Burns Pet Nutrition - Factsheet
Addisons disease (Hypoadrenocorticism)
Addison's disease is caused by an insufficiency of adrenal hormones from the adrenal gland, the adrenal glands are paired glands located near the kidney. Some of the clinical signs: Lethargy and depression, Vomiting, Weakness, Poor appetite, Weight loss, Dehydration, Diarrhoea, Hypothermia, Shaking/trembling, Polyuria (increased urination), Polydipsia (increased drinking), Slow heart rate, Collapse and shock (may occur in later stages of condition). The adrenal gland produces three types of hormones: Mineralcorticoids e.g. aldosterone
Which have an effect on the levels of the minerals; sodium, chloride and potassium in the body. Without mineralcorticoids, the potassium levels in the body can become so high that they interfere with normal heart function causing shock and rapid death. Glucocorticoids e.g. cortisol

1. What are the symptoms of Addison's Disease in dogs? How is it diagnosed? How important is early detection? Addison's disease can present suddenly in young healthy pets, or in older pets that have been through major stress situations eg intensive care for road a traffic accident. Affected dogs are in severe shock with pale gums, slow heart rates, weak pulse, cool extremities and often have upset stomachs and weakness.
The clinician would start to get alarm bells ringing when considering the age, history and findings at examination. Bloods for electrolytes and biochemistries often show high potassium levels and elevation of the kidney enzymes. If the potassium is elevated, an EKG (ECG) would show a slow heart rate and depressed P waves (the part of the ECG showing the smaller heart chambers, atria, contracting)
Addison's disease is a life threatening condition that must be treated ASAP. Untreated dogs are usually dead within 24 hours from heart failure brought on by the increased potassium levels.

Clinical presentation is with fatigue, weakness, weight loss, anorexia, vomiting and abdominal pain. There may be hyperpigmentation of the mucosa of the mouth and rectum. Other characters Addison's disease, (Thomas Addison, 17931860, English physician), an endocrine disorder caused by destruction of the adrenal cortex and characterized by a deficiency in aldosterone and cortisol. For a general description, see Addisons disease The most common cause of Addison's disease is idiopathic atrophy of the adrenal glands, perhaps related to an autoimmune disorder. Additional causes are infections (such as tuberculosis or fungal diseases) or infiltrating neoplasms. The clinical manifestations are manifold (weight loss, weakness, hypovolaemia, hypotension, decreased cardiac output, prerenal azotaemia, acidosis, syncope, shock, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, psychosis, hypotension, hypoglycaemia, hyperpigmentation), but musculoskeletal manifestations are not frequent or prominent. Findings include migratory myalgias, back pain and sciatica. Additional abnormalities are the Guillain Barr syndrome, hyperkalaemic neuromyopathy, hyponatremic myopathy and flexion deformities. Radiographs in patients with Addison's disease may reveal calcification in the adrenal glands, external ear, periarticular areas and costal cartilages. Skeletal maturation may be delayed.
