously resolve, leaving hardened tissue or pendulous folds of skin. Some affected individuals may experience depression, lethargy, and/or confusion.

adiposis dolorosa of Dercum Dercum's disease is the formation of multiple fatty deposits in various sites. This is a rare disease that predominantly affects women over men in a ratio of 30:1. It is rare for this condition to affect women before the menopause. This condition may be familial but the majority of cases are sporadic. It is characterized by the formation of circumscribed painful adipose tissue deposits in the subcutaneous tissues of the extremities and other parts of the body. The most common site for the deposits is the knees. The size of lesions varies from 0.5 to 5 cm. Patients are often obese. The disease may be associated with emotional instability, fatigue, weakness and, very occasionally, dementia. Histological examination reveals no abnormalities of the adipose tissue. There is no fat necrosis as seen in panniculitis. Giant cell formations may be seen. There is no satisfactory treatment. It has been reported that intravenous lidocaine brought relief in two cases.

Corticosteroid-Induced Juxta-articular Adiposis Dolorosa By Steven S. Greenbaum, MD, John Varga, MD From the Departments of Dermatology (Dr Greenbaum) and Medicine (Dr Varga),

  • Long-term treatment with high doses of corticosteroids leads to the development of truncal obesity and focal fatty deposition. These deposits characteristically are located on the face, the nuchal and truncal areas, and episternally, as well as in the mediastinum and epicardium. We studied a patient with juxta-articular adiposis dolorosa who had L-tryptophan-associated eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome and was treated with high doses of prednisone. This is the first reported case of adiposis dolorosa occurring as a complication of corticosteroid treatment. Alterations of fat metabolism induced by corticosteroid excess may have played a role in the development of this unusual painful syndrome.
Adiposis dolorosa is an uncommon disorder of subcutaneous tissue that was first described by Dercum in 1892 at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. The understanding of this disease has not progressed very much in the past 98 years. It remains better understood as a clinical entity than as a physiologic or metabolic process.
